Why no Facundo or Lee at the middle weight classes?

For now, Facundo is redshirting as he develops. A decision could be made within the next month based on HTH vs Edsell in the room in combination with dual/tournament results.

J. Lee is a longer story, for now Barraclough has earned the right to start.

If it's Matt Lee you are referring to, he's a work-in-progress. Very good and improving every day.

You make it sound so simple.🤨

In my most I’m just a fan and know absolutely nothing about what is going on in the room way, I really hope Facundo’s shirt is pulled right after the Scuffle!

If we had a Cael doll where you pulled a string and it spoke various stock phrases (like the “Executive Yes Man”), that would be one of the phrases
It would be hilarious if he claimed video difficulty on one of these media calls, and then got caught playing standardized, pre-recorded answers on the audio feed.

Casey walks into the office, sees Cael reclining with his feet up on the desk . . .

Casey: Hey, what’s up? I thought you had a media conference right now?
Cael: Oh, I do. It’s going pretty — hold on a second, can you go the computer there, and click on that Button 4 — no, wait, Button 2 — in the lower left corner of the screen?
Casey clicks . . .
Pre-recorded Cael: Well, you know, it’s a process . . .

But it turns out Casey accidentally clicks on “start video”, too . . .

Would appreciate hearing more detail about JLee if you can share Roar. Pulling for Joe.

Hope you enjoyed the match tonight.

Brian Meyer is a good test for Edsell. NQ from last year and just beat Jake Wentzel. Winnable match for Creighton, Meyer definitely won't blow it open on him.

Edsell keeps winning. No need to pull a shirt when the incumbent hasn't lost in two seasons.
No need to pull it yet.

But tonight was his first career win over a starter with a winning record. A good sign, not a conclusion.

The next few matches will tell us a lot more about Edsell: 27 Meyer (Lehigh), then the Collegiate Duals vs. 25 Yant (UNI), 17 Ramirez (Cornell), and possibly 6 Valencia (Arizona State). If he wins the first 3 (especially Ramirez, who beat Griffith) and has a respectable showing against Valencia, that would be a good case to continue starting.

And a reminder: Geno Morelli was better when Cael pulled Mark Hall's shirt. Of course Hall was probably better than Facundo. So it's just too early to tell how this will turn out.

He did beat Edmund Ruth a couple years ago when he was a redshirt. Maybe Ruth wasn't the starter, but it was a quality win for a redshirt freshman. Edsell is 21-5 now, I believe (without checking) including his redshirt freshman sesson. We're agreeing - I don't mean to act like we're not - I'm just saying he hasn't given them a reason to pull Facundo's shirt.

I don't see Edmond Ruth as a measuring stick for a PSU starter, and haven't since Nijenhuis mauled him at states after cutting weight to avoid another Starocci beatdown.

But yes, Edsell has made a case to keep making his case.

Assuming Facundo goes to the Scuffle, he'll likely get a crack at one of Wittlake or Griffith there (think Stanford/Oklahoma State always goes) ... think he needs a win like that to convince Cael he's ready. No use in burning his shirt if he's going to go 1-2 at Nationals.

Respectfully disagree on this point. I think beating one of those two in just his second appearance wrestling this season is a pretty high bar to set. The team race will be incredibly close. If Facundo wants to wrestle and Cael thinks he will score even one more point than Edsell at NCAAs, then the shirt is pulled. Just my two cents.

There is an in-between position -- if he does well at the Scuffle but does not beat either of the top 3 (also including O'Toole).

Scuffle 165 looks like a very tough field: 3 O'Toole (Missouri), 4 Griffith (Stanford), 5 Wittlake (OKST), 13 Weber (ND State), 15 Hall (WVU), 16 Bullard (NC State), 17 Ramirez (Cornell), 18 Cook (SD State), 28 Formato (App State), 29 Nicholson (UTC), 31 Ogunsanya (Columbia)

Placing top 4-5 there would show very good progress. Conversely failing to place at the Scuffle means he's not yet ready to beat NCAA Round 2 caliber guys.

I agree with this. I think the "plan" all along was to allow Facundo to show he was ready to score at NCAAs. The performance you mention would be a step toward indicating that. I think Edsell has been really solid and everyone should be proud of the kid, but when it comes to scoring at NCAAs, I think Facundo might be the better gamble.

Well, if Facundo is ready to rock and roll by March and Hildebrandt is rolling, 21Guns says 9 scoring wrestlers and we are set.
