Remember when Penn States players came back instead of leaving early?

Franklin encourages them to graduate in three years and head to the NFL. He might be his own worst enemy. Part of me wonders if that is why his classes are consistently pretty strong but his on field product is average.

PSU is far above average. Top 3 in the B1G. How do most football players manage to graduate in 3 years given all of the time that D1 football takes?

I honestly don't think Franklin encourages everyone to leave...but right now, as far as these past 3 or 4 years are concerned, kids in our program are getting bad advice and this is straight up proven in fact.

Bosco you make a good point. I am sure it has something to do with their overall play. My question, how are these guys graduating in 3 years?
Enrolling early, summer classes, plus a regular class schedule the rest of the year could get you there. I'll let someone else do the math. I graduated in 1970 and have no idea what a normal class schedule looks like these days.

LJ Sr. always gave good advice.

I graduated in four years and never took an overloaded schedule and only took two summer courses the summer before my senior year. If I would have added just one more class each semester and took more summer courses, I could have graduated in three years easily. I just wasn’t in a hurry to get out.

Me neither. I used my redshirt year to get to Fall '70 to get in an extra football season in and to put off going to basic training. Nothing waiting for me after graduation except going into the Army Reserves.

Unless you know exactly what advice is being given to whom, you don't have the facts to prove anything.

Ellis Brooks left early, wasn't drafted, and didn't make the NFL. Facts.

Brooks actually left on time. He didn't use a covid year, which is an abnormality. I don't think he qualifies the same as a guy finishing his 3rd year testing the waters.

Whatever. If this program ever wants to turn the corner it has to start getting guys to return. Olu was a nice surprise but once again the bottom has fallen off and they are all leaving.

It's not whatever. Juice returning would be great, but then in '24 you will be griping that we don't have an experienced C returning or that we haven't tried to get one in the portal.

Olu is the exception, not the rule. The programs around the corner reload every year regardless of who goes pro.

Is that why Harrison of Ohio State came back TWICE?

The teams that are about championships, act like it.

I knew a few kids that took 5 years to graduate and they didn't have a D1 sport commitment.

So it is not about what is best for the players and your only concern is what is best for you which is a winning team? Forget success with honor, just win baby?

If a player is not going to the NFL should they quit the team the day they get their degree?

Remember when everyone thought the world was flat?
Penn State draft eligible/candidates are leaving because they can under the rules ....3 years after graduating from high school.
Back in the idyllic fanboy era, players were trapped in college, unable to transfer without sitting, no compensation without cheating/NCAA violation ....yes the good old days!
Some here insist that players declaring for the draft, "need another year." Perhaps they wish to move on. Anyone ever change jobs after 3 years?
Here's reality. Virtually every 3 star recruit and every 4 or 5* think they are destined to achieve fame and fortune in the NFL. Getting there is their ultimate goal. Playing at PSU or any other university is merely a step in the progression.....just like playing in high school. Thinking that we somehow can make these decisions for them...having never met them or knowing nothing about their families etc. is just as preposterous as those who insist they see things the coaches don't. It's a form of insanity.
