If truth were told I really don’t have a good modern argument against the portal except it’s inequality. If things don’t work out for a kid, if he’s unhappy for whatever reason let him transfer this isn’t bonded servitude. True he’s being given a free education and a place to refine and showcase his skills in hopes of a future big payday, but the school doesn’t own him. In “real life” people change jobs for a multiple reasons, and not always wisely. Today it’s pretty much only the military services that require a truly enforceable length of service or ( employment ) for job training.Hey Emmert, are you going to let ......student-athletes transfer 11 times a season soon and before the Bowl Games. It would make every game more interesting with teams adding players to fill voids due to injury. Oh, and bagman would never encourage transfers if a player has.............hurt feelings. Great lessons being learned. Oh, I am not even worried about credits transferring because Anime 101 is a core course at all P5 Universities.
Thus if a player transfers by entering the portal or just going down the street and another school actually provides a scholarship then the original school should be compensated. They should be given an extra scholarship to offer for every player who leaves and receives a scholarship. Not from the school he transfers to, but in general. In short instead of 85 if they lose 5 through the portal they now have 90 to give until eligibility expires and it reverts back to the norm whatever the hell that is. This is modern reality and nothing is going to stop transfers or poaching as the gutless NCAA has already proven. At least this way depth and the ability to compete is not completely ravaged.
Outside of a draconian enforcement that most reasonable people would find offensive there is no easy solution. I’m just trying to suggest a more palatable answer that in a small way helps to level the playing field.
