Shorter in the portal

You really think it would take Shorter (or most any decent P5 WR) more than 5 minutes to “beat out Chisena”?

No offense intended to Chisena - who has done a fine job as a punt team gunner...... which is more than one could expect.
seriously, where is this shit coming from?
Chisena has never been anywhere near beating out Shorter

Shorter has been a big disappointment to date, but he has lots of potential.

It's tempting to blame the coaches for it. Clearly, he isn't living up to the 5* billing.

But clearly, our offense has become stale the past 2 seasons -- at least during conference play. Is it the WR coaches? Is it Rahne's schemes? Some combination?

But, in the case of Shorter, something just wasn't right. Hopefully he gets it fixed and lives up to his potential.
So who exactly are you throwing under your bus? Shorter? Rahne?

It's clearly not Franklin or his bizarre obsession with "impactful plays", which now is becoming an undeniable danger to team cohesiveness and offensive production, especially against teams of equal or greater capability.

It's time for you to extract your head from either the sand or your ass, Mr. Ostrich.

You can curse the portal and pine for the days of Matt suhey and Mike guman, or you can embrace the portal and make your team better. So far, LSU went there and got a QB and they are headed to the playoffs, Ohio State got a QB and they are on the way to the playoffs, and Penn State got a fat kid from Stanford who never played, a wr from Florida State who promptly vanished, and a good kickoff specialist...but kickoff specialists don't get you to the final four. It's up to the staff to start translation of what they do in recruitment, to the portal, and complete better.

I found it interesting that Franklin mentioned twice today that they need to spread the ball around more. This shortly after he found out about Shorter. He seemed to defend throwing only to Hamler and Friermuth in the past.

If only it were that simple, you could just advise CJF on what to do and the players you want would be in the PSU lineup.

Not..........

You don't know how any of the mentioned examples played out. Whether or not those players targeted the teams they ended up at right from the second they entered the portal or if CJF made any attempt to get them. Or really if one or more of those players would fit into the PSU team, or on the other hand tear apart the chemistry and family atmosphere that CJF values and nurtures.

So I look at what you said as just crying. And I am happy that CJF is calling the shots at my alma mata and favorite team and not you....

Sorry if that is somewhat blunt, but the portal, roster management, and recruiting are just so much more complicated than what mostly gets posted in threads like this.......:)

Relax people.

Shorter will be back at PSU in 2020 and I would very much welcome him back. Justin is simply going through a process we call "maturation". He's simply frustrated with himself, his current situation and his Head Coach's unhealthy obsession with throwing the deep ball to Hamler. I can't say I blame him.

He just needs some time off to rededicate himself. By the time the Blue & White game rolls around, you all will be salivating over what 2020 holds for his NFL future.

That said, he shouldn't play on Saturday. His "targets" should go to Chisena or another worthy, but departing Senior.

This is hopefully true. Did anybody look at all the QBs who transferred out of OSU and think anything negative? Absolutely not. It's merely a part of the process now.

Absolutely. The problem is two fold.

1) most routes we run are deep.
2) we don't run the ball steadily

I'd like to know the number of drives where we came out threw 3 straight times and didn't gain a first down. Watching the games, it seemed like we averaged 2/gm. Not just a 3 and out. Two incomplete bombs and a sack type set of downs.

This transfer portal option has just created the Mercenary Era of College Football. I do not think it will be good fort he sport at all.

as long as the NCAA holds to what they said about enforcing the 1 year sit out. i think a lot of these guys are in there thinking they are playing somewhere next fall. if they knew the rules were going to be enforced this will slow down.

Abandoning your team in the middle of a season is inexcusable. If he entered the portal I would hope Franklin would tell him good luck wherever you land, but you aren’t a Penn State player anymore.

totally agree, and that goes for coaches who are talking to other programs about a job. the AD in those situations should just have them sit out until the decide they want to coach the team they are contracted to coach.

Shorter had problems catching the ball no doubt. It came to boil against Minn. when he dropped the sure catch in the end zone. If he is dropping catchable balls in practice, he may need glasses. Otherwise, he needs to do extra work with QB's. If he is putting too much pressure on himself in games, counselor may help. Cliff needs to distribute the ball. Rahne needs to design plays underneath vs deep balls. By the way, Shorter caught some passes in the last game at Columbus. Hoping it can be worked out between CJF and Shorter so he stays. He is an awesome athlete with three years of eligibility.

Don't understand why now with just 1 game to go.. He couldn't wait until next week?
I can think of a lot of reasons why a player might enter the portal......the last thing I'm going to do is question why a college kid might do it.......

Chisena has never been anywhere near beating out Shorter
From the PSU depth chart vs Ohio State posted on this site:

- There's just one change to this week's depth chart, as former walk-on Dan Chisena is now listed as a starter where
Justin Shorter
was previously listed. There's no OR between Chisena and
Daniel George
. Shorter is now listed as second-team behind
Jahan Dotson

Of course because its senior day. I'lf shorter is pissed about the depth chart, he is a moron.

JF has given Shorter ample opportunities in games, and other than developing a kid in practice, that is about all you can do as a coach.
I never saw anything from Shorter to suggest he is anywhere close to the same league in terms of talent of ARob, Hamilton, Godwin, Blacknall or even Juwan Johnson. I often had to ask myself why he was starting. I am curious if his teammates asked themselves the same question ?

I don’t agree with the idea Shorter isn’t any good so who cares. He is still physically gifted and when the light goes on he could still be a good player.

I read the same thing when Wade went in the portal. He has played well this year and he is the guy with three forced fumbles against OSU.

If Shorter leaves so be it, but I don’t see it as a good thing.

I hear that but we could use 4-5 good WR next year. Expecting that from new guys seems unlikely
And that’s assuming Shorter would progress and get better. That may or may not happen, but so far signs point to it being doubtful.

I view this in a similar fashion to the Eagles who really have a Tight End who operates more as a wideout. When you watch the Eagles play, you see that Wentz always has Ertz as a security blanket. To some extent, Freiermuth is similar in that he’s a great receiving Tight End. Just as Ertz takes balls away from the Eagles wideouts, I wonder if the same is happening here.

After watching #6 this year, I’ve thought about whether he would be more effective in the #87 role if the TE leaves as anticipated. Certainly you hate to not take advantage of Shorter’s skill sets against corners given his height advantage but at the same time, I wonder if he slid into that role if he wouldn’t be a handful. No way most linebackers could check him.

In my view expecting Shorter to be one of 4-5 WR's that can make plays and are team players seems unlikely. For even a talented, highly recruited player to be given all the chances he had this season to make plays and for that player to consistently not make plays beyond the most basic, and even drop more than a few of those, and then for that player to give up on the team and enter the portal, giving up on his team mates, why would anyone expect that player to be a key to the 2020 season?

PSU is redshirting 2 pretty highly sought after WR's and has 5 more very talented WR's committed in the 2020 class. And there is no reason to believe that a couple of those 7 can't come in and show that they can learn the offense and actually catch the balls that are thrown to them and are catchable, and be the compliments to Hamler (if he stays), Dotson, George, and CSB (if he stays)........

Asked specifically about the two redshirting freshmen on Tuesday CJF mentioned that Dunmore was transitioning his body. He looked awful thin in his H.S. highlights, and it looks like the staff is having him concentrate on the S & C program so that he can make an impact in 2020 and beyond.

As a fan, if Shorter would happen to come back and CJF and the team take him back, I'll root for him just as hard as I have been. But as a fan, whether or not he pursues other opportunities I'm more so looking forward to seeing a couple of the 7 new to 2020 players emerge, as Shorter had ample time to shine and he did not make plays. Playmakers are most times evident early in their careers. I'm hoping a couple of the 2020 WR commits enroll early and I'll be at the B/W game looking for some new WR playmakers.......

Sour fans simply make sh!t up and run with it as if it were fact. These aren't the brightest of the bunch.
Except in this case it was fact. Pointed out by others, the Pre OSU chart had Chisena #1 in Shorters spot and Shorter #2 behind Dotsun.

as to Shorter and others, Clifford does use Hamler as an early progression security blanket. He has often blown off what appears to be the medium or shorter route to go for a home run pass or actively seek Hamler. It took all of 3.5 quarters against Minnesota for Clifford to look at Dotsun despite him being sure handed and consistently getting 1st downs. Feels a lot like a coaching issue. Shorter gets open too and we go in a different direction.

for that matter, when we are very effective running the ball, we suddenly kill a drive by throwing three straight passes. This at happened v Iowa, Minny and OSU.

Yeah...because winning 10 games 3 out of 4 years happens with bad coaching. Of course it does....I mean I'm great too after a play doesn't work saying that sucked and we could have done something else. It's not hard to do and playing QB in the stands....I have never once missed an open WR. I hate that PSU is in the mix every year now, so when we lose a game or two....let's blow up the staff every time that occurs. Against Minn our DB's and defense got roasted.....so it was an all around loss....but that would mean we have to be realistic in what actually occurred. I don't hear the calls for PRY though...but did his defense really get stronger as the year went on....no...you know why....THE F__KING SCHEDULE got much harder. That is what happens to most teams. tOSU finally played a decent team and didnt' win by 30.....maybe they should fire Wilson.

It’s exhausting to have to keep pointing out the obvious, but I can’t stand letting the negative nonsense become the narrative

Cliff has often threw to Ham even when he is double or triple covered. This happened often when others were open. Take a deep shot when it is open otherwise throw short. Spread the wealth and keep everyone in the game.
Easy as sh!t to talk about though. I mean defenses don't mask coverages or move people late. You just toss it around and just worry about keeping everyone happy. I mean that is what it's all about. Brees throws to Michael Thomas twice as much as any WR on the squad......he must suck. He'll throw it to him while he is double teamed. I mean QB's don't go to their top targets and playmakers because after all....we need to keep everyone happy. There are tons of QB's out there that never miss an open guy or force the ball in fantasy land. The game is so GD easy from the stands and couch.

Thats whats kind of surprising about this. He looked pretty good and I saw him get open when he was playing the slot position, more so than when he was on the outside.
I really thought the best thing would be for them to target him 8+ times in the RU game.
I mean just when I thought it looked like he was turning the corner he really did turn the corner but it was to the Portal.

The hope is not that the QB will find/hit the open receiver better THAN US AT HOME, but better than the competition.

Of course it’s not simple or easy, but it’s what should be expected of the program.

Welcome to modern college football where if things ain’t pleasin your leavin.
Hey Emmert, are you going to let ......student-athletes transfer 11 times a season soon and before the Bowl Games. It would make every game more interesting with teams adding players to fill voids due to injury. Oh, and bagman would never encourage transfers if a player has.............hurt feelings. Great lessons being learned. Oh, I am not even worried about credits transferring because Anime 101 is a core course at all P5 Universities.

If we don’t see practices, it’s hard to have enough information to know about this.
Maybe Clifford throws a lot to Hamler because he is open and gets the ball more of the time, even if he is getting bracketed. Maybe Clifford has lost trust with one or more of the other receivers over performance problems.
If Levis plays a lot on Saturday and we see the same pattern, I suppose we will have our answer.
