Well Guys, how are we all feeling after this weekend? I’m definitely feeling optomistic about the rest of the summer for the guys. Sure not everything was perfect this weekend, but everyone is still in position to be where they want to be. It seems like forever since we’ve seen Bo challenged, and he looks like the clear front runner to take on Cox. I’m sure zain and Nolf aren’t satisfied with their weekend but they will be ready for the trials and will be right there to qualify for final X, same with Nico. The young guys are exciting, Brooks and RBY looked flat dominating, on a full team of future studs these two will still be the ones to pick up the Nolf, Bo, zain, DT tourch. I think RBY jumps another level with some size, and being more aware of giving up big moves. The other young guys showed a lot of fight and promise- have a lot of tools to work with. Here’s also to hoping we see some names in the last chance qualifiers. Cheers

How were the final results for all?

Seniors had Nico, and Zain lose in the finals while Bo won his. Nolf finished third, Molinaro finished fourth, Morelli fifth, and Valimont sixth. NLWC member Lefever was sixth.

Juniors had Brooks win with RBY and Seth lose their finals bouts.

Who am I missing?

I would think the NLWC is ran similar to the D1 team and treat the US Open like the B10s, with the goal being making the World Team for their respective grouping.

If thats the case our guys are in great position to see several guys making the team. Including alternates that while not being the guy get the training and experience of being the guy.

Other than what was already discussed, l was pretty impressed with Anthony Valencia—seems to have rekindled the fire. David Carr continues to look like the real deal. Sasso, Hoffman, Alirez, and Hidlay the younger/bigger too.

I’m going to have to make it out to Vegas for one of these some day. So much great wrestling at once.

I also found myself really liking solo Willie calls of matches. No diarrhea of the mouth, just enough info.

wilbur is really good. he knows things

Verk took 5th in Greco
Verk was wrestling both Greco and FS matches on Friday with short gaps between matches. On the upcoming matches on Flo's Arena, I saw Verk listed as up shortly on 2 different mats (1 FS, 1 Greco)! He wrestled at least 6 matches on Friday, maybe more. He said he was quite sore at the end of that day!!

He can go for a couple hours in the room, but gets sore from 42 minutes of wrestling in a tournament? I think he tweeted that for massage sympathy from his girlfriend. :)

"Matches are wrestled for a reason". Not a bad quote for all competitions, I feel.

In Senior Men's Freestyle...
-- Four No. 1 Seeds won in the ten weights, IMar, D-Ringer, Gadson, and Coon.
-- Four No. 1 Seeds lost in the finals.
-- Two No. 2's, a #3, a #5, a #6, and a #10 won their weight.

In Junior Freestyle...
-- Four No. 1 Seeds won in the ten weights, Heinselman, Sasso, Brooks, Cassioppi.
-- Three No. 1 Seeds lost in the finals.
-- Two No. 2's, three #3's, and an unseeded guy won their weight.
-- Two unseeded guys made the finals, one winning (97kg), and one losing (57kg)

Enjoyed the Open. For the current and ex-PSU guys that lost along the way, the sun came up the next day and they had a lesson that can't be learned in the room, but it can be corrected in the room. The NLWC is here to stay, and is a force that I see improving.

I also see and hear more interest from Penn State fans that never cared much about freestyle before. DT and the recent PSU wrestlers that are doing well appear to be drawing new fans.

2019-2020 team thoughts

Verkleeren will never be a 157. Second year in a row he got horsed a bit up at 70KG. But I understand not wanting to suck down to 65KG when you are expecting to make a run at 149 next year. I almost wish he were a 141, but understand there are complications with that. He's probably hoping RBY and Lee stay put the next couple years. To be honest, my AA expectations are pretty low, but I do think he is talented. Just wish there was a 145 pound weight class for him.

RBY is super talented, just don't think he wrestled his best tournament. Looked a little flat against Hernandez. Glory looked out of form too, so these things happen when coming off a full collegiate season. I did underestimate Tagg quite a bit. Im gonna go back and watch Tagg's other matches. Have to think RBY is the favorite to win the challenge tournament at WTT (should he enter). Trying to think of some other 61KG dudes that could give him trouble. Maybe Bartlett, Decatur, or Arujau (probably gonna stick with seniors and at 57). Really want him to make the team because we usually see team members jump levels.

Seth Nevills is what he is-- a limited athlete with exceptional size, strength, and 285 technique. Typical overachieving Nevills mold... but with more size! Those athletic deficits showed against Cass, but Im hoping the quick semi turnaround had something to do with it (Cass had a semi walkover). He will have trouble with quicker heavies, but his size and strength allows him to make up for his slow reaction time against 95% of heavyweights. Cass was the 5%. Excited to see if any of his movement improves with physical maturity. If Cassar moves on, I expect Nevills to low AA.

Aaron Brooks. How can you not love this dude. Leg attacks for days + elite scrambling ability. I would love to see what he could do right away. Things could be made easier with a Mark Hall redshirt (longshot, IMO), but if he wants to go 184, Rasheed could be the odd man man out. Another year on the Junior team should serve him well, but I do worry about going a loaded schedule for over a year. The kid was everywhere this year. With Hidlay up at 86kg, I don't see anyone close to challenging him. I think he'd destroy Plott. Immediate contender and that's not an uncommon take.

Brody Teske. Just not in love with his wrestling style as a 125. His defense isn't good enough to fend off the quick ones. He could absolutely qualify, but right now he's just a guy that can win some duals and score a few points at Big Tens. I don't expect that to change. Should be a battle with Matty Parker.

Manville- Greco no care, next

Joe Lee. Don't expect him to be as good as Nick, but he's a little more explosive. Reminds me of Dylan Alton.... which probably isn't the best compliment, but also not the worst. Im glad he gets another year to develop in a college room. He's a question mark, but certainly a lot of upside.

Hoping to see Beard, Hall, Berge, and Nick Lee soon! Pretty sure Beard is qualified for Junior WTT after placing 7th at the 2018 US Open. Hoping Nick Lee and Berge enter U23s.

Really like this post lemon, agree with most all of it, with a few adds:

Verk - spot on. He has been the same size for a couple years now.

RBY/Tagg - like Brooks, Tagg has been training at the OTC for a year now, pointing towards making the team. It makes a difference. Even with that, I like RBY if he can get through the challenge tournament - in freestyle this isn't a gimme, sh*t happens.

Brooks - looked dominant, but he will have a bump or two in folk - even our all-timers did - as much crossover as there is with free, folk is different. Right now he is focused on free and it shows. I agree he is an immediate contender eventually (if that makes sense) if there is no RS, but I wouldn't pick him to win a natty in December.

Teske - what he brings to the table - gamer and a tank. That can take you a long way in college. Expectations are out of whack here, he's finishing his trFR season. I don't think anyone expected him to be RBY or a Nick Lee, but that's what you get compared to. I think the battle between Teske and Parker will be a good one, Matt being a bit more polished and would have a physical edge I think, but Teske is a scrapper and Matt will keep you in the match which will be dangerous against Teske. Whoever wins the job will be competing in their first season of eligibility, I could certainly wait until they were rsSophs to pass judgement with these kind of guys. Berge and Verk certainly get the benefit of that doubt and I don't think Teske came in nearly as lauded.

Joe Lee - won't be in the lineup until 2020 as a rsFR. He's still really young, coming off a serious injury - I'm not sure how you can be anything but excited about this kid. Pick more than 3 kids in the class of 2019 you'd rather have than him. Go ahead, I dare you.

Low AA for Snacks is >= our results for all recent years except this year though right?

Dice - I could be mistaken but I believe Verk wrestled 145 his HS freshman year. and would occasionally bump to 152 for team dual purposes.
