3. Penn State Nittany Lions
Three years after regaining their full allotment of scholarships after sanctions, the Nittany Lions will be deeper and better.

Those two Big time Tackles for USC are gone, I don't think Darnold will have the same time to throw the ball as he did vs PSU or anybody else they played last year. #3 sounds about right- top 5 for sure for the 2017 team. Thank God SI dose not have OSU No1 I think i would have pucked.

WHAT??? That means OSU and Michigan must be 1 and 2!!!

Michigan with 5 starters returning being ranked #10 in the poll, for example, is crazy. The amount of underserved hype that team gets is really unprecedented. Same record as us over the past 5 years. No Big Ten titles since 2004. They've lost 12 of the last 13 to Ohio State. They shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Ohio State.

Agree. Though they should get a very quick reality check when they face the Florida Gators on Sept. 2 (in Arlington, TX).

Not seeing Pitt ranked.. terrible poll.. not sure why Michigan would be preseason top 10 other than Harbaugh and a returning starting qb.. lots to replace. I actually hope they find a way to be undefeated coming into Happy Valley so we can truck them. Haven't beaten a highly ranked Michigan team in a long time. Would be nice to have a highly anticipated top 5 matchup at home on national tv and lay one on them.

This works. You want some flexibility. Being in the top five helps a lot with perception. Will see how things shake out when the playoff poll hits during the season.

Yep. This is the positive hype train that this team earned heading into the offseason. Anywhere in the top 7 is probably fair and gives us continued momentum for recruiting, perception, etc. 2016 may have been one of the most critical seasons in this programs history.

You get 6-9 months of a recruiting bounce out of it. All of your 2018, 2019 recruits see you as a Top 5 program. Perception = reality for these kids. That fact may not be ideal, but we've seen it work against us in the past. I'll take whatever positive PR we can get from the media, we're f*cking due.

Agreed (emphatically) on all points but one. Over the last 20-30 years UM must be #2 in undeserved hype; a distant second to the Irish--especially when it comes to pre-seasons polls. The few times they're left out, it's not for lack of effort in trying to justify including them.

Oh - me too. I meant perception with regard to how the playoff poll will shake out when it's released. More difficult to make a claim for the Top Four if you're not in the top four or five of the regular polls.

I believe joebatters was refering to JoePa's quote.... Its a reality check.
Okay, now I see ... had he posted his reply in direct response to the post he was referring to (with a grayed out box in his response), it would have been easier understood by someone like me with limited comprehension abilities. I assumed he was responding to the original post and in effect, thanking JP for laying the groundwork for the success of the 2017 team ... I took it as a slight to CJF.

IMO this season will come down to:
  1. Injuries
  2. LB play (Cabinda, Bowen, ?)
  3. DE play (Brown?, Simmons?)
9-3 or worse would be a disappointment.
10-2 is expected (including wins over Pitt & Michigan at home)
11-1 would exceed expectations and set us up for a playoff spot

LB is again a bit of a mystery after our starters. Really hope the experience Brown got last year pays off.

I think 10-2 would be a minor disappointment. 11-1 is expected. 12-0 would slightly exceed expectations. We've raised the expectation bar. Conference championship and playoff is the goal this year.

Oh, heck no PSUFB, if there is anyone on this board that isn’t excited about Penn State’s upcoming season, James, JoeMO, and the rest then maybe there is a Viagra equivalent to get them on track. I can’t wait for the Blue-white game.

I love your optimism. We will definitely be underdogs at OSU so that means we must win the remainder of our games.
