What should replace lost treasures in State college?

What was the name of the pizza place on North Atherton that used to play 3 Stooges videos all the time?
Village Inn Pizza.

Great deal on pitchers and pizza.

Became a weekly outing for our crew. And this was our call:

This was mid-Seventies, and the films were in some kind of early video cassette format. They sat there in a pile and customers would take turns choosing what to play next. All old time comedy shorts....Stooges, Lil Rascals, Spanky, etc.

I still miss Hiway pizza and Roy Rogers.

Some fair to middlin suggestions here

Hi Way Pizza (Sicilian) is my favorite Pizza on earth. I have not had a slice in over 5 years, and have seriously considered driving from Pittsburgh to State College for that reason alone.

There is what seems like a spin-off of the old style Hi-Way in the western mid-state counties. It is called Best-Way, with the same kind of Sicilian slices. I guess maybe it actually predates Hi-Way.

It may be. I've never tried Best-Way and it appears none are located in the Pittsburgh area. I love the crust and sauce on Hi Way Sicilian.

Bring back Pedro's Mexican Restaurant! Great late-night bite and the laxative effect was often welcomed in the AM!

YES! It is where I developed my love for mexican food. However looking back I think it was probably not really mexican after spending a few years in CA. A friend and I would always go see the Pink Floyd's the Wall at Nickelodean and go to Pedro's after.

Post House Tavern - when I was in grad school (postponed the world after the B.S.) the prof I worked for took his research assistants to the Post House Tavern on Friday afternoons...he'd buy and have a drink with us...then be off on his way...

Also caught breakfast sometime at the Pancake Cottage downtown - hole in the wall...

I loved the Pancake Cottage! Their pancakes were so much better than the Waffle Shop. The one thing I hated there was the "Moo Cow Creamers." They had the head of a cow and they dispensed cream (or whatever cream substitute they put in them) that invariably amounted to nothing or far too much. Mrs. Ridens once bought me one for a gag gift. The Pancake Cottage was right across from the Skeller (don't get me started on that topic).

Hi way pizza squares are similar to Old Forge style pizza in NE PA.

I haven't found either duplicated anywhere else.

Pizza is seemingly such a simple recipe but there are so many varieties it amazes me.

When there is a particular variant it can be a real memory trigger.

My family ate at Hiway when I came for freshman orientation. After a 4 hour drive probably anything would have tasted fabulous. Still, eating it makes me feel 18 and full of wonder.

I agree. I love HiWay Pizza. When I was a senior at PSU in 69-70 I lived on HiWay Pizza. Ate it almost every day. I still crave it.

I like Brothers. Shoot me.

No reason to be ashamed about Brothers. They were consistent and the style of pizza was exactly what you'd expect if you went into a random Pizza place name Tony's or Garibaldis or something, all over the state.

Due to their location right on College Ave and the front facade all-glass, it was always kept pretty clean & bright too. You were pretty sure you were not gonna get food poisoning. Cheap too. I have no idea how they managed to make money. Maybe they were a front :)

Are they still open?

I remember all-you-can-eat nights from Sunday to Thursday. Herlochers (spaghetti), Pizza Slut, Roy Rogers and one other. Same people at every location firing it down for about $1.50. My parents would send me $10 every week plus my $67/month rent. Great times.

Early 80's, there was a place just off East College Ave where you rented a little room , like 8' X 8' with a couch and a TV and they put a movie of your choice on via VHS. They must have had 20 or so rooms in the place. Great date spot.
Oh yes. I have no idea why I thought that was a good idea. Oh wait, I do.

At some point HIway (was it HiWay or Highway?) got away from basic squares and got into fancy artisinal pizzas.

I remember something like $5 for 2 slices or something like that for the squares. But they were big & think bread and practically enough food for the day.

Brothers pizza by UBC (I think it's still there) had 2 slices & a small coke for $2 and that was ok, but not as substantial.

Roy Rogers always had biscusts for like 29 cents or something and that gave you access to the unlimited fixins bar. And for as long as you could maintain the 32 oz cup from freshman year, free refills!
I have never recovered from the loss of the Train Station.

Cattle car hogies were the standard. Get one about 1am when we were getting our 2nd wind....

Remember the all hot dog joint behind McClanahans in the late 70’s? That was a late night stop, too.

It was called Nickelodeon.

I still always get two slices and a Sprite every trip to State College. Another lunch is always Bradley’s cheese steak, fries and a soda.

Unfortunately we don’t have those easy choices here in MN

Frugal Mcdougals on college. 15 cent cheese burgers. Pop's Mexi-Hot's also on college

I grew up in State College. I remember Nickelodeon well. It was great before you could rent video tapes at Mike’s Video. I also remember Nittany Hot Springs where you could rent hot tubs by the hour. The hot tub idea might be the grossest idea of all time.

I say bring back the Burger King that was half the size of Beaver Stadium downtown. It was right near McLanahans. It had a few levels and was always empty. You could have fit 500 people in there easily

There was another arcade out east for a few years. It ran on tokens - 5 for a dollar of course. Golden Dome?

The Burger King as the train station etc.

Who remembers the garden theatre. Ok where was it.

Wasn't the Garden Theater on the corner of Garner and Beaver? I think Mario’s and Luigi’s was where the old Howard Johnson was on N Atherton, across from Waffle Shop. Unfortunately, Mario’s and Luigi’s closed last year. They had good Italian.

Armenara Lanes on Sowers St. had cheap pitchers and great pool tables. Spent a lot of time in there.

There were a bunch of theaters downtown - Cinemas, State, Movies. One more can't recall if it was Garden. On first blick of Allen Street next to the old Bostonian Limited/Corner Room/Zeno's. Last I saw it was turned into a trendy clothing store.

Mario and Luigi's on N. Atherton. The building still looks a bit like one, excepting the colors. But I think it, too, is closed.
