I was in Ann Arbor this weekend for the game. A friend of mine is a UM season ticket holder, so this was my sixth(?) PSU/UM game in AA. I have not watched the TV broadcast so the few thoughts below are based purely on being there:

(as an aside, I haven’t read through the game thread so some of this may have already been discussed. If so, lo siento).

1) I like Ann Arbor as a college town. It is much better than Columbus (not a college town) or East Lansing (not really a college town), but is significantly bigger (meaning more stuff to do) than State College or Bloomington or Chapel Hill. It is about the same size as Syracuse, but is much, much nicer and more university centric. Lots of good drinking and dining options. Somewhat oddly, lodging is still a nightmare (e.g. Motel 6 not walking distance from campus for $150 a night…sure, I guess so). My only other complaint is that the town is a little bit snooty but I guess that fits.

2) The weather was fantastic for a November game. Partly sunny with an intermittent breeze during the day. Temperatures dropped a little when the sun went down, but it was still very, very pleasant.

3) I saw a fair number of PSU fans around town, but it seemed like not as many as I saw in 2016. Maybe it was just my imagination or maybe I’m mis-remembering.

4) I almost typed that Michigan is an underrated beer state, but I’m not sure who rates those things, so I will say instead that Michigan is a great beer state. I think I drank 100% local except for one beer at a Mexican restaurant (because their only local option was an IPA and…bleh).

Some random stadium thoughts:

1) My buddy’s seats are in the non-PSU endzone (i.e. the endzone into which we scored out only TD). Decent seats, but it is really hard to see what is happening when the ball is in the red zone on the other side of the field, so I ended up watching the live feed on the scoreboard a lot.

2) There was a pre-game F16 flyover; while I think this is cool, when they don’t announce it (or don’t time it up properly) the go over so fast you basically miss it. They either need a fly a slower “mission” (maybe F16s aren’t the ideal aircraft for a flyover?) or make people aware to look for it.

3) The pre-game video that Michigan’s plays is new this year (or at least new since 2016) and for some reason it really rubbed me the wrong way. It’s fine to highlight famous alumni and athletes (and having James Earl Jones narrate it is very cool), but they literally refer to Michigan as the greatest university in the world. It’s a great school and all, but that’s laughable (it might not even be the greatest university in its conference) and sums of Michigan alumni arrogance/break with reality.

4) If you think Beaver stadium doesn’t show enough scores of other games…woo-boy. Michigan stadium rarely shows any scores and the only score they announce over the loudspeaker is Slippery Rock (which is a cool tradition and all, but I’d rather know who won OSU-UNL).

5) Security at the stadium is kind of joke. No metal detectors. No pat down. All you have to is remove your hat and unzip your coat. I could have smuggle in a 750 ml bottle of alcohol if I was so inclined.

6) Michigan fans around me were much worst behaved than I recall in the past. Lots of profanity directed towards PSU players, band and coaches (more on that below) and just more obnoxious behavior in general

7) I’ve seen this commented on in other places so I won’t dwell on it, but the stadium music selection was…interesting. I get that everyone know uses both Zombie Nation and Seven Nation Army (both of which have their CFB origins at PSU), so whatever. But they also played “Sweet Caroline”. Some Michigan fan claims that they “always play it”. They definitely didn’t play it in 2016, so if they “always play it” it’s new. I hate that song and wish PSU wouldn’t use it either. But seriously…what’s next playing “Hang on Sloopy”? They also play Mo Bamba several times (which again, maybe they’ve been doing all year), but I found it odd that they again were playing “our song.” The only time I saw the PSU players jumping around a little bit was when they played it prior to the second half kickoff.

8) The Blue Band made the trip, but I wasn’t super impressed with the joint “Game of Thrones” themed halftime show. I’m not really a marching band guy though (if it was up to me they’d just sit in the stands and play the fight song).

On to the game itself:

1) The “block six” that got called back was run into the other endzone so I didn’t have a view of the “not an illegal block”, but I’ve seen it on replay and…whew, boy. That sucks. I remarked at the time (not knowing that it was a bad call) that was the turning point in the game. Tied at 7 in the second quarter and PSU would have had a ton of momentum. I also have questions about how those multiple penalties were enforced, but I will save that for a separate post so it doesn’t get buried here.

2) Not surprisingly, there were a bunch of holding penalties that were not called on UM that were even obvious from the stands. I’m sure I’ll see even more when I watch the DVR. The worst one was a bad hold against Toney on Michigan’s long pass play that set up their second TD. That was a brutal sequence: block six called back, fumble, missed holding call on long pass play. Thanks refs! I could tell from the stands that the targeted penalty against Amari wouldn’t stand, but the UM fans lost their effing minds over that. I’m always surprised how many people at football games don’t know fairly basic rules of football.

3) I also thought that Hippenhammer (I think) got held badly on an incomplete pass (this was in the first quarter when it looked like Trace badly overthrew Mac near the PSU sideline).

4) I wonder if the knee injury is affecting Trace’s plant foot and therefore is accuracy. Lots of balls look high and behind their receivers. I think Tommy probably needs to start next week and give Trace a week off to heal up.

5) PSU didn’t look like they had any energy after the block six was called back. Just none. Nobody getting excited about good plays, no “juice” on the sidelines. Not sure how to explain that, but this (and most) team plays much better when they are loose and having fun.

6) The “knowledgeable” Michigan fans around me mocked Franklin for opting to take a re-kick on an out of bounds kickoff. Then my friend (UM grad) explained to them that KJ is not someone Michigan should want touching the ball and that was an aggressive, but correct, call by Franklin. There were also fans that mocked Franklin every time he took a time out. I’m assuming the one before the half was a conversation about whether to punt, go for it, or if they had a fake they liked. Given how little the offense had done at that point, I had no problem with considering all options there. After this same douchebag made his 20th comment of use of timeouts, I pointed out to him that in both halves Michigan used all three timeouts and PSU had timeouts left, so if anyone was calling stoopid (sic) timeouts it was Khaki Pants and that shut him up.

7) Speaking of Coach Jimmah, his decision to challenge Dotson’s sideline catch was poor sportsmanship. I could see from the other side of the field that it was a catch. Why do that? Because he’s an a-hole.

In summation of Saturday's game; "Sometimes you get the bear. Sometimes the bear gets you."

The TO before the half was just a mistake. Nothing else needs to be added.

Not sure how low you were, but you could see the flyover coming for almost the whole anthem. But I was looking for it, as I expected a flyover. I was high up in the same end zone you were in.

Another observation. It was early second quarter before student section filled up.

I saw a lot of holding not called as well. I wish our coaches would teach our OL to do the same. I think the staff can probably figure out through low level analytics which crews call it and which don't. Same thing with the DB's.

I don't think the Block-6 made a difference. Just like last year, when UM tied it up at 14 (or I guess it was 14-13), PSU dominated - same thing would have happened this year had PSU tied it up - UM would have dominated the rest of the game.

Thanks.

I was somewhat low down (row 50? We went down the steps when entering from the concourse), but maybe I wasn't expecting the flyover so just wasn't ready for it.

I disagree about the timeout call being a mistake. Talk it over; get it right. They did (probably).

The block 6 may not have been a difference maker in terms of final outcome (i.e. Michigan may still have won the game), but it certainly would have made it a much closer contest for much longer.

You're assuming if it was tied we still would have thrown the two pick sixs. Remember, Michigan's O scored 28 points. Trace being hurt and playing was decisive. He never should have played beyond the 1st quarter.

Technically it was only one pick six (and one return inside the 10), but I agree with your point.

With regards to the BB and UM marching band halftime show, it was a huge undertaking. BB learns a new halftime show every home game. The BB kids had to learn a whole new show for this trip too. Midterms are going on right now. Many of the kids are in challenging majors like engineering . I'd guess about 30% are also in Schreyer Honors College. BB practiced Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night , Thursday night off, took a bus to UM Friday at 9 AM. Had the first joint practice with UM band Friday night, and the Saturday performance. Host UM provided NO seating for the band. They stood the whole time. I'd like to salute a group of kids that really represent well what PSU is all about.

I didn't say it's not a lot of work. Only that it isn't enjoyable to me to watch.

Good post --- I'll just keep it to the "Stadium comments" section and make a few comments myself:

2. I tend to be amazed that they can even get the flyover so close to the end of the anthem. Those jets are moving and even a 1 second delay on the band (or singer's) part with the anthem means the jets being misplaced by a couple lengths of football field.

3. That was a little over the top, yes. Arguably WAY over the top. But hey, it's for U-M folk not us. I do know it's been a thing for a few years --- I know Darth Vader (from Manistee, Michigan!) was the voice for a similar (not exactly the same, but similar) intro for our 2016 visit to Ann Arbor. I distinctly recall that.

4. I thought they showed the scores at a good cadence --- they would be cycling in the lower-left of both scoreboards, and the cycling would continue during game play. I never felt, for instance, I was not up-to-date on Georgia/Kentucky, the other big 3:30 game. So agree to disagree here.

5. This is a HUGE potential problem. U-M needs to do better here. I mean, not to think of a horrible scenario, but this is also a scenario I worry that will happen some day: someone brings a gun in there and mows down dozens (especially given how packed in the crowd is - that place wouldn't clear easily at all in an emergency). Those snipers on the roofs of the press boxes wouldn't help with that.

6-7. Their fans had more of a chip on their shoulder this year, yes. And, for whatever reason, U-M players (and it's rubbed off on their fans) have embraced "trolling" as something they like to do. Fair enough - although I do appreciate original celebrations (e.g., what we're seeing in the NFL these days) more. It may also just be a sign of the times. After all, our President embraces "trolling" too. :)

I was cool with it (and love the narration) up until they proclaimed themselves the best university in the world. That's just arrogant (and false).

I thought the seating in Beaver Stadium was ridiculously tight. Michigan Stadium is even worse. My wife says the women’s bathroom situation was also horrible. I didn’t think bathroom situation could be worse than at Beaver Stadium.

Surprised to hear the comment about women’s bathrooms.
The bathroom situation for women is 10x better than it was a few years ago.
What section were you in?

I don't know how far the Motel 6 for $150 per night was from the stadium but unless it was really far that doesn't sound unduly expensive. Hotels jack up rates for high demand times and a football game with 100,000 in a town the size of Ann Arbor is pretty high demand.

And considering that everybody has phones that can tell them any score they want any time I'm surprised they show scores of other games at all.

In sum:

1. Ann Arbor is a great college town and city (true)
2. Craft beers are awesome in Michigan (true)
3. Pre-game videos at Michigan Stadium are unabashedly biased in favor of UMich (okay)
4. You prefer to be frisked and patted down more aggressively when entering a stadium (hmmmm)
5. Lots of calls went against PSU (of course they did; every PSU fan says this every game)
6. You knew Amari didn't target because you're knowledgeable and the UM fans are not (too bad all 3 refs threw flags, the 2 announcers in the booth thought it was targeting and the "expert" in New York said the call would "definitely" stand. Bottom line: nobody has a clue what targeting is except you...congrats)
7. PSU had no juice or energy (true. UM DL sucked the life out of them)
8. Harbaugh calling TO was poor sportsmanship (pot meet kettle. CJF had this coming and then some for the B.S. he pulled in 2017)

Good post

Good post

I came here to be snarky and a troll (on a message board where I am myself a guest).

Garbage post.

And, as to #4 specifically --- U-M football security is inadequate. The lack of metal detectors is a significant security risk. It would be very easy for people to smuggle pieces of a gun in there, assemble them inside the stadium, and then we would have a mass shooting situation.

Agreed... Especially his thoughts on Michigan craft beer. Why am I not surprised that a Michigan fan is living in the past. It's not the 90s anymore, and Founders/Bells/Arcadia don't quite cut it these days. Old Nation isn't doing anything you can't get in any other state. Transient puts out some decent barrel aged stuff, but their general release beers are weak. I don't know anyone who has ever liked Darkhorse or Jolly pumpkin. Kuhnhenn does some really interesting and unique brews, but one visit there is enough to last a lifetime. Michigan craft beer is all about what it used to be... which is incredibly ironic.

Arcadia Beer ----- it's not actually brewed in Arcadia, Michigan (a wonderful place, much better than Battle Creek). So at the least, it's mis-named.

That was really great.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on beer closer to home.

Even though long in the tooth, I still enjoy most Founders offerings. KBS, CBS, Breakfast stout, and Sumatra brown are still worthwhile especially since it is now easy to get KBS and CBS.

As everyone else in the conference knows "that's just Michigan".

Michigan's arrogance is actually a bit funny sometimes as they are very matter of fact about it.

CBS is a great beer, but there isn't much else that moves the needle from Founders. I also think Bell's Black Note is fantastic, but don't really like anything else they make. Hopslam is a hot mess.

Closer to home... you mean PA?

Yes, assuming you are from PA.

Pittsburgh has a few gems, voodoo's barrel room collection is second to none. Dancing gnome is crushing the New England IPAs. Brew Gentleman churns out some highly sought after styles. Not to mention countless smaller breweries making some great beer (Insurrection, Grist House, etc.)

Central PA is littered with breweries, some really good ones like Troeg's, Pizza Boy, Spring House. But nothing really outstanding, just a ton of average places.

Philly has a great beer scene, but not much for breweries in the city. Monk's cafe is one of the best beer bars in the world. In the surrounding area there are some great breweries... Tired Hands (very popular but not my thing), Hidden River, Forrest and Main.

That's my quick take, I could go on for hours, as I've been to nearly 200 breweries in PA. PA is by no means the best beer state, but it's definitely better than Michigan.

Thanks.

My favorite Central PA is Selinsgrove. Love the place and appreciate their fruit beers (Saison Peche, Kriek, and Raz). I was in the SKULL society for Springhouse but bailed this go round. Pizza Boy Sunny Side Up is a great Brew.

My fav places Philly local are Forest and Main, Imprint, and Hidden River. I like Stickman a bit too. I’m with you, a thumbs down for Tired Hands. Jean even had the balls to comment recently that the current environment of excess beers is boring. Nobody has latched on to that more than him.

Barrel Aged Sumatra is a treat, so far only available at Founders. Was actually hoping it would have been released this year instead of CBS again.
Add agree with panda the Black Note is an awesome beer. Bells just released BA Exposition stout and it is good as well, though I myself prefer Black Note (didn't stop me from driving over and picking up a case of the BA Expo though).

These lists are dumb anyway. But it is great to talk about beer on BWI again. Best topic next to cutting the cord and steak seasonings

You serious regarding Jolly Pumpkin? The ones I've had (Luciérnaga, La Roja, Oro De Calabaza, and Bam Bière) were all top notch in my book. Also, while I can now get equally phenomenal beers from any number of breweries fairly close to home, Founders and Bell's classics like KBS, CBS, Two Hearted and Hopslam are still all great even though they've been around for years.

There are so many breweries out there focusing on similar styles of beer that absolutely blow Jolly Pumpkin out of the water. Go to Jester King, De Garde, Fonta Flora, etc... and you will never want anything from Jolly pumpkin. Founders/Bells are not bad breweries, they just aren't great. I've got more KBS in the cellar than I will likely ever drink, but CBS is fantastic. It's the only founders beer I will actually seek out... and it took all of 10 minutes this year. Two Hearted is good beer, it's that beer that your local pizza place has on tap with all the macros... but I'd still rather have a good old DFH 60 minute IPA. Hopslam is a hot mess, I'd go as far as to say it's downright bad.

So you prefer to live in fear that something will happen. Here is a joke and its Beaver Stadium security that have people on their death bed, clueless rags from Wheelan Security that dont know how to dress for weather and allow you to pass because they are too cold to take their hands out of the pockets or some that are mentally challenged operating a metal detector. "Have a belt on? You are good!" I hope you arent nieve to think a weapon has not been snuck in the PSU?

In the recent Times World University rankings, Michigan ranked as #20. It was higher than any other B1G school. This seems subjective anyway, as there are a variety of reasons why someone would call a university "best."

All well and good, but then they should say "We are the 20th best university".

I think what irks me about UM is that their arrogance extends beyond the field. They think they are better than everyone at everything (spoiler alert: they are not). I enjoy telling UM folks that I was accepted into school their twice (for undergrad and grad school) and turned them down twice.

Go back to your job at Walmart, you fake Skunkbear.

Never been to Ann Arbor. But I remember driving through oh-high-ya years ago and listening to music on an oh-high-ya channel, when the DJ broke in and was talking about UM. He said to find it all you have to do is:

"go west until you smell it, and then go north until you step in it"

I don't live in fear.

But it certainly could happen --- and if it does, the school where it happens, it'll be a huge black mark on them and they'll get sued big-time.

Most folk don't know the story, but a horrible event could have happened at an Oklahoma home game back in 2005.

Lol could happen? No the question is when will it happen. Good for Michigan not having the illusion of security. It doesn't do shit anyway.

Oh and if people have their head in the sand about the Ok crazy student bomber that's their own fault. Then when they are interviewed by CNN they could "I could never imagine this" really sad people dont think are possible or likely. I'll be the guy saying "shit it was just a matter or time, what time is kickoff in two weeks"

I think it's hilarious you are so bothered by a University calling themselves 'the greatest University in the world' in a pregame 'pump up' video. I mean, seriously, who gives a crap?

Not bothered at all. Just made an observation. Surprised by your confusion.
