Died today(two days after the Flyers made the playoffs) at the age of 83 after a two year battle with cancer. Has been the owner of the Flyers for 50 years. Love him or hate him, he was very influential in the game of hockey and the city of Philadelphia. Be interesting to see what the transition process will be.

My most vivid recollection of him was one year when the Flyers beat the Penguins in the final game of a playoff series, he and his current wife at the time was sitting in a box, that was fairly close to fans below; it was the end box of the lower row at the old Civic Arena. As the final whistle went off, current wife (#3? #4?) stood up and emptied her drink glass over the railing on the fans sitting below her. She was obviously a pig, but Ed didn't seem to mind her actions one bit.

Ed may have been a good guy, or not, but he had bad taste in women.

Ed Snider passes away this morning. He had spent the winter at his Clifornia home while battling bladder cancer. In the playoff clinching win on Saturday, Lauren Hart faced timed him while she sang God Bless America.

One of the best owners in sports.
By far and away the best in Philadelphia.
It would be pretty hard to find anyone who did more for sports in Philadelphia than Ed Snider.
He was to Philadelphia what the Rooneys were to Pittsburgh.

Ed was, is and always will be the man.

And clearly you just have bad taste.

RIP Ed.

Sorry. That's what I remember. I saw it, it was real.

I'm sorry he is dead. But this event happened. Make all the excuses you want.

I assume there was a precipitating event, but that doesn't excuse it. I never, ever saw something like that from anyone else, and that box was almost always filled by visiting team personnel during playoff time.

I'm sure Mr. Snyder was a good guy. But as mom said, you're judged by the company you keep. Hopefully he dumped her shortly thereafter.

Biggest question I have is this. Why did you choose to bring that up on the day the man died, if not to be a miserable bastard?

Some people just like to be negative.
I have seen stuff from executive boxes way worse than that.
At the end of this year a former co-worker of mine passed away. He was very instrumental in helping me advance in my career.
About 7 or 8 years ago he got let go due to a merger. It happens. But the new CEO delivered the news
to him in the most unprofesional manner.
Anyway I bought that up when he passed and a friend told me its time to celebrate his life. Not the way some CEO treated him.
My friend was right.

As far as that wife who Snider was with he was married 4 times. So if he did dump her, fine.
But Ed was always one to speak his mind. He was not just any owner but one of the most influential in sports.
Stuff others got fined for he could get away with.
There were stories that a player would say something to a ref and get fined. Snider would then pick it up, especially if he knew the player was right.

I have a great story about Ed Snider. A good friend of mine is a huge Philadelphia sports fan. He and some buddies went down to the Spectrum to see this young kid just out of high school, Darryl Dawkins, play against Spencer Haywood. Dawkins owned him that night. The guys stuck around after the game to see the basketball floor lifted for the ice rink to get ready for the Flyers that same night who were playing the Canadiens. Of course they were kicked out so they went down to that store in the old Spectrum where the players had to walk through to get to the locker rooms.
Now, Ed Snider never knew what city he was born in. The story was that he threw a dart at a map of PA, and it hit Mahanoy City.

So here comes Ed Snyder walking through the store and my friend yells, "Ed, can you do anything for some guys from Mahanoy City ?" No reaction.
Five minutes later a staffer comes out screaming, "Where are the people from Mahanoy City ?" The guys all volunteered. All the guys were escorted back to
meet Ed, and he gave them tickets for the game that night. My friend sent a thank you note to Ed, and he responded. Every year my friend would ask Ed for
tickets (he paid for them), and Ed would oblige. When my friend finally had a child of his own, he wanted to take him to a special game. He asked Ed, and of course,
he got four tickets to a Rangers game. But Ed left a note for my friend, he said "you can have these tickets for free on one condition, bring your son to meet me
before the game....."
