November 2011 Minnesota laid an ass kicking on the defending national champions. The entire team looked hapless from the bottom position, including defending national champion Q Wright. The Saturday practice after, everybody got to do whistle starts until they got out. Quentin got to practice them with Matt Brown, for about an hour after everybody else had left practice. By the end of that year PSU had 5 in the finals and bottom wrestling was not much of an issue.
As hard as it is to believe, this particular staff knows a lot about a lot. They have ideas of ways to get things fixed. Hell occasionally during the past 11 years here in Happy Valley the staff has accidentally tripped over solutions. I imagine after reading this thread they are aware mat wrestling is part of college folkstyle and they have probably already contacted others for help in solving the problem.
LOL, nice pull on the coaching reactions to that dual!
I remembered this dual from Jake Deitschler outpointing Dylan Alton (and then Deitschler retiring & Alton placing 3rd), so went to look up the recap on PSWC:
https://pennstatewrestlingclub.org/content/read_news.php?id=1223. Gophers won 7 bouts, including over W's over our guys ranked 18, 11, 1, 10 & 4
I think these recaps were done by Pat Donghia back then? I dunno, but to your point, check out some of these lines in the boutbybout sections:
125: #18 Nico vs #2 Sanders:
Megaludis trailed 2-1 after one period and chose down to start the second period but could not break free of a strong Sanders ride. Megaludis continued to battle, looking for a chance to escape and tie the bout up, but Sanders was able to ride the Lion out.
133: Derek Reber vs #7 David Thorn:
Thorn got the riding time point and posted the 14-5 major.
141: Sam Sherlock vs #10 Dardanes:
Sherlock looked to connect on a single but Dardanes countered for another takedown to lead 14-4 with :36 and a clinched riding time point.
149: #1 Molinaro vs #5 Ness (turnabout!):
After a reset with :26 left, Molinaro fought to ride Ness out and led 2-0 with 2:01 in riding time after one.
157: #11 Dylan Alton vs #9 Deitschler:
He then got in on a single leg and forced a scramble that Deitchler turned into a takedown and a 3-3 tie with 1:15 on the clock. Alton worked for an escape as the period ended, but Deitchler was able to ride him out.
165: #1 DT TF #8 Cody Yohn, in 4:29
174: #2 Ruth pinned Eric Ortiz in 2:28
184: #6 Steinhaus vs #1 Q:
The Lion quickly escaped but a scramble allowed Steinhaus to work his way to a takedown and a 2-1 lead. Wright worked for an escape, but Steinhaus continued a strong ride, building up a minute-plus in riding time in the process. Steinhaus maintained control of the Lion All-American for the rest of the period and led 2-1 with 1:50 in riding time after two periods.
197: #2 Sonny Yohn vs #10 Smackintosh, who did not get ridden, but also didn't ride:
McIntosh chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead.
McIntosh working his way around for a takedown and a 3-1 lead with just :20 left. Yohn scrambled to an escape and quickly got in on a shot that ended with a takedown as the bout ended. The mad scramble gave the second-ranked Gopher a 4-3 win and put Minnesota up 20-14.
285: #3 Nelson vs #4 Cam Wade:
After a scoreless first period, Nelson chose down to start the second stanza and Wade went to work looking for a chance to turn the Gopher. But Nelson countered Wade's effort and reversed the Lion senior for a 2-0 lead at the 1:20 mark. Nelson then put together a strong ride and killed the clock. Wade, trailing 2-0, chose neutral to start the final period.
