TOM on 165, 174 and 184

Questions, and some Takery:

165: "With the departure of three-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer (Oklahoma State), the Jordans, Isaac (Wisconsin) and Bo (Ohio State), along with Daniel Lewis (Missouri) looked to be contenders at 165. However, two confirmed weight moves, by two-time 157 pound NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez (Illinois) and two-time All-American Brian Realbuto (Cornell), have added to the intrigue at this weight. Martinez is immediately the favorite, having just one loss in his NCAA career, but where Realbuto fits is up for debate. Adding to the intrigue is whether or not Bo Jordan will still be at 165 or whether he moves up to 174."
- I've been out a lot this summer and this is the first I've seen mention of moves for Lewis & Realbuto. I'm guessing Realbuto down & Lewis up, but does anybody have links to other non-TOM news of these? TIA

174:
- I'm still guessing we go Nickal/McCutcheon at 174/184. And I still get a chuckle out of all this summer's Rasheed over-exuberance, given what we've heard of McCutcheon's practice room dominance.
- Also still guessing TanTom goes BoJo/Martin at 174/184
- I don't know the Valencias or Zeke Jones well enough (although I'll always remember him pouting off the arena floor after McCutcheon knocked off his Blake Stauffer in the 2015 R2. It was my first time on the floor at nationals and I wish I had been experienced enough to capture a photo as he completely ignored Stauffer post-match and walked right past me), but I'll go ahead & message-board guess Anthony/Zahid at 174/184 as well.
- all those guesses lead me to refute Alex Steen's conclusion that "This would be good news for Zach Epperly (Virginia Tech), Nathan Jackson (Indiana) and Kyle Crutchmer (Oklahoma State)." I think BoJo's gonna really blossom at 174 this year. Like, return to redshirting bonus-point BoJo blossom, and BoJo >>> all three of Epperly, Jackson & Crutchmer. I think we're in for three epic Bo v Bo battles this season. Anthony V is a real wild-card to me and I have no idea where he slots in with Epperly & Crutchmer, but beyond him, I'm guessing those two sit right in the 3-5 range. Effectively, if this Realbuto news is true (not saying it isn't--just that it's brand spanking new to me), we're really only watching a BoJo for Realbuto swap and an Anthony V for MyMar swap.

184:
- Guess: Myles Martin isn't going to get swallowed up here so easily. I see him fitting in with Brooks, Miklus, McCutcheon & Boyd, behind Dean, Abounader & Dudley.

As far as I know, there is no reported weight change for Lewis. He was 165 last year & I think he will be again this year. The text you quoted doesn't suggest that he'll be changing weights. Or am I missing something?

Carp, you're right! That's me mis-reading. Thanks!

jto -- The Realbuto move is speculation via a Cornell Wrestling newsletter Koll put out this summer. Koll openly speculated Realbuto's weight class for 2016-17. Intermat then ran with a headline suggesting the possible move to 165 was firm. I do not believe it is.

Thanks, man. Been out on vacation. To...get this: Maine! Totally forgot you were up there. Stopped at the Portland Lobster Company on the way to 3 nights in Waldoboro and 2 in Acadia. Bee Yoo tiful up there, man. Where do you live?

I was just visiting Maine last week myself, about a half hour inland from Waldoboro (which I passed on my way) to the Liberty / Montville area. Love it there.

Ha, I wish I were up there! I live in RI now, but grew up pretty close to Waldoboro. I was in a coastal community -- you and tikk have been visiting much more rugged areas (love it!). I want to buy land up there someday.

If either of you guys ever get into a bit of a scrape up there (it's easy to do in any bar), just tell your adversary in a threatening tone that you "chop wood in Appleton". He'll either back off in fear or befriend you for your excellent humor.

If I thought the other Maine Fiddle Camp attendees would scrap with me I'd be sure to remember that line, but they're too crunchy granola to even disagree with a pushy New Yorker. But rugged setting indeed, electricity-less cabins and all. Liberty hosts the country's only octagonal post office, and a general store, and neighboring Montville has only the camp.

Not fast, my friend. The plan is for Nick Lee to start out of the gate at 141 as a freshman in 2017-2018.

I have no idea what the plan is for Nick Lee but I'm certain Cael would not have publically said anything about it as he can't since Nick hasn't signed an LOI yet.

If Nick Lee starts at 141 in 2017-18, one "assumption" from this is that Cael is not counting on Daton Fix being at PSU. Otherwise, he slots Fix in and the first three are Suriano, Fix, Cortez. Of course, either red-shirting Suriano or Fix could also have Lee in the lineup at 141. Just a thought!!!

While it is certainly possible that Nick Lee could be dominant as a true freshman, unless we really need the points, I would rather see Moss or Dinmore (if they can still make 141 in 2017) be in the lineup and let Nick get another year in the room under his belt. I personally don't like to run true freshman out there unless we have no other good alternatives.

Most sane people consider Fix a stretch goal for anyone not named John Smith.

If we were to land Fix, the plan would change.

I consider myself a sane person, and would agree it would be a long shot for Cael to land Fix.

But, when I allow myself to think/dream about the possibilities:

Landing Fix would set up some legendary lower weight battles down the road between PSU and Iowa (making an annual showdown virtually mandatory).

While I have no idea where Suriano, Cortez, and Nick Lee fall weight wise over the next few years, I do know this: After Zain leaves there will be one open slot in one of the bottom four weights. If Fix comes we have four straight studs at bottom weights. And then we follow that up with four more studs in the 57 thru 84 weights. I'm guessing Cael is making that point, and that has to be pretty enticing for Daton. And a bit scary for our competitors.

Last point, I've read a lot about Fix family connections to the OSU program. I still think they are the prohibitive favorite. But if it was a slam dunk, I would have expected him to commit to J Smith already.

Just a thought, but if Spencer Lee can go to Iowa, then Fix can come to Penn State. I agree that if Oklahoma State is a "no brainer" for Fix, he would have committed already. He still may go there, but who knows!!

Agreed, I seem to remember that most of the inside information, for Mark Hall, was that he was an almost sure thing for the Goofers.

For all I know, Fix may be truly undecided. I hope he is -- it increases our odds.

Either way, let's recall that he's part of Flo's November signing day event -- and likely the showcase (esp. with Lee and Yianni D. committed). So he's not publicly committing until then, regardless of his private leanings.

Also that the "if Lee can go to Iowa" theme doesn't hold water. Lee's father did not attend Penn State and was not Cael's teammate.

Doesn't mean Fix can't come to PSU, just that these are mere wishful thinking.

If Fix is a no-brainer, then why is Cael wasting his time visiting the Fix family. Cael must smell some blood in the water.

Unless he bails on Flo. I think either Teasdale or Lee was also set to reveal that day, but then decided to go public early for their own reasons. It's not as if Flo can contract with them or Fix.

It is impossible to know what Fix is thinking, but all I know is if I thought I could be part of a multi year national championship team, I would say sorry Dad, I know it was your alma mater and he was your teammate, but I can't pass up this opportunity. As a Dad, I know I wouldn't stand in the way. Unless we are talking Pitt, everyone has their limit on how accommodating they can be.;)

Lee did his own thing with Flo. Teasdale can't, he's too young, but you're right...there were several others that were going to announce during the early signing period, with Flo as the medium...can't remember who else.

I know wrestling for Cael is a big deal...it's why he gets the out-of-state kids he does. John Smith has an outstanding program too though, and add the connections with his dad and John as teammates, along with the location factor (much easier for the family to see young Daton wrestle if he's at Oklahoma State), it's a tough sell, even for Cael. A small chance though, and Cael will take a run at him.

Even if he doesn't pull off this recruiting coup, does he drive up the cost for Smith? If there is not a full ride offer from Smith already on the table, I'd be using this as leverage. Hey John, had Cael at my house yesterday with quite an offer to wrestle for the defending champs. Any chance you want to reconsider yours?

I don't think Smith is offering a full ride but in my opinion neither is Cael. Aweful lot of talent on both teams to give an unproven, incoming freshman that kind of loot but I'm just as in the dark as the rest when trying to figure out how coaches divvy up dough. With Oklahoma State, they have freshman Picininni and Kaid Brock at 125 and 133 already. They just got Gfeller to commit as well who could be a 141. I'm not saying there's no room for Fix but that's probably a nice chunk going out in just those 3 weights classes without Fix.

True but I doubt his 157 is on scholarship so that helps a lot. Son of university employee must have cheap tuition.

There's always the possibility that Fix intends to wait to make his announcement via the Flo event, but eventually bails and announces early to get speculators and interrogators off his back. Not a prediction, but a possibility.

Until Fix announces, though, I doubt any hardcore coach feels that making a pitch up until the 11th hour is a worthless endeavor. These kids are bad-asses, but they are still kids and capable of changing their minds for a variety of reasons.

This "announcement" will include an NLI signing, I believe. He could give a verbal earlier, but no sense in that with only 3 months to go...my educated guess only.
