Shorter in the portal

LSHIPM

All these Uber-talents on offense? So that there isn’t room for all of them?
And yet, PSU is 76th in the nation in total offense.

Maybe the problem is something more systemic?
Perhaps?

Not according to the Neck Whistle Mafia. That just wouldn’t be possible.
Those guys make $1,000,000 a year to have zero impact in the success of their charges.

God almighty.

Well obviously.

Marshall's point and your point aren't mutually exclusive.

We DO have a ton of RB talent -- probably too many to effectively feed on a weekly basis.

And our offense IS a huge disappointment.

Just because the latter is true doesn't mean the former isn't. I think it's pretty obvious that this system of having 4 quality sophomore-or-younger RBs in the same stable is going to create a portal scenario. Any moron could have predicted that. It's how it goes when you accumulate talent on a roster. My concern is that the attempt to keep everybody happy may end up alienating more than one RB who would rather go someplace and get 15 carries rather than get 6 carries and share with 3 other dudes.

I hope Slade doesn't leave. But if he does, let's just hope he's the only one. I'm not convinced that he would be.

Shocked. Slade will be there next- he will never be the man here. That's going to be the way it is with these young 4-5 stars who don't come in and have a big role by year two. The receivers don't really seem like they are developing well here, other than Hamler. Howe could this guy be such a miss?

Slade I kind of get it- I don't see the 5 stars. More of a third down back.

This transfer portal option has just created the Mercenary Era of College Football. I do not think it will be good fort he sport at all.

Umm.. isnt that teaching one WHERE to shit, not HOW to shit? that puppy is going to be delivered regardless... but hey dont let me stop you from creating the dumbest analogies ever

He's going to OSU. He has been close with Fields for awhile and went on the record saying someone like him would be a dream QB.

Where 3 of the top 5 WRs in the 2020 clsss are going? And he could not beat out Dan Chisena? Does Fleming need a fluffer or something?

To be fair this may be the lethal combination of Shorter just not having the skills to compete against the B10's best CBs, his high personal expectations given his recruiting stars, Clifford's stalled development when it comes to going through progressions, and people pointing out PSU's offensive scheme/coaching deficiencies. Surprised he didn't enter the portal sooner. Won't be surprised when others join him there from that side of the ball.
Clifford is a freshman. I’d hardly say his progression is stalled. Kid is solid. He’s going to be a pretty QB for us over the next 2 years. My only concern is lack of receivers. Let’s face it, we only have two receivers that get open and catch a ball on a regular bases. And the offensive line doesn’t exactly help him either. I’d say Clifford has managed the situation rather well.

Doesn't look that way since there is no indication that he sat out his first year due to injury, but you never know with the NCAA these days.
not sure he'd want. for teams looking for a big te with decent speed, the size to block and the ability to get open, he may well be a late round pick. probably preferable to another year in college.

Clifford is a RS Sophmore not a Freshman

Wow. You must be a couple of branch campus dummies. I predict Slade will be next in the portal and stated that Franklin is bad with wideouts. Doesn't mean Slade is a wideout. Two thoughts in one post, looks like that is too advance of a topic for a couple of branch campus dummies.<<

Interesting. The only time I've ever heard "branch campus dummies" used was by that school that tries to play football to our west.

200.webp

I was thinking the same thingI He'd be shocked at the intelligence of some of the kids I sent there.I'd bet good dough that his IQ is a lot lower than theirs but to each his own!

i can’t imagine keeping a guy as a starter when he is in the portal, or maybe even giving him reps
Not a good message for the rest of the team.
Me either, unless he and Franklin had a conversation that included information we don't know about. If he's definitely gone I wouldn't waste time with him in practice or allow him to go to the bowl game.

Definitely unfortunate. Shorter has been a big disappointment to date, but he has lots of potential. Nothing's to say he couldn't finally live up to it here, but nowadays, that kind of patience doesn't exist. The portal only amplifies that.

Who knows, though. Maybe the kid legitimately needs a change of scenery. If so, best of luck to him. No hard feelings.

It's tempting to write it all off as him failing to get it done on the field. It's tempting to blame the coaches for it. I imagine there's some combination here. Clearly, he isn't living up to the 5* billing. But clearly, our offense has become stale the past 2 seasons -- at least during conference play -- in terms of spreading the ball around and finding any kind of consistency in the passing game. That trend spans multiple QBs, so it's not merely a case of Clifford zeroing in too much on one or two guys.

Is it the WR coaches? Is it Rahne's schemes? Some combination? Again....hard to pinpoint as some random ass fan on a message board.

Really, really hope we can see guys like Dunmore, Washington, Kuntz, and Lambert step up and make a difference early next season. The talent is there. Plenty of other programs have no problems spreading the ball around to a variety of weapons. We haven't done that since 2017. Absolutely must get that fixed.

But, in the case of Shorter, something just wasn't right. Hopefully he gets it fixed and lives up to his potential.
Progress isn't always in a straight line. That's a message that can be very difficult to relate to a young athlete who has been so much more talented than everyone else he ever played against......until, he isn't.....

Not sure why you posted that article in response to the question of if Shorter could or will play this week. It doesn't say anything about that.
Poster asked if Shorters locker would be cleaned out . It goes More I depth about what the portal means .

I do not know if this report of transfer is true, or not. But it reminds me of Saad Blacknall, who seemed to be underutilized by Franklin. Had a bad year, but made some great game-changing catches when needed. I thought Shorter would have a great future. If true, sad

yep just trying to help anyone out there that thinks that blaming an 18 year old kid -- as if he owes you the fan something-- for doing something that he thinks is best for him and perchance that his reasons (coaching, classes, offensive scheme whatever the hell they may be) are far more grounded than as you put it ---hes a non competitor and a quitter-- Kudos

"So far this season Shorter has pulled in 12 receptions for 137 yards. The 6-foot-4 receiver has been targeted on 17 occasions, more than twice in a single game on three occasions."
  • Buffalo: 1 target, 1 catch
  • Pitt: 3 targets, 2 catches
  • Idaho: 3 targets, 3 catches
  • Michigan State: 1 target, 1 catch
  • Iowa: 1 target, 1 catch
  • Ohio State: 5 targets, 3 catches
  • Maryland: 1 target, 1 catch
  • Minnesota: 2 targets, 0 catches

Abandoning your team in the middle of a season is inexcusable. If he entered the portal I would hope Franklin would tell him good luck wherever you land, but you aren’t a Penn State player anymore.

If you listened to Franklin's press conference, he talked about Bowers overcoming his injuries and having tough conversations with him and his family about whether he should stay at Penn State. Bowers did and overcame all obstacles. Franklin also had conversations with Wade and said it didn't make sense for him to leave as he hadn't finished his degree. Now Wade is having a break-out year. My guess is that Shorter entering the portal doesn't mean he going somewhere else at this point or without Franklin battling with him to stay unless there is a bunch of other stuff that we don't know about.

Agreed. There is something fundamentally wrong with a player who quits on his team with 1 game left in the season. If he wanted to leave after Rutgers, who cares? This is how it is. Doing it now, is pure BS.

Very good point.

But I'm happy he did it now. Rutgers is likely a blowout win, so it will be better for the program in the long run for George and other young WR's to get the reps in this last game. The 2 redshirting freshmen have not played so far this season but possibly they are ready now to see the field as well.

So I'm looking forward to Shorter getting on with his life outside of PSU football this week and weekend, and seeing some new talent on the field that possibly can actually catch a football!!!

;););)

Relax people.

Shorter will be back at PSU in 2020 and I would very much welcome him back. Justin is simply going through a process we call "maturation". He's simply frustrated with himself, his current situation and his Head Coach's unhealthy obsession with throwing the deep ball to Hamler. I can't say I blame him.

He just needs some time off to rededicate himself. By the time the Blue & White game rolls around, you all will be salivating over what 2020 holds for his NFL future.

That said, he shouldn't play on Saturday. His "targets" should go to Chisena or another worthy, but departing Senior.
