If Sean is out for extended time, we have on depth chart Ta'Quan Roberson and Christian Veilleux. at this point why not use Tyler Warren as a QB?

Because he's been practicing as a TE.

Unless we are going to a full on Wildcat offense.

Wish we had done some wildcat today!

The best we looked with Roberson in at QB was when he was running the zone read, throwing the Bubble, and trying to get Lee going. Iowa quickly adjusted by bringing pressure and setting us up with terrible field position that we compounded by having multiple false starts.

The drops hurt, but Roberson was missing on his throws as well. After we kicked the FG, we probably didn't gain over 70 yards total.

We put everything on our defense and they held up good except for one breakdown in coverage. Might have been better forcing Iowa to drive the length of the field and kick FGs. They might would have, but forcing two drives instead of one is better when your offense is limited.

One breakdown in coverage and one terribly missed sideline tackle…..

Roberson was a 4* coming out of high school and projected to be a multi year starter. However, his negatives were size and passing accuracy, which was on full display in the game. He was described as a dual threat QB. In my experience, a dual threat QB means mainly a running QB with average to below average passing ability. Trace was a true dual threat with above average passing ability and that is why he was so successful at Penn State.

The bigger issues are:

-we've focused on pass blocking so much to get our OL good at it, it's been a negative to our run game.
-Yurcich had to rebuild SC
-TR truly isn't a fit in this offense

As you said, he should have been out there doing zone read and rpos. Still, at the end of day, when you implode with false starts and drops, an inaccurate QB vs the #2 defense isn't a good recipe.

Learning time.

my OP was really on this exact point. TR is the #2 largely by default. I doubt the "won" the #2 slot. CV is brand new and only played 1 yr US football, and lost 2020 to COVID. we essentially have an empty QB room. If you are ready to look at walk-ons, I am not sure that moving Warren to QB as a temp move might not work. Some schools recruited him as a QB 3* and he has a big arm with accuracy. runs decent, and has already been playing in games with things on the line. His skill set as a QB resembles MY style much more than TR. TR does not look to be functional in the MY offense. He has had plenty of time to develop and learn the OFF. IMHO, i would use the 2 weeks to reset, rather than invest in TR to magically be capable in MY offense. IF TR has to be used, and does not improve, where do you go?

All this is academic if SC can return, which is what we are hoping for. Problem is HOW do you use the next two weeks?

Not sure who does these ratings sometimes. Kevin Newsome and Paul Jones were 4 stars as well and they were both awful

Hate to break it to you but Trace = Roberson. Trace was a below average passer who had the advantage of throwing to Godwin, Hamilton and Gesicki while playing with Superman in the backfield. We saw the real Trace in 2018. You will of course come back with injury but it didn't impact his play but for one game.

Dumb. NFL teams aren't wasting a draft pick on a below average passer. Even a 6th round pick.

Everyone knew Tim Tebow couldn't play QB but some dumba$$ still drafted him in the first round. All it takes is one.

Your anti-McSorley posts are irrational and suggest some personal bias you have against him. Don't bother replying. I have no intention of engaging further with you.

Why not? Couldn't be much worse than what we witnessed Saturday.

What about Michael Johnson? Or Micah Bowens? Or Will Levis?

Oh, they all transferred and we didn't replace any of them at all? Oh, that sucks. K then.

actually Trace was pretty darn accurate in the short to mid-range. I believe he did pretty good in some of those NFL evaluations. What he lacked was the big arm that Hack had, which is why he had so many 50/50 balls. Sean is a bit better deep than Trace. Levis probably had the stronger arm than Sean for the deep ball, but Sean is more accurate short to mid-range.

TR appears to have serious accuracy issues at all levels, so in the absence of a run game, I am not sure how he can be used. Maybe there will be a dramatic improvement in the next two weeks. Every team, even Nova, has slowed our RB running game. With the upcoming schedule, we need someone who can pass the ball and run this offense.

Lets see what changes if any are made next week. Need more than two QB's on the depth chart if Clifford is out an extended period of time.
Luckily next week we are off, so 2 weeks to get ready for Illinois. Need to have a plan in place because OSU is in 3 weeks.

This is one of the things that led to the "dark years". Missed on a couple of QB's then Wasserman was supposed to be the guy and he left. Once that happens your start playing catch up. Maybe with full prep TR will be more ready to compete. He just looked overwhelmed to me.

Disappointed Sat that we kept TR in the pocket all night instead of rolling him out. Keeping him in the pocket just gave Iowa an “x marks the spot” to tee off on him.

Also

Disappointed that they didn’t put TR under center, that would have eliminated many/most of the procedure penalties.

Also

No misdirections, no toss plays in our running game.

Also

Lucky Iowa didn’t run every play as a QB sneak…..they’d have scored 49-56 pts!

The below average passer got drafted, and has cashed a few NFL paychecks. Better re-assess
