Schedule is out

If you do decide to do an elephant experience....
Elephant Nature Park - This place still provides an amazing experience with elephants, including being in the water with them, but you do not ride them.

Re. the Keystone Classic...looks like there were 18-22 wrestlers in each weight class last year, and it's run (scored and bracketed) like other double-elimination team tournaments (Scuffle, B1G's, NCAA's). Penn had more than 20 wrestlers, so it looks like it's open to all rostered wrestlers, we'll have to wait and see how many PSU takes.
One exception: Redshirts are not allowed to participate in the Keystone Classic.

Army is "no ticket event", which I guess means get there early. The arena holds between 5,000 and 6,000. It's 5000 and small change for basketball.

Army/Navy is on 2/19, which, depending on the NWCA schedule, could be a lot of fun.

Looks like I'll get to 8 events this year. Not quite as many as last year, but still pretty good.

Things I remember from Hong Kong:
- spent 2 nights there, by myself, as a layover on way home from 5wks in Oz/NZ
- was psyched for the food (via Bourdain), but didn't do any prep work and had no idea how to find the good spots. Also struggled inside restaurants that seemed awesome, b/c I had no idea how to order. Toward the end, I just went for Dim Sum joints so I could see the food they were wheeling around and just point. Also embarrassingly finally went Yankee at Bubba Gump's at the top of the Peak Tram
- all the pedestrians walking streets with surgical masks was pretty jarring
- my stopover was free, but after 2nights of hotel cost, I regretted not paying another $500 onto my big flight plan to stop in Singapore to visit & stay with a great Aussie friend instead. Still haven't been there.

Things I remember from Thailand:
- spent no time in Bangkok--only flight transfers
- value for money was excellent--food on the islands and goods & wares in Chiang Mai
- did 4+ day stints on two islands: koh samui & koh phi phi. I'll spare you the stories, but did get my first dive certification in phi phi--it was awesome!
- I loved Chiang Mai!

Things I did in Chiang Mai:
- rode an elephant. Have since read how poorly they're treated, so a little gutted, but the experience was amazing. They're truly Gentle Giants
- bought my first tailored suit. Rode in a tuk-tuk to the tailor three times to get the fitting perfect
- didn't have a girlfriend at the time, but bought jewelry for the (hopeful) future. Kept the necklace in a drawer for 3 years and scored mad points on Valentine's Day when I gave it to who would become my wife. If your wife is at all into shopping, do take her to the big jewelry stores. They're massive, fancy as hell and--get this--affordable.
- stayed in a 5 star hotel. Can't remember its name, but it was fancy as hell and maybe $40/night, in 2001.
- went drinking with my bell hop. (sorry, have to do this one story) His English was flawless and even though I wasn't shopping, he was an amazing & hilarious resource when hookers approached us at a few bars. We played a fun game of Guess the Ladyboy and if I had been shopping, I would have lost. Badly. It was shocking.
- drank Mekong Whiskey. Careful; it's got something weird in it, ala tequila worm
- took a bamboo rafting trip down a river. Went barefoot and regretted it. Bamboo was uncomfortable, but scenery was beautiful.
- did all my Christmas shopping at outdoor markets. Had to barter for every dang thing, which crushed my soul. Even though every item was probably less than ten bucks.
- value for money was extremely good. Oh, forgot I said that.
- heavily endorsed for a stopover!

Hope that helps!
Sure does help -- thanks!

The announcements re. the date/time of the Rutgers, Ohio State, and Iowa Duals should be out this week...plus one other minor change. All are driven by BTN.

No Southern Scuffle?

Well they have to go to one of the major Holiday Tournaments, don't they? (i.e., Midlands or Scuffle). BTW, I'm not literally saying they "have to", but as a practical matter, why wouldn't they go to one or the other? Wouldn't make any sense to skip both....

The coach's decision absolutely makes sense. The Big Ten schedule is what caused them to bag the Scuffle...for this year only. They will go back in a heartbeat, they love the Scuffle.

Doesn't make sense to whom?

Given the trip to Minneapolis and Lincoln the first weekend in January, and the Reno TOC date (weekend immediately after finals), this gives the guys 2 weeks off, including the entire holiday week.

Thanks, Roar, for the encouraging word about future Scuffles. I love the Scuffle too, and was worried that we were not going any more!

Of note, and this is something I asked John Smith about several years back when this was true about Oklahoma State (and I just thought to look at this now)...the first time Penn State will wrestle on back-to-back days are the two days of Big Ten's. Granted, it's a slightly different dynamic, as Big 12s were only one day back then (they had the Big 12 duals the day before the next year, which were taken seriously by half of the conference, and then they "permanently" went to two days last year when they added the Western Wrestling Conference schools), but I do wonder if that concerns the Nittany Lion coaching staff, and further, wonder if this will affect their team during the postseason this year, the way it did to Oklahoma State that year (although Gelogaev's injury had something to do with that as well, they weren't finishing any better than fifth even with Gelogaev's points, as it was a 36.5-point climb to fourth-placed Cornell).

The schedule appears to have been finalized per gopsusports, and as I do every year I created a separate calendar in Google Calendar. I made it public so you can add it if you use Google Calendar (or any other ICAL formatted calendar).

To add in Google Calendar, you'd look down the left side for "Other Calendars" ... then "Add By URL" ... and then paste:

PSU announced 2 updates today, not sure if they're captured yet:
Iowa = 9 pm ET start
BJC Dual = noon ET start

Yeah, got all the updates reflected in the announcement. And the Iowa start is actually 10 pm EST.
