Sterling Jenkins backing up Bates at left tackle. I think the coaches have this mapped out about as well as possible.

Assuming this means McG is OK.....the tough choice is Dowrey vs Gonzo
My guess is they will both see a significant # of snaps

Finding a third OT to rotate in if Wright gets gassed could be interesting

And - good Lord - knock on wood for no more injuries

Knockin' that wood. You know what I mean.

I'm not ready to assume anything about McGovern based on the published depth chart. Franklin keeps info out of the public realm as much as possible, so he may or may not send some misleading info via the depth chart. Not even assuming anything based on the absence of Mahon on the chart.

I'm sure he will be asked - and semi-nimbly sidestep - those questions tomorrow at the press conference.

What I am assuming is that Fries keeps his redshirt for one more week, but I am not going to be the one to break that to Gunner. On second thought, why not?! (I say his redshirt comes off for the spring game, and you can quote me on that. ;) )

Rutgers depth chart? Looks more like a Rutgers WISH LIST, not a Rutgers depth chart.

I'm pretty sure that's a Penn State depth chart!

Obviously CJF says every Tuesday that the published Depth Chart is based upon the state of the team after Sunday's practice and that any injured player can get back into the game depth chart based on the week of practice. So we won't know if Palmer and/or Mahon and McGovern are really good to go until possibly the Wed. post-practice talk or the Thursday coaches show, at the earliest.

But, What I get from it:

  1. Fries will not play as long as there are 5 somewhat healthy players to play OL. Smart move by CJF. Give Fries a full year in the S&C program to hit the ground running in 2017, possibly earn a starting OT spot but definitely be in the rotation and get groomed to play when Mahon and Nelson (if he comes back from injury) are gone in 2018.
  2. Jenkins and Brosnan will be the players that rotate in at OT in the event of injuries to Bates and/or Wright. Assuming that Palmer and Mahon do not play. It would be great to get up 4 TD's at the half and then see Jenkins and Brosnan get some game experience......
  3. White has either made strides or Givens is in the dog house for some reason, as I believe this is the first DC with Givens behind White at DT.

So I guess McGovern is ok then?
and why is Sanders back down to 4th?

So I guess McGovern is ok then?
and why is Sanders back down to 4th?

I think Sanders has been 4th on the depth chart most, if not all, of the season so no real change there.

I didn't see McGovern's injury but heard it was more upper body so may have a better prognosis if nothing is torn.

Regarding Fries, I may be in minority but I'd preserve the redshirt at all costs. He may have most upside but not sure there's going to be a ton of difference in what the offense is capable of between him right now and the next best option that would preserve the shirt.

Givens has stood out most games. He had a few very noticeable big plays vs. IU - the fumble recovery, the batted pass late in the game, etc. I think he is a difference maker when he's in.

This is why I don't put a lot of credence into the entire depth chart, especially when non-season-ending injuries come into play. Why tip your hand and give the other team a planning advantage? The blitzes and D Line stunts may be different vs. Gonzo than vs. McGovern, for example.
And who knows what may happen during the week of practice, too?

I believe the depth charts published early in the week are a general guideline, not a definitive piece of info.

Re: White and Givens, in another thread, someone posted the total snaps from the IU game. Givens had 26 of 82 and White only 9 of 82. Now perhaps something happened between the end of that game and the release of the depth chart to explain why White is ahead of Givens but their placement on the depth chart does not seem to jive with the reality of playing time for each player.

Have you ever seen an OL position on a Penn State depth chart that is three deep with freshmen (LT)? Yikes.

Translation: We aren't going to burn Fries' redshirt unless it's an extreme emergency.

Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised to see Brosnan make the trip in addition to Fries.

I would think they would "have to" bring Brosnan

Not sure what the typical travel roster has been this year......but I would think you would generally want 5 guys capable of playing OT (in case the SHTF wrt injuries).

If that be the case:

Bates
Wright
Jenkins
Brosnan

and then.......?????

I have no idea what the situation is WRT Beh......but I would have to think that CJF is simply 100% not going to play him this year.
Do they bring Fries as well? If you do, you HAVE TO be willing to put him in there in the event of an apocalypse of injuries......but they may have determined that they simply are not going to do that - - - - in which case the 5th guy is likely the best of the available walk-ons.

Right. Givens has gotten much more PT, and that coincided with his being ahead of White on the depth chart. But that does not explain why the two were switched on this week's depth chart going into the Rutgers game.

There is a specific max number for the B10 travel squad, but it would not surprise me to see more OL players traveling than in past away games due to the injuries. Even though CJF is intent on not playing Fries, he may still take him to Rutgers just in case and if there are no other options for a 5th OT. Your OT list does not include Mahon or Palmer. I'd bet against Palmer playing this week from the looks of his brace/crutches on the sideline last week. But Mahon is still an unknown.

I have no idea re: Beh either other than whispers that I've seen hinted at which don't bear repeating.

Regardless of what the depth chart actually says, my hunch is that it actually looks like:

LT: Bates, Jenkins, Brosnan, Fries

RT: Wright, McGovern, Brosnan, Fries

lets see what would get a kid a one year ban, while everyone keeps their mouths shut?? Attitude? Academics? What else? I just call it CJF WitSec

I believe the limit (for B1G Travel Rosters) is still 70
