Stevens Transfer Portal

Ohio State went from a QB run first offense to a QB who really was a statue in Haskins. I mean he ran the 40 in offensive lineman leaderboard.

Clifford isn’t a statue just because he is pass first. He can and will make plays with his legs when necessary. If Tommy was the clear guy for the job he would have been named the starter. Franklin said he was first string going into winter workouts. Maybe a little credit has to go to Mr. Clifford for taking advantage of the situation and making it too close to name a starter with a guy who has been here for 5 years.

He sat on the bench for 4 years, and played wherever and whenever he was asked. That seems pretty loyal to me. This is his last chance to start for a full season and impress NFL teams. Why would you begrudge him making the most of it? It’s easy to demand loyalty from others.

Not really begrudging him, probably a great guy and we know he is gifted but if reports are correct that an ultimatum was given then how could he be a leader. Teammates are not going to like that.

The thing i truly dislike is the transfer portal under current rules. It gives guys who are so self invested an outlet to cause team chemistry problems.
Someone stated you got to look out for yourself but in an emotional, uninformed state of mind the portal is screwing guys.

This rule stinks, if you don’t start, don’t work hard, just transfer somewhere else

He graduated from Penn State. That makes him a Penn Stater for life in my book regardless of where he chooses to attend grad school. This ain't about football. It's about dreams. The kid dreams of playing quarterback. Let the kid pursue his dreams. Who are you to whine about his decision?

So, is he a grad transfer? Or a 'regular' transfer (or does it matter anymore)? Curious because I wonder if he has any interest in going back to Indiana, where he originally committed.

I really wanted to see TS get his year in the sun. Not playing has really hurt him I think. All in on Clifford and 'next man up' but hope TS gets to live his dream somewhere.

Well said. Franklin has said on numerous occasions that he prefers a QB who can run, not a running QB. In other words passing skills are far more important.

He likes a QB who can use his feet, but he doesn’t want Braxton Miller.

He's a grad transfer. Can play this season (his only season of eligibility left).

It's funny how yesterday people thought Tommy was a great guy. Unselfish. Team player. And today he's somehow turned into a selfish, me first guy. Let the kid pursue his dreams. It's his life. Some fans need to look in the mirror and take notice of who is really being selfish.

Most fans of any team -- pro or college -- do not like "free agency." There is a loss of team identity, but whether it helps or hurts team chemistry is a case-by-case issue.

In my view, for kids whose (NFL) future may be dependent on whether they play or sit, this is a good thing for them. It might produce better overall equity among college teams as well. The dilemma is for the coaches. I don't think they'll be able to recruit a top quarterback every year and/or run these "dual threat" offenses without taking considerable risk.

Both Levis and Clifford have looked very good in our limited view. IMHO, so has Stevens, but history has shown that the lone starter gets the vast majority of playing time, whether vastly better, slightly better, or a "toss up" relative to the others.

So we could again see one or two QBs in the portal next year. What does Franklin do then? Does he change the system to provide ultra protection for the QB within a limited QB roster, or does he rotate QB's like other positions to keep more than one happy and ready to go?

I don't think Stevens was expecting to be "annointed" starter simply because he's a senior. I suspect he was looking for some level of assurance given this is his last shot at playing.

Seems to me the "starter" designation is becoming increasingly meaningless these days. Franklin could have stated that Stevens would get the nod, but that Clifford would get time in order to build game experience and depth. Steven's starting would be based on his continued success, thus alleviating all the concerns of complacency and notions that competition ends when starters are named)

If I was Franklin and Rahne, I would be examining tape of the Ohio State offense under Haskins and figure out how to make Clifford that much more dangerous as a throwing threat. Clifford is a good athlete but if he does not have the McSorley legs that we relied upon so much in the past, then the coaches need to make Clifford more dangerous.

Its ok tommy stevens is overrated
Well, if that’s truly the case, it would have been fair for Franklin to tell him that last year, so that he could have moved on with more options. It’s pretty easy for us to sit on this board and give our opinions, but I would like to know what those opinions would be if Tommy were your son?

Huh? Haskins was average at best against us (they scored 7 in the first half - thanks Boobie! :) JK) and didn't start to come alive until late in the second half. One of his worst games of the season (noting it was still decent by most standards). 22/39, 270, 3TDS.

Not a bad idea, but way above Rahne's pay grade. Also, if they were thinking along those lines, it should have been in the works since January (if not before).

Haskins' game against Penn State was one game, and yes you are right, we did contain him for much of the game until the defense got too tired and the coaches didnt adapt the defensive scheme to contain Haskins' dink and dump and screen passes. But Haskins was dangerous this season and a lot of it was coaching and play calling. Penn State's coaches would be foolish not to look at Ohio State's offensive playcalling.

The problem with the JoMo theory is that he would be trading a sophomore with limited experience for a 5th year senior with limited experience. Unless there is a significant talent gap between the two, I don't think I would make that trade.
Tommy has four years experience in JoMo’s offense.

Right - I thought you meant watch our game specifically. Agree - Haskins went bezerk last year and barely had to move.

Net plus?! Very high on Clifford - but he is totally green. He threw a TD against Akron (or was it Pitt?) and against Kent State. And now we have no depth. What if Clifford gets hurt? Not that anything could be done if Clifford looks like the better of the two, but no way this is a good thing for PSU.
Exactly, this year is a Tommy-Clifford teeam. One will probably have injuries in a few games. We need both. There ya go ....speculators.. that wish to anoint Shawn over Tommy.

It's a shame, I was really looking forward to seeing Steven's play. Clifford may show glimpses of greatness, but you never really know until they face adversity, on and off the field.

Like it or not, this is going to send a message to current and future QBs. Wait your turn at your own risk, nothing is guaranteed. End result is loyalty buys you nothing. Welcome to the real world.
I want Tommy to stay, but remember this, Sean Clifford's HS team in was in Ohio's big school division (extremely competitive) and he led them to a state title and he was injured a lot that year. Clifford has moxie. He is no slouch. Sorry to see Tommy make this move, but a player who could not practice/play in bowl and then was barely practicing this Spring; then unable to play in BW game, should not be guaranteed a starting position.

Well, if he had been PSU’s QB last year no way in hell do we lose four games.....or three games.....and probably not two games.

We saw some things from Tommy that showed he could be a great QB. I am thinking of passes he threw in BW Game a few years ago, his running abilities, etc. I was high on him having a great '19 season.
But ... So much for loyalty. How could TS expect to be a leader now that he has entered the portal. This squad needs standup leaders. Guess now that the doctors and trainers have him healthy loyalty does not matter to him and his dad.
This transfer portal is so bad for college football and may be really bad for some guys as well. Guess NCAA football has reached the business end of the game and no longer is about good ole state. imo The NCAA has screwed up badly with this rule.
Wish him luck in his future.
Please. Do we know the details and both sides of the story? Why not withhold the pontification until both parties have spoken?

Precisely.

TS needs to do what is best for him at this point. If he got some sort of guarantee that the job was his in the fall and then that deal got nixed, I could understand his frustration and desire to leave in that setting. If he does decide to go, it will be interesting to see if he or his family choose to burn some bridges on the way out of town.
Who else is going to guarantee TS a starting job?

He looked atrocious against Pitt in his second game ever? He was an inch or dropped pass, however you see fit to phrase it, away from winning that game. Or if JoMo played for a tie maybe we win.
Think maybe the UM game might have been a tad closer if we didn’t have our tenth string walking on defense? I don’t think Trace wins this game, but have looked a lot better.
Exactly...and Clifford will start the season with no meaningful snaps? Do you expect him to be better than Trace?

What rule? Only change from the previous regime is that now a coach can't block a transfer. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think that's a good thing.
Agree...same as with the coaching carousel.
