I have no problem with any of that. O$U is fine. Some of the things TR doesI don't care for but his team is terrific and a credit to the sport.

The thing I found strange was in the following paragraph (emphasis mine):

"Ohio State won the Big Ten Tournament last season, knocking off eventual national champion Penn State in the process. The Buckeyes had the most combined points over the season. Even though Penn State took home the national title, Ryan said the 2017 Ohio State wrestling team may’ve been better than the 2015 national champion team."

What does that mean?

it means the writer never watched a wrestling match in his life

Ohio State Math. Not exactly John Urschel.

I think......it means the writer added up the points from ncaa's and Big Tens and OSU had more than PSU. I have no idea if this is true or not, nor do I care. I'm guessing and too lazy to look up the details. It is an Osu hype piece. Great school. Great team. Great kids.

Point made, even if some things are not as buttoned down as some would like.

Add up those tournaments and they're still short about 26 points or so. Not a huge deal to me, but if a point is made in that excerpt, it's one off-kilter point.

Agreed........maybe it is points scored in wrestleback after an injury default in the first round. That must be it so I will never have to think about it again.

Maybe summing up all points scored for the entire season? We missed Reno ...

I'm having a hard time making sense of this paragraph in the article:

"In 2016, Olympic champion Kyle Snyder burst onto the college wrestling scene as a freshman. The heavyweight ended his opponent Nick Gwiazdowski’s 88-match winning streak in the national title match."

The first sentence is an absolute mess.

Snyder was a freshman in the 2014-15 season, where he wrestled 197. During that season he lost to Kyven Gadson at the Cliff Keen Vegas Invite in December, lost to Nathan Burak in the tOSU - Iowa dual, lost to Morgan McIntosh in the B1G final. He was seeded #4 at NCAAs, but wrestled above seed to make it to the finals, where he lost by pin to Kyven Gadson. Any time a freshman heavy has only 4 loses on the season, and finishes 2nd, I'd say they "burst onto the wrestling scene."

In the 2015-16 season, Snyder was planning to redshirt and focus on preparation for the Olympics. In January he opted to come off the redshirt, and wrestle 285. He only wrestled 3 matches before the B1G tourney, but he won that tourney. He was seeded #2 at NCAAs, and ended up defeating Gwiz, who was seeded #1, 7-5 SV-1, to end Gwiz's winning streak.

After the 2015-16 season, Snyder won the gold medal at 97 kg in freestyle at the Olympics.

Just a guess, but Ohio State's 2017 NCAA runner-up outscored any other Ohio State team including the 2015 championship team - Ryan believes his 2017 team may have been the best OSU team ever.

It wasn't the greatest sentence ever structured.

That's gotta be demoralizing ... when your best team ever gets bested by PSU's team, which was not at full strength, and which on paper should be even better next year.

Old school news reporters must weep at what has become of news writing of any sort.

I grew up on sports writers like Bill Lyon and Ray Didinger. Now, any goon with an iPhone can "write" for SBNation or Deadspin or this GameHaus dreck.

The reality of now.
The nature nuts continue to recruit very well and despite the losses their lineup will suffer after the 17-18 season they will remain the biggest threat to the Lions.

When fans from other teams talk about just wait until next year, or 2 or 3 years from now a point of contention they miss is it isn't just Penn State that they need to catch.

OSU will be tough next year, but "the team to beat" is over the top with Penn State returning 5 national champs. Also won going away with 80% of its starting roster and only loses 1 starters limited pts. Don't ask this person for stock tips.

It really is this simple.

Maybe the writer also included whatever mid-season Tourney daO$U went to.....given that PSU didn't got to a "Holiday Tourney", that would probably do the trick.... Never seen that metric used before though.....LOL

Yeah, that one changed my world.

This has turned from a literary lesson about checking one's own written words into a discussion about the team that appears to be second best (right now) in 2017-18.

I believe it's dangerous to count out other teams, and I believe it strongly. The easiest-to-understand reason is injuries. The second is a little harder for most to grasp...and that is the mental side of all this. Over-confidence and complacency lead to less-than-needed preparation, and ultimately lower performance. Thank goodness Cael & Co. are at the helm, as they won't let that happen...they are very good at the mental-preparation (physical too) side of our sport.

So while some fans feed on the bravado, boasting and a little bluster, our coaches will not. They'll get down to work, on fundamentals and basics, promoting an environment where the kids are grateful for the opportunity.

Yes, looking at their potential lineup, OSU might have their best team ever next year
On paper they could theoretically be the frontrunner.
Unfortunately on the mat they meet the actual frontrunner.

There was a SI article many years ago about a boxer. I think it was Ernie Terrell.
He was scheduled to meet Ali in a couple weeks.
The article was 3-4 pages long and was a glowing tribute to Terrell, both as a very good boxer, and also a very decent and fine man.
He had overcome all sorts of obstacles growing up and in his career, and he gave back to his community and so on.
The article never once mentioned his upcoming opponent.
The article ended like this:
“In fact you might say that Ernie Terrell is a Prince among boxers. Unfortunately he is meeting the King. Good night, sweet Prince.”

It is because of the point that you are making about the dynamic between Cael and his athletes that there is no chance that the competition will catch up. These are the best kids wrestling against the best kids everyday being led by the best coaching staff and the results speak for themselves. I applaud the excellence in the other teams and enjoy watching kids like Cruz and Clark succeed but the reality is that the competition now comes down to the extent to which Cael and his kids can live up to their own vision of excellence. This is the real drama the rest (sadly for the remaining 99 % of college wrestling) is just the stage upon which this all plays out.
