Champs in first three weights are all PA hammers: Karenbauer, Bassett, Herring.

Bassett and Herring are Bishop McCort kids, and Karenbauer is coached by Penn State dad, Mark Steen at Bad Karma, and former PSU wrestler, Wes Phipps at Grove City.

Are these to wrestle in the U15 Pan Ams?

and track says webber beat Bassett.

All athletes wrestled both styles. Rep is chosen based on a criteria that accounted for both styles. One rep at each weight at Pan Ams will wrestle both styles

Am I crazy or was this the worst-publicized tournament in USAW history?

I get that it's not necessarily a "world team", and I probably don't have a horse that'd make that kinda trip... But I follow a fair amount of wrestling and only knew this was happening because Basset's dad put something on Twitter about it.

Really? Did not know that. I saw Keegan won Greco bracket, wasn't sure how he did in freestyle.

Nope...not crazy. I'm friends with their uncle on Facebook and that's how I found out about it.

Absolutely. I follow a lot of wrestling and had no idea about this.

This event got every bit as much hype as BTN gives to replays of Ohio State football losses.

The 52 kg bracket had 2 entries, 44kg had three. If this was an elementary tournament they would have cancelled it. This actually seems like a cool event and something kids should be gunning for. Maybe a prequalifier would help build the hype.

Karenbauer is a stud. I got to watch him a few times this year at our tournament in between coaching my own guys and he just mowed down everyone he faced.

Back when I was a sophomore in HS we had the (dis)pleasure of playing Wes in the D10 semis for football. He gave us fits and dominated our usually stout defense. After graduation gutted our team between my sophomore and junior year, we played them again my junior year in Grove City and they dropped a 77-0 shut out on our heads. On the mat, Wes and Caleb Kolb won state titles within 3 years of each other then GC kinda started to fall off a cliff. They weren’t good for a while and then their youth program started consistently developing some really good kids (i.e. the Hohman brothers) around the time Wes got hired. Couple that with Wes getting more of his guys to attend offseason club practices with Bad Karma, Quest, etc. and it’s no wonder they’ve turned that program back around.

After a Super 32 that was subpar for him, Karenbauer has won a lot this year: Tulsa Nationals, both PA junior and Junior High state tournaments, 1st in Greco/2nd in free in Vegas, top 3 in both styles at both Northeast and Central Regionals (iirc), now 2/1 and winning the spot at Pan Am Team Trials. He’s also a former state champ in gymnastics. He needs to grow a bit/fill out before high school but he’ll be a great lightweight prospect in a few years.

Is this crazy to you guys? What’s next U12.

I just did some research on this event and it looks like you must qualify for it. Top 8 in Fargo, Top four at US Open in Las Vegas or top four at USA Kids Nationals. This must be why the brackets were small. It looks like Bassett was the only one with a full bracket of 8. Herring and Karenbaur had round robins.
Karenbaur beat Chittum in the finals. (Wonder if it’s the college Chittum’s brother). Bassett beat a Fargo champion in his final.
PA only had four reps and three made the team. Hutcherson was the other one. Not sure where he is from.

Yes.

Turnout for most weights was really low. Most fortunately had some tough kids but
it's about as well publicized as most USAW events to be honest (which of course means not well at all). A few releases on the USAW site and on the same schedule as US Open, Regionals, Kids Nat's, Fargo. Actually, the dates and location were posted pretty early for this event as opposed to recent history.

It's typically not well attended for a few reasons. One, it's a boat load of money right after U14 Nationals and Fargo. Two, of you qualify, it's multiple more boatloads of $ to go to U15 Pan Ams, which isn't nearly as strong of a competition as other age groups. Three, U15s are a few days before the first official HS competitions.

We have 2 local kids would have been among favorites who chose to skip it for a camp and a rest before Ultimate Club Duals. Turned out one would have had a round-robin and the other fewer than 8 kids in both styles.

Looks like a USA wrestling money grab to me. What is going on with all the Americans wrestling for other countries. Puerto Rico whole team is UsA kids. Starting to get crazy

So anyone from the USA could go there and attempt to make a team. I was not aware. Thanks PAwrestling.

Not anyone but it is a much easier process being that people that live in Puerto Rico are United States citizens. No need for any type of dual citizenship.
