The Nationals Experience

This may be the worst advice you could offer to anyone planning to attend. Aside from the lack of sidewalks and other physical hazards you will be walking through one of the most dangerous areas of the city.

For those new to Pittsburgh there are plenty of options within walking distance that are closer than the Oakland section of the city. Head towards Market Square (downtown), North Shore (Stadiums, Casino and close to the Convention Center/Fan Fest) or the South Side of the city.

Also consider and Uber ride to the Lawrenceville, Mount Washington, Strip District (Not what your thinking), Bloomfield areas of the city. Oakland would be ok as well but only if you are driving.

I said towards Oakland not in Oakland, and there is no easy way to get around the city that has such antiquated traffic patterns, your Uber’s from the casino or strip etc are going to take a lot longer than that 5 minute walk, there is nothing to fear in Pittsburgh if you say otherwise it’s just spook stories.

To get away from the spat that has taken over this thread...

If your wife's birthday falls during Nationals, make sure not to forget to tell her happy birthday.

SMDH.
Not during, just prior...
Nice dinner, check!
A nice wine, check!
Birthday present (PSU gear to wear at NCAA's), check!

All's good!!

Happy Birthday Roar!

Anyone else have anything that they do that makes the experience better?

Probably my #1 tip to getting the most out of the Nationals Experience may be to show respect toward other team's fans and wrestlers. Appreciating a wrestler's effort or a fan's passion can give you some common ground and make for a much more enjoyable experience - whether you're at a bar, waiting in line at a restaurant, on the T, or walking to Fan Fest. Be grateful that there are other fans there, too, supporting their team with as much passion as the PSU fans. You never know: you might find out that they're just like you or their wrestler is just like your favorite PSU wrestler....

The five minute walk you recommended is a death sentence.

We agree to disagree, there has been no crime reported on anyone attending events at PPG from walking down 5th or Forbes. I’ve worked in the city for a decade and it’s not that bad, it’s actually very safe.

I did score Kyle Dake's last lost when he wrestled in the EIWA finals against Kevin LeValley. Kyle was looking to be a 4 Time EIWA Champion and there was of course talk of him being a 4 time National Champ at 4 different weight classes. I circled Kevin LeValley's name and handed my score card to the Referee to sign and that was that. Two weeks later... I was scoring his National Tournament wins and he became a collegiate wrestling legend. Memories beyond belief. Enjoy them all my friends.

Dake was going for his 2nd EIWA title and I don't think there was much talk to 4 titles/4 weight classes just yet.

Yes, exactly what he said. Do not park there and walk. That’s terrible advice.

Haha. Confusing post, I see that now. It was Mrs. Roar’s birthday last Thursday. She got the PSU gear (actually some jewelry)!!

Well, then I will wish a belated Happy Birthday to Mrs. Roar!

Maybe a late birthday gift will be a great tourney with no injuries and plenty of great wrestling. Stay safe in your travels.
