Basketball REPORT: ND in talks with Shrewsberry

So who is the closest league game? Louisville and Pitt. Not very close. And the rest are nearly double that distance.

Not a good league for them. Wonder how much this has affected recruiting? Would like to see someone to ask that of the out going coaches,
Was it different when they were in the Big East?
I don't think travel matters at all in this era.
I do think Notre Dame should give in and join the Big Ten for all sports but that's more about getting ahead of what college football is becoming.

i think they were generally better at basketball when they were in the BE. Brey went to the Elite 8 in year 1 or 2 of the ACC and then they seemed to decline

Maybe because the ACC at that time was better than the Big East? I know many won't agree with that statement but I think that was a bigger factor than anything else honestly.

ND, on paper, is a better job than Penn State unfortunately--just hoping Shrew is happy here and our offer to him is competitive.

but it's not better than Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan State, etc. So it depends on what he's really hoping to do. It's better than Penn State but not by as much as the top jobs.

I mean i could see Purdue being open in another year if their coach flames out again in the tourney

The ratings have to be massive for those must- see matchups against Duke, Wake, UVA, etc.
All schools have those matchups. Do you think Penn State-Indiana/Northwestern/Purdue/Minnesota/Rutgers are big games?

This has ND as the 4th highest after Ohio State, Alabama and Michigan--which seems about right. Actually that list makes a ton of sense.

I don't know--the Big Ten looks like complete garbage again this post season.
Maybe I'm overestimating Notre Dame but do you believe national perception has ND/Penn State basketball as close to being equal? I don't but could be wrong.

But, to be fair, yes Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and MAYBE Indiana are better jobs than ND but it might be easier to get those jobs from ND than Penn State.

No and i didn't say that they were equal. But it's not really one of the top jobs, even in its own state. Definitely no guarantee of succeeding there

But a better shot than here unfortunately
I hate Notre Dame more than any program in the country but I gotta be real here. If I was Shrew it would come down to who offered more and Penn State would need to offer significant changes to facilities for me to stay if it was even.

How many ACC schools are in the Sweet 16 this year? I have only one just like the Big 10. This wasn’t a great season for either conference.

Agreed. Teams like Duke flopped hard but it's been like this for a while with the Big Ten

If Micah does leave (certainly a realistic possibility at this point), it begs the question on how much he’s raised our level over the past two years, and if we’d be a potential destination for someone like Dusty May or Darian Devries.

but where is he trying to go? that's what is going to drive this more than money. Purdue could be open in another year or two. changing jobs every season isn't going to work. if his lifelong goal is Notre Dame then he may go.

He can absolutely go to ND now and Purdue in a year or two. Why don't you think that's an option?

There is another issue at play: in just two years he got us into the second round of the NCAAs. He looks like a great coach turning around a perennial also ran.

But now we are losing a ton of talent and next year doesn’t look too hot. If he stays and we struggle people may question his abilities. Got lucky… caught lightning in a bottle…. That sort of talk. Maybe wise for him to go while the opportunity presents itself.

The fact that PSU is in the Big 10 and close to several basketball hotbeds automatically should attract some big names. It’s about time that PSU lures away an already successful coach at a big time school like when the Vols got Barnes from Texas. Hiring another coach from a school like BU or even a Big 10 assistant just isn’t going to cut it anymore. Like Michael Keaton once said about the Pirates, it’s time to cut the check.

He didn't have a great team coming into this year, either. Until he filled it in with the portal.

ND is also a dumpster fire right now. So he's going to have to do the same thing there. It's going to come down to whether he really wants to be at ND.

I think you're oversimplifying this but who knows--maybe you're right. It just seems obvious that unless Penn State agree to improve a lot of things Notre Dame gets him if they want him.

With the portal, rebuilding years don’t need to happen in basketball. In basketball, you really only need a handful of really good players to have a competitive team, and the rest can be role players.

everyone is saying that Penn State has to improve all of these facilities and things. Which ones are so bad?

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to ND’s arena, but it’s not exactly a state of the art facility either.

The BJC is no worse than OSU playing in Value City Arena or Wisconsin playing in the Kohl Center. When that place opened, PSU had a really good team and that was a fun place to watch a game. I’ve seen Saturday night games there against IU and MSU when that was as good an atmosphere as most other places. The key is to put a quality product on the court.

We literally have people hoping we go back to Rec Hall which has less than 7k seats, right?

I think that has more to do with the current arena being in a location that everyone hates, relative to Rec which is on West campus and walkable from Allen St. The BJC is also sized too large. Our homecourt advantage at Rec was much, much greater for those who remember the last few years of Parkhill. Also think most people who say that want them to renovate Rec Hall first.

And then Shrew needs a guarantee they'd renovate it with an increase is seats
I'm not saying we can't keep him--we just have to make the financial investment in the program, not just him, to do so
This is all assuming the report has any validity.

I can't see how it's going to come down to that anyway. It's a long shot that we would move back to Rec. What are the facilities that everyone is saying need to be upgraded?

I'm so confused by these questions--are you trying to claim are facilities are good? You know better than that.

Which ones are so bad? That is the only question I am asking.
I literally don't understand what you mean...what do you mean which ones?
If you truly think out basketball facilities including the arena are great then believe that--I can't solve delusion.

I'm not the one to play this game with. You're not asking a question. And if you truly don't know then you shouldn't be stating otherwise. I'm so tired of people on this site that aren't idiots acting like it when they can't simply acknowledge another program might have an advantage over our program. STOP and be an adult. You know the answer to your "question", And if you don't you shouldn't be allowed to discuss basketball.

So you're going to act like an idiot--the Bryce Jordan Center is the greatest arena on Earth. Everyone loves it. It's start of the art and players are begging for the opportunity to go to Penn State and play there. Great facility. The act is tired.

so are there any facilities that need to be upgraded or not? Locker rooms, weight rooms? Nobody is being specific about what needs to be upgraded

It ALL needs upgrade--literally all of it. This has been a discussion for years if not decades and you're here WAY too much not to know this.
