Shorter in the portal

Hey Emmert, are you going to let ......student-athletes transfer 11 times a season soon and before the Bowl Games. It would make every game more interesting with teams adding players to fill voids due to injury. Oh, and bagman would never encourage transfers if a player has.............hurt feelings. Great lessons being learned. Oh, I am not even worried about credits transferring because Anime 101 is a core course at all P5 Universities.
If truth were told I really don’t have a good modern argument against the portal except it’s inequality. If things don’t work out for a kid, if he’s unhappy for whatever reason let him transfer this isn’t bonded servitude. True he’s being given a free education and a place to refine and showcase his skills in hopes of a future big payday, but the school doesn’t own him. In “real life” people change jobs for a multiple reasons, and not always wisely. Today it’s pretty much only the military services that require a truly enforceable length of service or ( employment ) for job training.

Thus if a player transfers by entering the portal or just going down the street and another school actually provides a scholarship then the original school should be compensated. They should be given an extra scholarship to offer for every player who leaves and receives a scholarship. Not from the school he transfers to, but in general. In short instead of 85 if they lose 5 through the portal they now have 90 to give until eligibility expires and it reverts back to the norm whatever the hell that is. This is modern reality and nothing is going to stop transfers or poaching as the gutless NCAA has already proven. At least this way depth and the ability to compete is not completely ravaged.

Outside of a draconian enforcement that most reasonable people would find offensive there is no easy solution. I’m just trying to suggest a more palatable answer that in a small way helps to level the playing field.

Following that logic shouldn't the school that accepts the transfer and offers him a scholarship be docked one?

I recognize the numerical logic, but wouldn’t that be in effect punishing people and institutions for attempting to better their present condition. Every time a Stoudt kickoff sails into the end zone and prevents a possible huge return I don’t look at the PSU sideline and try to decide which player shouldn’t be there. My idea is based on compensation not punishment.

But when the player enters the portal that technically frees up a scholarship to the school that is losing the player which means they can sign another recruit. Many of them could be encouraged to enter the portal.

I believe that Franklin must be expecting many more to either enter the portal or leave for the NFL with 28 current recruits and we only have 14 or so SRs on scholarship.

It’s time to get over it people, Shorter is not a good football player he will never make it in the pros either. Why was he a 5 star recruit? That’s the biggest question. Has not showed anything on the field

You mean like Gesicki who struggled just as much, if not more, his first two years. I wouldn’t be so quick to write off a guy who is in his redshirt freshman year

Correct, and wether you or I or anyone thinks this is proper is immaterial. Look there are many conflicting arguments some good and some bad. We are definitely moving into a new age in college football and no matter what we do there sadly will be casualties both personal and institutional. The true sad reality is that there are no guidelines whatsoever as the NCAA is a corrupt feckless joke.

Biggest one is they may have to adjust recruiting caps. Take off any yearly caps and allow teams to sign as many as they can as long as they stay below the 85 limit.
Schools, coaches and players will adjust to the process. I believe you are seeking kids entering portal earlier due to the early signing period. This could open more schools up to them as many found out last year entering after the signing period there weren't as many spots open.

Actually you’re first paragraph makes good sense, that’s why it will never be adopted. The counter argument from the NCAA would be that smaller cash strapped schools can’t financially afford to to award so many in one year ( despite staying under 85 in total ). You see they always worry about the little guy.

What additional cost? If they typically have 85 players on scholarship it doesn't matter if they award 10 or 30 in a year the 85 number would be constant.

Well there is an additional cost associated with recruiting so many one year, but it’s minimal. I agree with your idea, however I doubt that the NCAA would as they have never been proactive in leveling the playing field.

Yeah...because winning 10 games 3 out of 4 years happens with bad coaching. Of course it does....I mean I'm great too after a play doesn't work saying that sucked and we could have done something else. It's not hard to do and playing QB in the stands....I have never once missed an open WR. I hate that PSU is in the mix every year now, so when we lose a game or two....let's blow up the staff every time that occurs. Against Minn our DB's and defense got roasted.....so it was an all around loss....but that would mean we have to be realistic in what actually occurred. I don't hear the calls for PRY though...but did his defense really get stronger as the year went on....no...you know why....THE F__KING SCHEDULE got much harder. That is what happens to most teams. tOSU finally played a decent team and didnt' win by 30.....maybe they should fire Wilson.
And let’s not forget that Michigan got better as their schedule got weaker....but let’s give all the credit to the coaching staff “coaching them up”.

Sheesh. I didn’t say fire. But.....when you ride Cain from inside the ten to the fifty, insert Slade, throw three passes and punt, and then see the pattern repeat itself, you are allowed to question even in the face of lots of wins.

I like this team, and they are young....and we will he even better next year because of it. But.....we had a grasp this year and that’s frustrating. Just because expectations were lower at the beginnng of the season doesn’t mean we can’t have critical points because those expectations were exceeded.

Shorter removed from the official roster - can't imagine a return is even under consideration.
Will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the semester. Shorter will stay on scholarship until the end of the semester but Franklin doesn't have to renew it for the Winter/Spring term. So Shorter doesn't have much time to find a new school and get enrolled for the Spring Term.

It is a somewhat reasonable expectation to believe this team will be better next season, but I believe only because of the fact that we will have a talented QB with a year's experience and hopefully settled on 2 RB's that will also be better due to the experience they got this season. As far as the rest of the team goes the only position I see that it is reasonable to fully expect improvement is at WR, and that likely won't happen if Hamler leaves which I don't believe will likely happen. The TE position will take a big step backwards if Freiermuth leaves, as well as Bowers. The OL will lose Gonzo and possibly Menet as well, with a limited stash of oline talent behind them, with Miranda the only one having experience and the likely Center if Menet leaves.

All across the Defense there will be losses of experienced talent with unknowns that will fill the voids and the depth will be very young as well. Reid, Taylor and possible Castro-Fields at DB, JJ and Brown at LB, and YGM (likely) and Windsor on the DL. And that does not account for additional portal losses.

The top 20 teams will be younger than they have been in the past on average due to the abundant early NFL entrants and the portal, so having coaches that can inject new and young talent successfully into the starting units and as key backups is much more critical than ever before. And recruiting a fair number of talented players that can play as true freshman is a necessity in order to stay in the top 10.

It's just a different ball game than it was in the JoePa years.......

Franklin must be expecting a large number to either turn pro or enter the portal. Of the 16 Seniors being honored on Sr. day I think only 11 are on scholarship. With 28 recruits (to date) there must be many more either leaving early, giving up their 5th year or entering the portal.

Hoping CJF and other coached and players address Shorter's concerns. He made several plays against the OSU. Convince him to stay and finish his education. He is going to make big plays in big games.

When a player transfers, you get his scholarship to give to someone else. I don;t follow that part of your post.

Why? When a player puts one foot out the door (during the season) he needs to go. What evidence do we have that he will make "big plays in big games?" The answer is we have none.....so anyone who takes his scholarship could make "big play in big games..."

Easy as sh!t to talk about though. I mean defenses don't mask coverages or move people late. You just toss it around and just worry about keeping everyone happy. I mean that is what it's all about. Brees throws to Michael Thomas twice as much as any WR on the squad......he must suck. He'll throw it to him while he is double teamed. I mean QB's don't go to their top targets and playmakers because after all....we need to keep everyone happy. There are tons of QB's out there that never miss an open guy or force the ball in fantasy land. The game is so GD easy from the stands and couch.

Are there racists in Fantasyland too? I'll assume you will know since it's in your own goddamn head

The left pic, I thought that was a dropping football, but it turns out it was simply his right knee.

Second pic, he’s describing his ego.

Third pic, he’s holding something, he’s not sure what it is.

SOMEDAY, he’ll realize that walking out on his teammates in-season was a cowardly disgrace. I hope he grows up and learns from his mistake.

5 star in-season quitter. Now that he's headed to Gainesville, shouldn't we call him Jorter?

Shorter doing the whole uniform thing is like someone throwing a bridal shower for a second marriage.
Him even taking those photos says a lot of his level of maturity.
In not intrested in defending shorter, but juwon did these pics too, I think it's just a sign of the times and not a reflection on shorters maturity level. Leaving during the season however....
