Pros and Cons after the Auburn game

Obviously a LOT more Pros after a very impressive performance, but here's what I got:
Pros:
1. The Offensive Line - Definite, solid improvement in an outstanding performance. Even when Singleton wasn't using his speed to break off big runs, this line was making holes. On Clifford's run TD, massive hole. For several Kaytron Allen runs, massive holes. And this was against some really good D Linemen on Auburn.
2. Nick Singleton - What can you say? Kid's speed is off the charts. Burst we haven't had in years. Makes the whole offense much harder to defend.
3. Abdul Carter - Led the team in tackles, had a sack and forced a fumble. Explosive tackler. Kid is the next great LB in a long line.
4. PJ Mustipher - I think he was outstanding and answered any remaining questions about coming off major surgery.
5. Chop Robinson - Guy was constantly in the backfield disrupting plays. He may not quite be AK, but another massive score for Franklin and staff out of the portal.
6. Brenton Strange - Really great game and blocking improving.
7. Clifford - Appeared to have a little more poise under pressure, less happy feet. Fantastic game.
8. J Pinegar - Rebounded from a bad game last week. 48-yard FG was impressive. Hopefully, he gets in a groove.
Cons:
1. The RT issue is not resolved. Wallace is a very good run blocker but he got beat again by a speed rusher and had a blatant holding penalty. Might have had other holding, too, I think. Is Effner the answer? Maybe. Is there any chance Drew Shelton can get a shot at significant reps? Don't know.
2. D Hardy - He can get exposed in coverage. Often gets beat and is scrambling to catch up. The good news is we have tons of outstanding depth in the secondary.
3. Franklin with another moronic game decision going for it on our side of the field on the very first drive, essentially spotting the other team 3 points. It made no difference in the game, but that doesn't excuse the stupid choice. I'm a huge Franklin fan and I was very happy he got the extension, however, his in-game coaching choices remain an opportunity for growth.

All in all, ecstatic after this game! An amazing performance against a solid SEC team in a tough environment. Of course it's CMU, CMU, CMU, for the team, but as a fan it's starting to get exciting thinking of a top 10 matchup with scUM in October!

Funny story with Pitt as the target

First a disclaimer: I am not posting this to trash Pitt. I respect the school. My daughter, son-in-law and a nephew graduated from Pitt and all are having solid careers.

On Saturday September 3, my daughter and my two sons (both PSU grads) were showing the Pitt campus to two of my daughter's sons, ages 9 and 6. As they approached the Cathedral of Learning, one son asks his 2 year son if he has to pee. The grandson is recently potty trained and will often go outside when playing. My grandson quickly runs to the side of the Cathedral, drops his draws and lets it fly on the building.

I believe that was his way of saying, "We Are....".

I wish that I had been there to see it happen.

Warren says Big Ten will go to 20...

Brett McMurphy tweets...

This following the specific language in the Big Ten's new media deal about adding more schools....smoke smoke smoke...probably fire coming...

The ACC is locked down with their Grant of Rights through 2036, so it sure seems like the Pac-12 Pacific Four would be the candidates. Oregon/Washington/Cal/Stanford (unless ND wants in...then bye-bye Cal-Berkley).

I'm thinking a 1-2-6 scheduling model would be best for such a large conference. (They could go to 10 games in conference easily...but the big schools would need extra compensation to give up home game revenue against a cream puff...)

1--1 protected rival each season.
2--4 schools that you play twice in four years (home and away).
6--schools drawn from pool of remaining 14 teams, singly scheduled (ala NFL scheduling) but spread out over many years to include home-away rotation (*the only reason for home-away is for non-con scheduling...where you agree to give the other team a marquee home game in exchange for one)

MSU would be our protected rival, for better or worse. (Would you rather have Maryland or Rutgers?)

Sample PSU schedule

Year 1

OSU

RBY vs Spencer Lee

I guess it was inevitable that the AJ Ferrari thread mentioned HR and their supposition around the potential for a Spencer Lee v RBY matchup. Presumably at 133. I didn’t sort thru HR to see the detail.

But to my uneducated view, it wouldn’t t be crazy for Lee to come back a bit bigger after a year off. He is already a very powerful 125. I am sure he would think he could win at either weight. Not sure he would “risk” being a legendary 4-timer unnecessarily, but the idea is interesting to me.

I for one would love it. Worth price of admission and then some to see them match up.

Any educated predictions or analyses of that matchup?

B1G rumored to be looking at 6 more schools

According to a new report from CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd the conference may be heading back to the Pac-12 well.

Dodd mentioned four west coast schools, and a pair of Florida schools in his latest report. Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren shut down the rumors at media day.

Personally I think 2 is enough on the West Coast. FSU is more desirable and Miami is just OK.

B1G Expansion

At this point I think Oregon and Washington are inevitable and will be good adds. I am hoping if Clemson+ do go to the SEC, that Virginia ultimately chooses B1G. Hoping the next four for B1G are Oregon, Washington, Notre Dame, and Virginia. Might have to add Stanford to get Notre Dame and I guess that would be okay, hard to argue against Stanford's all around sports success and San Francisco and Oakland TV markets but those are pro towns.

I think the B1G and SEC will go to 24 each, each four divisions with six teams. The four division winners make a conference playoff along with two wild cards and then the two conference champions play each other. An NFL type model. The B1G is the North and West, the SEC the South.

21-24 for the B1G. Colorado seems very likely. North Carolina if they don't go SEC. Arizona (Phoenix) and Utah (Salt Lake City) possible for land bridges to California. Oklahoma State maybe, gives you some Texas exposure. Boston College (Boston), maybe.

CFB players demand revenue sharing from B1G

....and look to become even closer to a professional minor league, which fewer and fewer people will care about, because, well, no one cares about the minors. On top of the NCAA announcing unlimited free agency...err, I mean transfers, my only question is how long CFB lasts as a major cultural center.

OT Some interesting thoughts from Real Estate Investors Conference

This was a real estate investors conference where nationally known people came to sell their wares. Many very experienced and knowledgeable people were there as well as newbies. However, 85% of the courses offered would probably not help most people because they wouldn't be able to execute what they were instructed.

1. One of the vendors had a girl friend who was a realtor. She is telling him that hedge funds are buying real estate willy nilly, not having any real idea of what they are buying. Also, they are only seeking returns in the 5% range which doesn't give them much room for error. Lots of room here for a big, negative explosion.

2. At a meeting for very experienced investors, many people thought that the reason there hasn't been greater rise in interest rates was that the velocity of money was low.

3. At the same investors meeting virtually all thought that substantial inflation was baked into the system and that it was foolish not to get loans at low rates and leverage your investments.

Myself, I think there is a substantial chance of a harmful rise in interest rates in the next 18 months which could implode the real estate market. I have a decent amount of cash available if that were to happen.

FC: ESPN takes on Penn State once again

For those who were wondering what the reported ESPN storyline (long storyline) would be a while back, here it is on the 10th anniversary of the Sandusky scandal from ESPN.
EDIT: for those who are already upset, or not wanting to view/dignify ESPN (I understand), clique at your own risk. It’s not flattering and quite lengthy
