I love Wawa but their hoagies went downhill when they stopped getting rolls delivered and switched to those pre baked microwaved rolls

what????

neither company has franchises. all Wawa stores and all Sheetz stores are company owned. So every Wawa has the same owner, and every Sheetz has the same owner.

I meant to say manager. Al depends on who runs the store.

No love for Turkey Hill?? I only know of two that are still around. One in Myerstown and one in Adamstown.

Wawa has for the most part renovated or moved into all new facilities. One complaint I would have is they are getting very expensive, especially on non-Wawa products. Sheets has generally costs less, so a few points for them.
Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Peanut Butter Cup is best ice cream.

Do they have kiosks now? They just had pre-made stuff when I was there.

No - but you can buy Scotch, scented eye drops, a corn dog, and a ‘girlie magazine’ without anyone blinking an eye. And they always greet you with a smile!

It's a close call for me. There are some foods I like better at Sheetz and some at Wawa. There aren't any Wawa stores near me so I don't eat at them nearly as often Sheetz.
I think Sheetz wins for me ultimately cause they are based local to me in Altoona.
Also they give back to the community. I don't know if Wawa does or not since we don't have any where I live.

I feel like i am missing out as I have purchased gas at both but never entered either establishment.

Born and raised in WPA...grew up on the old Sheetz model. Always appreciated what they offered. Then I lived in EPA for a few years, and DAMN!!!

I. Love. Wawa.

Sheetz has kept innovating with their new layout and I’m a fan of both chains, but I give credit where it’s due...love me some WowWow.

Live in New England now, and among all the other suck up here is the lack of anything even close to Wawa or Sheetz. They have something called Cumberland Farm which has recently renovated their layout to look more like Wawa and Sheetz, but it’s a hollow shell of convenience compared to the 2 kings of the industry.

Wawa just opened near me in South Florida (coconut creek / West Boca area) and the locals are losing their minds, never had a place like this. Kids going there to hang out, people raving about the milkshakes and hot subs. Heard several people loving using the kiosk to order food. Just about the same as the one I frequented in Allentown but right now it's the new factor here.

Personally I like Wawa food better but in fairness it's been awhile since I've been to Sheetz. Used to make a stop at the one in Mifflintown for gas and food on the way up to SC, remember it being pretty good too.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are owned by the same company. There is no real difference between them.

LOL. Please....

SHEETZ NAMED CONVENIENCE STORE OF THE YEAR, BECOMING THE FIRST TWO-TIME AWARD WINNER
In the award's 28-year history, Sheetz becomes the first convenience store to win the honors twice, earning the 1994 and 2017 titles.

Altoona, PA (July 19, 2017) —Sheetz, one of America’s fastest-growing family-owned and operated convenience retailers for more than 65 years, is proud to announce that is has been named Convenience Store Decisions’ 2017 Chain of the Year—an annual award honoring a convenience chain displaying industry innovation and superior retail experience.

“We are so proud to be recognized by Convenience Store Decisions as the 2017 Convenience Store Chain of the Year,” said Sheetz President and CEO Joe Sheetz. “This recognition truly belongs to our employees and to the customers who have supported us for the past 65 years. Sheetz would not be the company it is today without great employees and loyal customers.”

The 2017 honor marks Sheetz as the first convenience store in the award’s 28-year history to hold the title for a second year. Sheetz was first honored as Chain of the Year in 1994, after a decade of rapid coastal expansion with the chain spanning 190 locations. Sheetz has since expanded to over 550 locations in six states and in the past year been recognized by Fortune as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, a Top 12 Best Places to Work for Women and Top 35 Best Workplaces for Millennials.

“Sheetz remains a beacon of innovation that every convenience store chain can admire. It is a family-owned business that remains true to its employees and the communities it serves” said John Lofstock, Editor-in-Chief of Convenience Store Decisions. “Family businesses made this industry what it is today and as long as outstanding companies like Sheetz continue to thrive, the convenience store industry will continue to reach new heights.”

Sheetz remains one of America’s fastest growing family-owned and operated retailed, with eight Sheetz family members spanning three generations currently serving on the Executive Committee, and eight family members holding a role in the business today.

And that won't change my mind about WaWa vs Sheetz.

My experience with Sheetz has been primarily State College Altoona Hollidaysbyrg and I was not impressed with their coffee food or staff. For me It's WaWa and it's not even close.

I had wawa just once on a road trip and the food was almost inedible. I’ve always been a sheetz person.... but I just recently discovered the get gos that have food are much superior to sheetz. I’ve only had a couple buffalo chicken subs at two different get gos, so it’s a limited sample, but both were very good. Everything bread is awesome.

I'm somewhat neutral on which has the better customer experience, but I'm friends with some of the Wood family members (Wawa owners) and you will not find nicer, more philanthropic people anywhere.

I prefer Royal Farms over both WaWa and Sheetz but during the summer I go WaWa because their cold-brew cannot be beat.

Royal Farms stores are really good, and they are moving into the Wawa marketplace. They are building one on 202 in Delaware County just north of the Delaware state line. There is a Wawa just down the street. Should be interesting to see how they do.

I work off a road that has two Wawas ar either end and a Sheetz in between. I would crawl the length of that road in broken glass past the Wawas to get to Sheetz. Every Wawa I have ever been in reeks of burnt cheese. A singularly unappealing stench to me. But, to be fair, I do love their Thanksgiving goobler bowl. Turkey Hill has the best iced teas.

The daughter of a good friend now lives in DC. She grew up on Wawa, and was quite excited about the new facility. Her biggest complaint, at least for the 1st week it was open, was that the lines for ordering food were insane, because so many people attempting to place an order had never before been to a Wawa, and didn't know how to use the ordering kiosks.

Sheetz also as a presence in the area but they would never build a store without being able to sell gas - so, likely no city stores anytime soon. There is actually a Sheetz about five minutes from my house but since living in NoVa I think I’ve had maybe one MTO - don’t go there for gas because of the Giant food store deal with Shell. Still, it’s always packed - especially in the morning when all the work crews are loading up. The closest Wawa is in Sterling but I haven’t been. I hit the one on Rt 1 S heading home from Langhorne all the time though.

I've never had good food from Sheetz, and don't like the coffee either.

Most WaWa food stinks too, but they have great coffee and bakery items (for what it is). Donuts, cookies and most importantly the pretzels at WaWa are awesome and puts them on top.

WaWa is better, but both chains are better than any other competitors I've seen around the country.

WAWA.

I like both, but living in New Jersey, there are no Sheetz stores. So I don't get to Sheetz very often. Still, WaWa is the cat's ass.

We also have QuickChek in New Jersey. WaWa is better.

There is a Sheetz on S. Pugh Street in State College where Tony's Big Easy / Lulu's Nightspot used to be that is a store with no gas. Never say never.

Wow, that's a bit of a shock. I remember working in the industry for 7-11 in the late 90's and Sheetz was all about (and pioneering) being a 'destination' (like a mini-Wal-Mart) for people which is why they built massive, gas superstores out in the middle of nowhere.

Yes. I forgot about GetGo. I've eaten there a few times and it's way better than Sheetz. I just can't seem to break the Sheetz habit though.

Wawa has a few locations in center city now, the largest opened about a year ago.

Yeah, like Tom noted they just opened on in DC not far from where I work. Pretty good move since there are a few 7-11's and the rest are CVS. No other convenience stores though plenty of Starbucks and other coffee shops for the @BobPSU92 crowd...no place for good, cheap regular coffee and quick, cheap sandwiches.

Not commenting on the food but I can comment on Wawa’s coffee program..... as my name implies I work as a beverage consultant primarily in the coffee arena. The Wawa coffee program is considered by most in the QSR / CS industry as one of the best managed and highest quality. The roasters Wawa use, the quality of the bean blend, and their varietal program are top notch. It is not positioned to match SB or DD, but to offer a very nice rich roast at a reasonable fair price point (especially compared to SB).

Here's the deal. It's pretty simple.

-Wawa was and is a dairy. They opened convenience stores that offered fresh produce, dairy products, deli meats and cheeses, and very good coffee.
-Sheetz was an average to fairly dirty convenience store.

The model of both converged from those different ends of the spectrum.

Wawa expanded to add gas pumps and modified their deli counter to sell sandwiches with good quality meat, cheese, and amoroso rolls.

Sheetz offers lower quality meat (they sometimes give an option to pay extra for dietz and watson), their bread is meh, everything other option is fried, and the deal breaker for me is that they offer french fries on deli sandwiches and provide an option for Dr Pepper BBQ sauce. Their coffee is also horrendously bad. Seriously, it's hard to drink, even loaded with cream and sugar.

Even though Wawa went down a notch when they stopped using amoroso rolls, it's still no contest. With all due respect to those living west of state college, Sheetz is a poor-man's Wawa.
