Should we go transfer portal for 2020 WR talent??

Good points, but we will have an even more experienced Freiermuth at TE commanding a couple more balls a game as well. I think we will be ok with Dotson, Pat, and one new wr getting a couple balls a game. I think we will be a running team first with enough ability in the passing game to get a first down when needed. The Cotton Bowl showed me the light that maybe we are more Wisconsin than Clemson.
Isn’t Wisconsin under center a fair amount.

Unfortunately college football has changed and the vast majority of kids are coming to school first to play and second to get a degree. They can get the degree anywhere so if they are not going to play at PSU they will look for a place where they will. Is there any better example of that than Tommy Stevens?

Didn't Stevens graduate from PSU before he left?

I agree about kids coming for football first and academics second. I think that's sad because most won't make a living playing football. The transfer portal has to make graduating more difficult. Acclimating to a new school and a new football program, getting your credits transferred, repeating classes that don't transfer, etc. Sitting out a year might make the transition easier but waivers seem pretty easy to come by at this point.

agree with what you say. Franklin, however, really has to be careful here. The entire foundation of the program is built upon his notion of “family” and his love for his players. If he starts unceremoniously casting off players that haven’t made super program contributions, where is the family love in that? Could be a massively destabilizing move.

I know what you're saying and agree in general. However, the most unceremonious departure of Franklin's tenure was Stevens, and only because he (and his dad) made it so. On the other hand, we've seen guys, from Akeel Lynch to Mark Allen, leave because they were likely to see greatly reduced playing time, yet they continued to be vocal supporters of PSU. I suspect Franklin's approach to and concern for them had a lot to do with that.

Two tight ends guarantees 8 in the box. That's why one back spread is the formation college football uses I will bet 80% of the time. Our OL would have to perform they way they did in the bowl EVERY game then. Spread them out and get athletes in open space....College Football today.
8 in the box generally means 8 larger bodies which would then have a difficult time covering PSU's tight ends. Granted with the Ravens, having arguably the faster player in the NFL at QB kills 8 in the box, Jackson just runs around the end. The big body defenders cannot cover the Ravens athletic tight ends. It is really about creating and taking advantage of mismatches, something that hopefully improves next year.

If Hamler goes expect Dotson to be moved to the slot where he will thrive. The other guys like Dunmore will fight for the other spot.

The portal isn’t likely. What makes anyone think guys who couldn’t win a spot at their current school could beat out any of our guys? That’s what the portal mainly is. It’s filled with mostly guys who are looking for a better opportunity because they weren’t able to win a starting spot where they are. Those game changing players are few and far between in the portal.

Thats true to a point but no one says you have to put them on the line. Kuntz could be an outlier, sort of like Mike G. was.

why would dotson move to slot

why would dotson move to slot
Hopefully we use him more effectively next season, wherever that is. He has great hands, looks really fast in the open field, and seemed to be limited in catches due to the bromance between clifford and kj.

why would dotson move to slot

Because he fits what PSU wants from their slot receivers. I believe Dotson was backing up Hamler in the slot when Dotson was just breaking into playing time, but then Dotson was moved more outside as the other outside WR's fumbled their chances.

As Dotson can play any of the WR positions, where he plays will more than likely be determined by where the next 3 or 4 WR's play best. For example, if the two EE WR's, Lambert and Dottin (along with the 2 redshirt freshmen practicing this Spring, Dunmore and Jones), look best outside along with George, Dotson inside may be best for the team.

From what we have read it seems to me that Washington may come in with the most B10 ready true freshmen body and get PT right away in the slot, so trying to predict WR positions now is useless. We should know a little more after Spring practice, but individual WR positions, playing time, etc. won't be sorted out until Fall camp and into the non-conference schedule with so many unknowns and new players.....

why would dotson move to slot

Because this is were he played in high school. They moved him to the outside last year because Hamler was in the slot and he wasn't going to replace him there. Even if Dotson was a better option than KJ in the slot KJ is too good to keep off the field and too small to play on the outside. Dotson was also too good to keep off the field and is a far better option on the outside than KJ. If KJ leaves Dotson will shine in the slot more so than the outside and we see which one of our young guys who played on the outside in high school can grab the job on the outside or maybe they even platoon it.

There's no reason to not use the portal if you can actually get a contributor at a position of need.
