Why is Clarion on our schedule?

Sorry if it's a dumb question but there must be a good reason.
It is a dumb question.

Do you even follow wrestling? Clarion is division 1 in wrestling. Clarion has had seasons where they finished ahead of PSU. Clarion is better than some big10 teams.

Psu already wrestled Iowa, Michigan, Ohio state. Who should they schedule? Maybe ok state or Cornell. Who cares. Cael has this coaching thing figured out.

Clarion could beat which Big10 teams?

This question is absolutely ridiculous!

I think it's an absolutely awesome thing for Pennsylvania wrestling. I actually wish they could pack more people in Rec Hall for this match.

I'd like to see Bloomsburg, F&M, Bucknell, Drexel, Edinboro, and Lock Haven on future schedules. This is good for PA wrestling and the sport in general. We already wrestle Lehigh and Penn doesn't need any help. Pitt can rot.
Wrestled Bucknell at bucknell a few years ago. Bo wrestled Phipps

Boro would get slaughtered if they wrestled PSU this year. They’re just not the same Boro teams of years past. When Flynn/Moore/Port left for WVU, they were absolutely decimated by transfers. Years later, they’re still a long (LONG) ways away from being the team trophy winning team they were a few years ago.

Clarion has had a nice little resurgence under Coach Ferraro. He’s pulled in some solid kids to help keep them afloat. None quite the level of the Wade Schalles, Kurt Angle, Bekzod Abdurakminov (sp?), or Frankie Edgar type guys of years past, but solid guys nonetheless
One of those boro transfer's is now a coach at clarion

Because apart from Brock Mauller, they have a wrestler with the second best name in college wrestling.

Suds Dubler.

(It gives me fond memories of my days in Pinchot when weekend operation planning began with "Stargazer's" refrain: "I don't know what we're doing this weekend, but I'm pretty sure it involves alcohol". Ah, to be young again)
Completely off topic of talking about Clarion but looking at brackets for the Iowa high school state tournament and I came across another great name…Rowdy Neighbor! Has to be a top 10 name

Scheduling a team like Clarion is good for the sport of wrestling in the state of PA. Our guys get a chance to open things up and send the crowd home happy on Senior Night, while Clarion gets the chance to go against top competition in a great environment. Win/Win. Considering our results since 2011 it's hard to question anything Cael does in terms of scheduling or preparation.

Maryland.

I know Clarion has finished as high as third in team scoring. They actually finished ahead of EVERY B10 team that year except Iowa.

None if full lineups are fielded. Clarion is improving but let's not get carried away.

False.

Bloomsburg beat Maryland and Arizona state in 2013. Clarion is better than Bloomsburg.

Clarion is not improving. PSAC schools have taken a step back since Cael came to PSU. Cael united the tribes and built a super power. Clarion is still d1. They are not top 10 anymore but they will serve a purpose.

And Maryland is much better than they were in 2013. Like others have said, Clarion is improving but they aren’t beating any Big 10 team right now

Maryland wasn't in the Big Ten in 2013. I thought the conversation was about 2023. Regardless, wrestling PA schools is a fabulous thing, and 2-3 each year (which would include the annual Lehigh dual) is great.

You don't know who they can beat until they wrestle. We do know past performance. PSAC schools have beaten B10 teams. Fact.

Could Toledo beat Paterno and psu in football(2000)?

Can clarion beat Maryland today? Who cares. Cael doesn't.

I don’t think it was a dumb question, FWIW. A dumb question wouldn’t generate 66 posts and counting discussing it.

A dumb question typically generates a thousand responses about Iceland, how to properly prepare specific meats, candle making, rag dolling and just about any other subject one might be surprised to find being discussed on a wrestling message board.

I messaged Cael once on Twitter. He responded confirming he schedules smaller PA programs to provide some press to enhance their viability. More healthy PA D1 wrestling programs create more opportunities for PA HSers, which is in the best overall interest of PA wrestling.

Not sure it's a dumb question either, but not sure why it needs to be asked. Heck, why Lock Haven?, why Lehigh?, why Rider?, why Lehigh?, why Oregon State?, ad infinitum, year after year.

Scheduling is not easy, and the balance the coaches try to achieve with limited weekends, opponent availability, helping PA schools, etc., I believe to be extraordinary.

I get it, this is a forum and (almost) anything is free game. Real wrestling talk has taken a hit here over the years though.

In the good old days, even Bloomsburg was a challenge for us, we wrestled them every year from 1978 - 1993 and lost 5 and tied 1 if memory serves. Ricky Bonomo won three titles for Bloom and Lyco may know the Champs for Clarion, at least Charlie Heller.

We wrestled Bloomsburg in 2011, the year wrestling was invented. 😉
I was at that dual. Got to see Taylor and Ruth wrestle for the first time (it was PSU's first dual fall 2010). But Bloomsburg in 2010 and now is nothing like what they were like in the 70's and 80's--same for Clarion and Edinboro sadly. The AD's at those schools really de-emphasized wrestling at those schools. Sad!

Fond memories of watching that 1973 Clarion team - 3 NCAA champs! Wade Schalles - wow! The wrestling world definitely took notice.

Happy that Clarion is coming to Rec Hall even though a return to the glory years may not be imminent.

Had you left out “on Twitter”, I’d been even more impressed and wondering just how connected you are.

Posted by the guy who created the B1G seeding thread in response to the guy that created the GIFs-only thread…

But I wont read anything into it. :)

I disagree with this. As a percent of content wrestling discussion is down but overall volume I think is way up. As the years have passed and PSU continues to dominate more and more people are stopping by regularly, meeting before and after duals and tournaments and as such become friendly or gasp...friends. Friends tend to discuss more than just one topic. I prefer to think of this board as a men's board of a group that are all interested in wrestling, many consider it a passion but as friends they discuss many things that are of interest.
