While the defense was atrocious in the 4th quarter they were OK in the first half holding this team to 3 points and even early in the 3rd were fine. Once the lead got to 14 Pry subbed in several backups to get some experience and it backfired big time and once App St. got the momentum we just couldn't get it back.

So, they did play well for some stretches, just need to develop some conssistancy and for the love of all things good .....learn to tackle!

AO has a tough day but made the play that counted. TCF made some plays as did Donovan Johnson.

Donovan Johnson and TCF seemed to be decent. Not sure who blew coverage on that fade pass into the end zone, AO or Wade

Our scheme lives and dies by how much penetration and pressure our DL can get.

App State countered this with a lot of quick throws against soft coverage.

And our blitz's seemed very slow and unorganized (see two DBs blitzing from the exact same spot leaving a WR completely unguarded).

Pitt will play us with a very similar game plan. This might have been the right medicine to prepare us for a night game on the road, even if half the stadium will be Penn State fans.

Multiple potential blows, none of which could be AO.

Did we really call a double DB blitz? Both guys were within yards of each other and left the slot WR open.

Wade was playing the opposite hash, also the short side. Either he lined up completely wrong or somebody else was missing.

There was no LB remotely close to the play.

AO was playing low on the outside WR.

My bet is one of the two DBs who blitz'd messed up. We don't play 1 deep safety enough for me to think it was on Wade. Without knowing what the play call was, it's untelling.

Nick Scott can hit. That's about it. My 3 year old could cover better.

AO made a big play at end. Was beaten relentlessly all game.

Jan Johnson made 11 tackles. None were impactful

John Reid was on the field after missing last year. Probably better if he stayed off of it.

We had 11 guys on the field at the start of the play. At least 4 of them were clueless pre-snap of what to do.

#17 looks the part. Of a guy who shouldn't be on the field.

Lamont Wade was a big recruit. Have seen him do noting to deserve that.

Micah Parsons is an animal. That's kept in a cage he can't get out of because he's a freshman and the coaches fear playing him more because he's a freshman.

Jarvis Miller made the best defensive play all game. Never saw him much after.

We had one takeaway today. It was the last play of the game.

We got the win. Despite our defense parting like the red sea and tackling air.

I was mildly surprised to see Nick Tarburton out there. I expect to see more of him.

There were too many times our DBs were looking to the sidelines for help on where to line up before the snap. Too much confusion in the defensive backfield.

There was at least one time where Taylor was screaming at a linebacker to get over in coverage and another where the announcers said Cam Brown was out of position. I think we burned timeouts on both.

Seems telling to me when the HC can see we are lined up out of place when the other team shifts. We wasted some timeouts that way.

I will say that these problems can be easily corrected, and that Pitt"s O can be made vulnerable if it assumes we have not corrected them.

GIVENS how depleted the front 7 was - - - they played really good for 3/4.

I think that once they figure out who the players are there - and get Givens and Simmons back - they could be pretty solid (remember, there were probably 8-10 first and second year guys out there, getting there first meaningful action)
FIFY:D

I cannot help but wonder how much of the problem is the constant substitution AND the fact that the first team group never seems to be decided at any position on this team. Tell me a position on offense or defense, that is manned by the same guy for 90% of snaps, other than McScorely. It's just constant switching or subbing: Is McGovern a Guard or Center? Who is the main Right Tackle? Who out of 3 different guys is our workhorse RB? Who, out of 3-5 guys is our main TE? Who of probably eight different guys, constitute our main Defensive Backfield? And don't get me started on Linebacker. How many guys played significant numbers of snaps at LB, seven? I understand that subbing out the DL is supposed to keep the "mad dogs" fresh, but is there a downside?

I seem to recall teams in the not-so-distant past that had one guy play 80-90% of snaps at almost every position. How do they develop any consistency? Hopefully, CJF and the gang were doing a lot of experimentation at different positions during this game and just underestimated App State's ability to continue to come back against the second teamers and new guys (I can hope). I understand that there was a LOT of bad execution out there, and some significant injuries (Simmons, Givens, Stevens), but having a real starting 22 might help. Hopefully we will see a more consistent group of players next week.
