Chris I’m as baffled and disappointed as the next guy… but to play devils advocate here, shouldn’t anyone with a PSU degree be happy to hear that an academic department was selective in which credits they’re accepting?
I would imagine that Wisconsin is a credible institution and if he was in good standing academically, it’s very confusing as to why the Penn State academic department would decline him.
We don't go to college to play school.....

Exactly, give me a break with the academic institution and "degree" value talk, we got a special teams specialist (AJ Lytton) in from Florida State after he took 2 random classes at a local community college in Maryland. Football players who meet the minimum standards will get in. Students who can contribute to the university in athletics aren't held to the same standards as the average joe and they shouldn't be since they bring other value to the university.
Also ... once again, Evan Wick was transferring from an academic equal institution (Wisconsin) and got into a school with tougher admission standards (Cal Poly) Would definitely understand if he was on academic probation or something and no other school would accept him and I think Cael would as well.
The situation is so weird that a lot of people thought Cal Poly was his first choice and had transfer issues and got them worked out last second but Wick's mom is not even shy about posting what really happened.

Not much to explain, whoever the professor is in charge of that department didn't feel Evan's classes at Wisconsin were compatible to what his classes were at Penn State. Maybe it was the prerequisites to the upper level classes, bottom line the professor didn't feel Evan should get a degree in his major for one year of study based on what he did for 4 years at Wisconsin.
Senior transfers are complicated, I get that but there obviously could have been a work around (someone mentioned noncredit independent study over the summer to prove he had the necessary knowledge, programs do that all the time if they feel an applicant is good but might be lacking quantitative knowledge potentially)

I'm not saying the professor should have accepted Evan no question. The professor should have pride in his department like Cael does for his wrestling team. Senior transfers are also uncommon. But clearly there could have been a compromise made of some kind to get Evan in and clearly the kid isn't an academic risk.
Yeah…they have pride until it comes to the football team, then they take a back seat and keep their mouths shut.

Exactly. This is why God invented the 496/497 Independent Studies classes. Use one (or two) of them to demonstrate applicability of education gained at Wisconsin.

We have talked about this in the past with regard to Stanford trying to eliminate wrestling. Some academics just don’t like collegiate sports. It isn‘t a stretch to think that some professor wasn’t interested in trying to make it work, or maybe even wanted to stick it to the wrestling program for trying to bring in Wick, who would be pursuing a degree using a non-traditional path.

I don’t know his major, but some programs have outcomes in courses aligned with certifications from outside organizations. These outcomes must be assessed. Wick was accepted to the University, but whatever his major was didn’t match up well. That happens. If he wanted to go an extra year or so, he could have done so. Transferring credits is not an easy thing. I am sure the department evaluated his courses, looked at the syllabi and outcomes and they just didn’t work. The University is an academic institution before an athletic one, and I would rather they err in the side of academic integrity over athletic achievements.

Evan Wick's major at Cal Poly is Interdisciplinary Studies. If you think Penn State has more "academic integrity" than Cal Poly, you are full of sh#$. Cal Poly made it work while the Penn State bureaucracy had their heads in their asses.

She also tweeted the night before that a school was having credit transfer issues. For the record, I have sources beyond that tweet also but it's not some well kept secret anymore. The fact some people still believe that Evan used PSU as a placeholder for Cal Poly to make it work in the 11th hour credit wise is hilarious.

Wick's listed major at Wisconsin was Rehabilitation Psychology (BE. A cursory search of PSU majors, the closest one looks to be a Rehabilitation and Human Services. I have neither the time nor interest in parsing course by course requirements between the two programs. It is not uncommon for the same major to have significant differences in emphasis from school to school. For example, I started out as an Architecture major, and one thing that I found was that the math requirement varied significantly from school to school. Back when I was shopping for schools, PSU Arch only required six credits of math, ANY math class. GATech, which at the time was ranked lower than PSU, required nine credits of math, six of which had to be calculus. Penn State required twelve credits of architectural history, GATech required six.
It’s not about transferring from one school to another. It’s about transferring from one academic/major program to another. You can have ten different schools, each offering degrees in economics, basketweaving, whatever, and could very well have ten different course requirements for that degree. Chances are that if a student spent four years at Penn State or CalPoly and wanted to transfer to Wisconsin, they too would have issues transferring all of their credits.
Wick's listed major at CalPoly is Interdisciplinary Studies in Liberal Arts. Interdisciplinary degrees by their very nature and definition are much more flexible in what courses count for the degree. Notice that Wick’s listed major at CalPoly is NOT Psychology. Perhaps he was not able to get into their Psychology program. Penn State does offer a a BS in Integrated Social Sciences and again, I have neither the time nor interest in parsing course by course requirements. I think that it is safe to assume that Penn State's degrees in Integrative Arts (my final degree), Interdisciplinary Business with Engineering Studies, and Interdisciplinary Science and Business were not an option for Wick.
