while watching PSU replays today.

  1. Beating OSU - "This was PSU's first win over a team ranked #2 or better while being unranked themselves since XXXX" (I forgot the year). How far did they have to dig to come up with that one? You don't play the #1 or #2 team very often, and PSU was typically ranked except for the dark years and sanction years.
  2. Beating Wisconsin - "This was PSU's first outright B1G championship since 1994". Technically true but it conveniently ignores the fact that PSU won the B1G in 2005 & 2008. Why even go there with the "outright" comment? Was it inended to make it look like PSU hasn't been in the hunt for decades?

1. We only had 2 wins over #2 between 1964 (beating #2 Ohio State while unranked) and 2016 anyway. Those being 1982 Nebraska and 1986 Alabama. We had ~ 10 losses against #2 in that same span. Who cares if they reference 1964 or 1986? In either case, it had been a heck of a long time, at least 30 years!

2. They probably mentioned it because the B1G Championship game was for the right to be crowned "outright B1G Champion!" That's the whole point of a title game - no multiple champions anymore!

But when you finish with the same record as another team but you beat that team, you win the conference...just because the Big was fvcked in their stupid rules doesn't make it any less real.

On the bright side, you won't hear either of those this season. My guess is we'll still hear the occasional "redemption" and "healing" garbage.

Of course we were B1G Champions in both 2005 & 2008. Nobody disputes that.

I hate hearing people misuse the word "on". People will say they are waiting at the store on line, or something happened on accident. Someone who makes those mistakes just doesn't pass the eye test.

Things I hate hearing:

"Our best bet long term is to just do the root canal now."
"It's cheaper just to buy a new one."
"Can you stay on the line until I get my supervisor?"
Air escaping
Water dripping.
"Please listen carefully as our menu has changed."

They've all changed, it seems.

"If this is a medical emergency please dial 911."

No shit.

Penn State must have made that mistake a lot last season.

Stupid things I hear:

"He said he wished he had done more." (That's not the line, and you know it.)

"I am not OUTRAGED. ." (Of course you are. We all are. Stop wasting my time.)

Jesus, number one is just plain stupid. An unranked team beating a #1 Or #2 team probably doesn't happen very often. And since, for the most part (minus the dark year's and the sanction years) Penn State WOULD BE RANKED, then our opportunities to beat #1 or 2 while unranked would be incredibly limited, wouldn't they.
When is the last time Ohio State beat 1 or 2 while unranked?

That was my point. What if you beat #1 or 2 while ranked? What if you hadn't played #1 or 2 in a decade but you beat a dozen top 10 teams?

It seems like the media goes out of it's way to create obscure statistics in order to dramatize a story. Not just PSU and not just football.[/QUOTE]

Those people are paid to talk, they've got to say something. You're right, it's nothing more than an irrelevant fact that sounds profound before you analyze it, but sports media thrives on this. Personally, I think this whole thread is just a symptom of the fact that the football season can't start soon enough.

Has Michigan ever beaten a No 2 ranked team?

In general, I agree. In this case, I didn't mind. It was a milestone win. And yes it changed the season but also represented two new realities:

1) PSU actually matched up reasonably well athletically, which is the only reason they were in position to win.

2) The B10 officials didn't interfere to ensure an Ohio State win for a change. Maybe this was because of all the criticism they took for 2014 -- they knew everybody would be watching.

Obviously #1 will continue the way recruiting is going. PSU isn't at 100% parity with Ohio State and Michigan talent, but they're close enough that a lot of games they'll match up well.

Whether #2 continues ... impossible to predict. But it would profoundly change things for Penn State in the marquee games. Imagine the series with Michigan and Ohio State going forward with no more B1G officiating shenanigans. Yeah PSU will still be fortunate to win 50% but whatever their win percentage is, it will be a lot higher if they don't also have to beat the guys in stripes.

Anyway, Ohio State last year was a huge game with fair officiating. And so was the B1G championship. Fair officiating - what a concept!

I suggestion if I may. You seem to have a big chip on your shoulder. Fact is PSU has been an 'also ran' since 1994. A shared championship isn't a champion in my book. It's kinda like being a little bit pregnant. You either are or you're not.
Have a blessed day.

It's all how one phrases things and one can get one's dig in if one so chooses.

There's a woman I work with and everyone, I mean everyone despises her. To give me a comforting thought is that she hopefully retires soon. Although she will undoubtedly work harder at home than she does at work for less money so why retire?

So what to write on her retirement card? if anyone bothers to get her one. The honest truth? I'm so happy you're leaving b*tch! So now I look bad, maybe not since it's the truth and a shared office sentiment. Or go with, "The office won't be the same without you.'" Still the truth and I know the thought behind it.

One could truthfully state, "Alabama hasn't defeated a higher-ranked team since 20??." How many teams have they played higher ranked in recent years? But the fact remains and one can make them sound like a seemingly milquetoast program when it comes to pulling off an upset.

I used to have a similar co-worker. He was lazy, unprepared, and had a bad attitude. I always said that he was the best at what he does. We just didn't know what the hell that was.

Why don't you save the money on the shopping and stay here and do it yourself? And do it quietly, I'm trying to watch the game.

Like I've said this is not just about PSU or just about football. I see similar crazy stats being cited all the time in many sports and I think it's ridiculous. I think the media searches for stuff they can report in an attempt to sensationalize their stories. They might report that a team hasn't beaten an opponent in 3 decades and that might be true. It also might be true that they've only played each other 4 times in 3 decades.

In this case I think they wanted to make it look like PSU hasn't been competitive for a very long time because it would make the 2016 team's accomplishments so much more sensational. They use true stats to sensationalize their story but they do it in a way that's very misleading. That's my complaint and it's not just football PSU.

Here are the facts about outright Big Ten Champions:
1999 - Wisconsin
2001 - Illinois
2003 - Michigan

There were no outright champions in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, etc. When somebody reports that PSU hasn't won an outright championship since 1994 it's true but incredibly misleading. Hardly anybody won an outright championship. That's how it was until they B1G went to a divisional format with a title game. OSU won an outright championship in 1984 and didn't win another one until 2006. Did you hear that reported (as though it's been an extremely long dry spell)?

P.S. PSU certainly fell off from their peak in the 1980s but they won B1G titles in 2005 & 2008. I think they were more than 'also rans'.

Agreed. Maybe it's my generation, but I still can't help but be Samoyed by common grammatical errors. I hate when people don't know the difference between there, their, & they're. Where I live in New England, people always misuse the word "for"...as in "I'll be there for 5:00."

Judgment Day 1997.
Dude - unrelated to this topic or your post but you need to steer clear of the sPitt board - if there is a lower form of life on earth than the people over there it hasn't been found yet. Just complete scum of the earth who relish in the the crimes committed by Sandusky and use it as a punch line - if that isn't the definition of a sick culture I don't know what is. It is fun to stop in and view the stupidity but it is impossible to have a discussion about anything with those troglodytes.
