Schedule is out

Hong Kong (+ ferry day trip to Macau), Siem Reap, and Bangkok. Flight is RT thru HK.

We haven't looked at a detailed itinerary yet -- if time allows, maybe a couple days in KL or Singapore (I have friends in both places), or Chiang Mai or somewhere else in that region that only needs a short stop.

It's an Intro to Asia trip for both of us. She's never been. I've been once before, to HK, but time was short and I didn't get to see much.

We don't plan to hit China, Vietnam, Laos, or Burma this time.

Any thoughts?
You'll really like Singapore if you get there.

Yes, because Arizona State, Kent State, CKLV, and Missouri are so weak...you can't be serious. (they're also wrestling at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, which figures to be EXTREMELY strong this year)
You're replying to possibly the least serious person on the board.

Reno is about 100X more exciting to a kid than Chattanooga or Chicago.
Pools and bikinis!

Sorry, dude. I ran some numbers in my computer and it says I'm a better poster than you. Guess that means you're wrong.

...the home schedule is the weakest in years but the Big 10 determines how the 14 Big 10 teams compete against each other...the four home bouts we got do not really compare to our away slate...
...of the remaining three home matches -Stanford and Binghamton are nice but not exciting - while Lehigh is the most attractive because it is a traditional, hard fought meet...
...oh, well, you can't have great home schedules every year...

I was just wondering if you were visiting Vietnam. It used to be a "hangout" of mine.

Future trip. I do want to go, but it didn't really work for this one.

By "hangout" in scare quotes, you mean you served in the Vietnam War? Or some other reference?

I served in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division from Sept 68 to Sept 69. By the way, Dungeon Yankee was my radio call sign for a special two week mission when I was in the artillery.

@ Madison, the Twin Cities and Iowa City. All 2 hour road trips for me (northeast Iowa). Could be a very fun January :)

Really disappointed at the loss of The Scuffle. It was a great chance for those of us in the south to see starters, backups, and red shirts.

I believe the prior Iowa/PSU dual was added after the schedule came out with tweets between CS and TB.
The Iowa Dual was added in 2013-14 about 1 week after the schedule was announced, and the Binghamton Open was removed from the schedule.

Roar is my gut wring that this is the earliest the schedule has been released in probably 4-5 years. May be wrong but august feels early.

Here's a review of the date in the past 10+ years when PSU's wrestling schedule was released:

2013 - Aug 29
2012 - Aug 27
2011 - June 1
2010 - June 22

What programs usually go to the Keystone Open?
Pitt, Penn, Drexel, ?

Decent chance PSU could have 4 or more champs at both Keystone & Reno ?

Thoughts ?

Sucks about the Scuffle. i was thinking about going down for a trip this year.

I believe last year's participants were:

Penn, Northwestern, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Drexel, Rider, Bloomsburg, Harvard, Franklin & Marshall, Eastern Michigan, Appalachian State, VMI, and Sacred Heart

Only time will tell how many of them will be participants at this year's Classic.

It is interesting that PSU appears to decided to not participate in the Scuffle. Fans had gotten kind of use to the Scuffle, and did seem to enjoy it.

Northwestern was scheduled to participate in the Keystone Classic (not Open) last year, however, their flight got cancelled and they were unable to make it into Philadelphia. I've covered the Keystone the past three years, however, will be unable to make it this year (I'll be in Columbia, Missouri for the Virginia Tech/Mizzou dual).

I do anticipate (although cannot yet confirm) being in Reno for the TOC, however, and am considering going to West Point for the Army dual. Also, I anticipate being at the Ohio State dual, and the Dual Championship Series final, presuming you guys are in the championship meet (or, depending on scheduling, another upper-tier meet).

Thanks Tom, beat me to it. The June/July announcements are probably a thing of the past. Between BJC Match negotiations and BTN coverage, August is the best we will get. I personally know how hard it is to put together a schedule, with each year having it's own set of challenges, and will never, ever complain about it.

Re. the Keystone Classic...looks like there were 18-22 wrestlers in each weight class last year, and it's run (scored and bracketed) like other double-elimination team tournaments (Scuffle, B1G's, NCAA's). Penn had more than 20 wrestlers, so it looks like it's open to all rostered wrestlers, we'll have to wait and see how many PSU takes.

Yep, here are the team participants from last years Keystone Tournament:

Last years NLO and future NLOs will not be great if teams cant plan on it in advance. So taking the team to the keystone classic helps Penn and Coach Slay more than it hurts us in my opinion. I think this is more about the staff spreading the love and pushing viewership (we are the rock starts and will bring the wrestling media at least) to programs that dont get it. The staff does this with the dual schedule too.

No scuffle sucks, but we can always go next year.

Not that I think anyone really is concerned about the goofer dual, but as JammenX will note another 1000x between now and then we owe them a dual beat down. So if we win Reno and pound the goofs and we have some RSs go to midlands....this guy will be grinning.

Reno is probably about (1) getting different opponents on the schedule [ . . . ] (2) visibility to Western recruits.

That's a good point.

Will this be the only opportunity for Penn State to wrestle the Valencias before nationals?

[aside: I've always wondered why Brands did not try or did not succeed in getting McDonough an opportunity to wrestle Robles before nationals. I wasn't reading wrestling boards back then, and so I don't know if this has already been talked about to death.]

Can the RS guys still go to the Scuffle? Not saying they will, but if they wont be wrestling in the duel meets right after the Scuffle, maybe a handful of them will go...?

RS guys can go to Reno I believe. I don't know how the scoring works there but I've seen references to redshirts wrestling there.

Yes, unless Zeke brings his team east for the Keystone Classic -- wouldn't rule that out since he was one head coach at Penn.

Regarding McDonough: our Hawk friends can weigh in about the Iowa specifics, but
(1) other than Robles and Bubba, that was a bad ASU team that wouldn't have challenged Iowa very much;
(2) Robles went from solid (4th seed/7th place) to superhuman in 1 year; I don't think anyone foresaw how much he improved in that one offseason -- especially on that team -- no other NCAA qualifiers until Bubba at 157.

Missouri and Poke shirts went to Reno last year, even though the varsity teams didn't.

Midlands is a better option for the shirts, who have to pay their own way. Can drive there and presumably roll out the sleeping bags in the Cortez basement (and maybe DT's in-laws would open up their basement too?).

That makes sense.

Now that we have hindsight, my lesson learned is this: if there is one wrestler who is very, very unique (due to style or body type or whatever), I would (if I were a coach) try hard to let my wrestler experience that unique wrestler, even if I have to send my wrestler alone (or with a B-team) to a tournament without the full team.

Things I remember from Hong Kong:
- spent 2 nights there, by myself, as a layover on way home from 5wks in Oz/NZ
- was psyched for the food (via Bourdain), but didn't do any prep work and had no idea how to find the good spots. Also struggled inside restaurants that seemed awesome, b/c I had no idea how to order. Toward the end, I just went for Dim Sum joints so I could see the food they were wheeling around and just point. Also embarrassingly finally went Yankee at Bubba Gump's at the top of the Peak Tram
- all the pedestrians walking streets with surgical masks was pretty jarring
- my stopover was free, but after 2nights of hotel cost, I regretted not paying another $500 onto my big flight plan to stop in Singapore to visit & stay with a great Aussie friend instead. Still haven't been there.

Things I remember from Thailand:
- spent no time in Bangkok--only flight transfers
- value for money was excellent--food on the islands and goods & wares in Chiang Mai
- did 4+ day stints on two islands: koh samui & koh phi phi. I'll spare you the stories, but did get my first dive certification in phi phi--it was awesome!
- I loved Chiang Mai!

Things I did in Chiang Mai:
- rode an elephant. Have since read how poorly they're treated, so a little gutted, but the experience was amazing. They're truly Gentle Giants
- bought my first tailored suit. Rode in a tuk-tuk to the tailor three times to get the fitting perfect
- didn't have a girlfriend at the time, but bought jewelry for the (hopeful) future. Kept the necklace in a drawer for 3 years and scored mad points on Valentine's Day when I gave it to who would become my wife. If your wife is at all into shopping, do take her to the big jewelry stores. They're massive, fancy as hell and--get this--affordable.
- stayed in a 5 star hotel. Can't remember its name, but it was fancy as hell and maybe $40/night, in 2001.
- went drinking with my bell hop. (sorry, have to do this one story) His English was flawless and even though I wasn't shopping, he was an amazing & hilarious resource when hookers approached us at a few bars. We played a fun game of Guess the Ladyboy and if I had been shopping, I would have lost. Badly. It was shocking.
- drank Mekong Whiskey. Careful; it's got something weird in it, ala tequila worm
- took a bamboo rafting trip down a river. Went barefoot and regretted it. Bamboo was uncomfortable, but scenery was beautiful.
- did all my Christmas shopping at outdoor markets. Had to barter for every dang thing, which crushed my soul. Even though every item was probably less than ten bucks.
- value for money was extremely good. Oh, forgot I said that.
- heavily endorsed for a stopover!

Hope that helps!
