Shane Grifith?

Apologies for misreading the earlier post. Project Literacy Scholarship refund check is in the mail.

Stand by the point about Kerk though.

Pretty obviously where we can improve:

We got 4.5 points from 4 weights:
125 - 1.5
157 - 3 (before injury)
149 and 165 - 0

149 and 165 solutions seem straight forward (assuming no transfer). Can Joe get out of his own way? Is Van Ness good enough to come podium as a true freshman? 125 actually gets tougher with Vito and Glory coming back in the mix but what kind of jump can Howard make? He was there with Lamont this year. Will Brady be the same coming back from injury (will he come back at all next season, I think that's a legitimate concern with how bad the injury looked)

Iowa also outbonused us by 10 points:
Iowa - 27
Penn State - 17

This one I think bugs Cael more. Props to Iowa here for sure. Cael is definitely going to be pushing RBY, Carter, Brooks to evolve and push the pace more, they scored 2.5, 1 and 1 bonus points respectively. I am NOT taking away from how awesome it is that they finished on the top of the podium but I think Cael will want them taking that next step. Kerkvliet led us with 4.5 bonus so even Nick has room to improve there. I think Cael will be pushing for him to become what Zain was at his apex next year. (7-8 bonus points at NCAAs always)

Michael and Kerk surpassing their Iowa counterparts would be huge as well. Kerkvliet absolutely has the talent but has to improve on the mat. Michael needs much improved lungs (and hone his defensive skills)

Keep in mind, Iowa has areas to tack on points as well.
Pretty good breakdown. Another way of looking at it:

PSU had four champs, and still lost to Iowa by about 15 points (14.5?). All the Iowa guys (except Marinelli) wrestled about to seed, so there was nothing flukey about their results. And Iowa has some guys (Lee, DeSanto, Eierman, Cassiopi) who will score bonus, so Iowa's 27 bonus points weren't a fluke either. If Marinelli wrestles to form, figure at least 15 points from him next year. So that's 30+ points that PSU has to gain to catch up. This doesn't consider Assad (don't know the story with him), who could be a considerable improvement at 184, but does assume that Kemerer returns next season.

If Kemerer doesn't return, that tightens things up considerably. Kennedy may be a capable replacement but not likely to be at Kem's level just yet.

Still, PSU will likely need more than 114.5 points to overtake Iowa. Probably reasonable to expect more at 285 (assuming a healthy Kerk). Maybe a little better at 197, but Beard would need to improve his gas tank. Howard should improve (if he can even stay at 125) but, as noted, the weight class gets tougher next year with the Ivy leaguers (Glory and Vito) coming back. If Van Ness goes 149 and is as good as he appears to be, that might be 10-12 or so points there. With Berge now gone, 157 is a big question mark (Boone? Baraclough?) and IMO so is 165. Plus, it may not be realistic to assume all four PSU champs will repeat next year.

All in all, will not be easy to overtake Iowa next if Kemerer returns. A big name transfer at 157 or 165 would help a lot and might even be necessary. If Kemerer does not return, it's probably very close, at least on paper.

True but not necessarily relevant.

He's hardly the first freshman with that issue.

Also, he was out until the last week of the season. That's the absolute worst time to work on weaknesses -- it's the time to refine strengths.
I agree with everything you said, and I agree getting off the bottom is the biggest weakness for most Freshmen wrestlers, but my point was just that some guys are also just outstanding riders. Personally, I could never get out from bottom against Greg Haladay.

StandwithPride has problems getting off the bottom, too.

Never pick bottom!! Ragdollers creed.
@STAND with PRIDE was running a bottom position clinic in his back yard.

What did happen to Assad? I haven't heard anything about him.
No official word, but there were rumors of an injury. The only time we saw him this year was the freestyle match against Brands where he got lit up. He didn't look right at all and he didn't go to U23s a few weeks later, so I kind of buy the banged up thing. His ceiling is way higher than Brands' imo.

A one-off, for sure. Every year there are a couple of wrestlers that are like leeches when it comes to riding, regardless of the opponent. Eierman happens to be one, and will ride even seasoned veterans.
look back at come of Zains college matches, Zain rode out some elite guys--ask Stieber

November 2011 Minnesota laid an ass kicking on the defending national champions. The entire team looked hapless from the bottom position, including defending national champion Q Wright. The Saturday practice after, everybody got to do whistle starts until they got out. Quentin got to practice them with Matt Brown, for about an hour after everybody else had left practice. By the end of that year PSU had 5 in the finals and bottom wrestling was not much of an issue.

As hard as it is to believe, this particular staff knows a lot about a lot. They have ideas of ways to get things fixed. Hell occasionally during the past 11 years here in Happy Valley the staff has accidentally tripped over solutions. I imagine after reading this thread they are aware mat wrestling is part of college folkstyle and they have probably already contacted others for help in solving the problem.

How many points is that worth?
It’s worth a ncaa title and a spot on the Olympic team??? I was just giving an example of how athletic he is. If u watch his matches he moves his feet like a lightweight and one of the few hwt putting in cradles, bars, tilts working for falls..

Assad’s bark wasn’t as good as Brand’s bite.😉

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here but think this is noteworthy to share:

David Mirikitani did an interview on Rokfin with Shane Griffith. (Amazing kid btw, so humble and soft spoken) Very heavy Michigan vibes there. He basically sounded committed. He asked him his schools and he said Michigan and had to think again before saying Penn State and UNC. Then when asked about training partners, he actually cited Michigan's (having Alex Dieringer) instead of Penn State. Seems like the kid's mentally ready to go to Michigan. He said he wants to get his MBA, Michigan is easily the best program for that. Long story short, all this, combined with rumors of going 174 and nothing says the kid is coming here.

If you guys DO want to take a "you're telling me there's a chance" approach: He said he will visit all schools in the summer and sit down and talk to the coaches before making anything official. I suppose if you give Cael a chance to do that, anything is possible. He also said he will focus a bit on wrestling heavier this time around since going to Stanford was basically (obviously) a heavy academic decision.

Thanks for passing it along. Not too surprised. Just means if he goes MI that Pyles doesn't know sh*t.

Along with Brucki, if Michigan lands both Griffith and Dean, do you guys think they will be the favorite to win next year over PSU and even Iowa??

Yes -- Michigan is always favorite in the preseason when it doesn't count.

In reality: not happening. Michigan scored 69 pts last year. Even if Micic returns and wins the national title, they're still 10+ pts behind OKST for 3rd.

Dean adds no points -- he would need to shirt so Amine can drop to 184 -- or else one of Amine or Brucki sits.

If Griffith goes 174, he would replace Massa (5th). Probably add some points, but not enough to sniff Iowa or PSU.

Woods + Griffith + Micic probably surpasses OKST. But they're still short of 1st and 2nd.
