Definitely unfortunate. Shorter has been a big disappointment to date, but he has lots of potential. Nothing's to say he couldn't finally live up to it here, but nowadays, that kind of patience doesn't exist. The portal only amplifies that.
Who knows, though. Maybe the kid legitimately needs a change of scenery. If so, best of luck to him. No hard feelings.
It's tempting to write it all off as him failing to get it done on the field. It's tempting to blame the coaches for it. I imagine there's some combination here. Clearly, he isn't living up to the 5* billing. But clearly, our offense has become stale the past 2 seasons -- at least during conference play -- in terms of spreading the ball around and finding any kind of consistency in the passing game. That trend spans multiple QBs, so it's not merely a case of Clifford zeroing in too much on one or two guys.
Is it the WR coaches? Is it Rahne's schemes? Some combination? Again....hard to pinpoint as some random ass fan on a message board.
Really, really hope we can see guys like Dunmore, Washington, Kuntz, and Lambert step up and make a difference early next season. The talent is there. Plenty of other programs have no problems spreading the ball around to a variety of weapons. We haven't done that since 2017. Absolutely must get that fixed.
But, in the case of Shorter, something just wasn't right. Hopefully he gets it fixed and lives up to his potential.
