OT: obscure movie gems (or not)...

Here are some movies in my MP4 NAS collection that struck me as unique and necessary, even though they aren't award winners. Would like to hear your recommendations to add to my collection:

Looker (Albert Finney, James Coburn, Susan Dey) - digital theft of beauty, murders included.

Ticket to Heaven (Nick Mancuso, Kim Cattrall, Saul Rubinek, Meg Foster) - young man gets sucked into a cult.

The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper (Treat Williams, Robert Duvall, Kathryn Harrold, Paul Gleason) - great movie in terminal legal dispute. Had to buy a VHS version to rip to MP4.

Deep in the Valley (Chris Pratt, Denise Richards) - OK, this is purely a guy flick, and alcohol enhances the effect...

Absence of Malice
(Paul Newman, Sally Field) - OK, not so obscure, but the scene near the end with Wilford Brinley is classic.

Gorky Park (William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy) - murders in Moscow.

Posse (Kirk Douglas, Bruce Dern) -- ah, the thin line between the good guys and the bad guys.

The Beguiled (Clint Eastwood) -- injured deserter takes advantage of hospitality during the Civil War.

Hanna (Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana) - teen death machine.

A Boy and His Dog (Don Johnson, Jason Robards) - one of the strangest movies I ever saw -- at PSU in the Forum on a Saturday night.

McQuery ever asked about "PSU Cover Up"?

After reading the junk spewed by Herbstreith and Desmond, I was wondering...

Now that the lawsuits have been settled, has anyone had an interview with Mike McQ about his opinion on Joe, a cover-up (?), and how PSU handled JS during 2001 and beyond? I'd love to have him vindicate the program (and I'm assuming that McQ would back the assertion that Joe took it up the chain and never had any intention of hiding or covering for anyone)... and also calling out the specific PSU and Second Mile personnel who "should have done more"...

I'd like to see something done... the negativity and filth still being spread by the MSM about PSU's role in the JS scandal is downright depressing...

If you guys don't get in the CFP system must be abandoned by BIG10

If the BIG10 Champion doesn't get in the CFP but a team it beat in the regular season does, then this thing needs to be burned down and reworked before next year. It would laughable to hear anyone make a logical case for Ohio State getting in, but the BIG10 Champ, who beat Ohio State during the regular season, does not. Let that sink in for a moment.

I think its Jim Delany's job now to make sure this does not happen. If he stands by and allow it to happen the way the TV talking heads want it to be... it will be one of the great all-time travesties in college sports.

This Hawkeye sez GO LIONS - GO PSU!

NCAA Wanted Alabama and Winner of OSU-Mich in Championship Game

from the beginning of the season. Apparently, they stopped just short of rationalizing a Michigan team in the playoffs as well as OSU but they sure as hell tried damn hard.

All that can be said is that, at best, they have a broken system. One could probably argue that there is a very corrupt system in place. Leaving PSU out of mix - I don't know if it's a spill over from Sandusky situation or just the love fest with those other teams.

In reality - as much as I love this PSU team, I don't think we'd match up well against Alabama. I'm very confident that we could beat the other 3 teams in the playoff as well as a rematch with Michigan. In all actuality, the Rose Bowl with a rematch against a good, but beatable USC team is probably better in the long run but to have the opportunity to go to playoffs denied due to politics and/or corruption is unthinkable. Then, you throw that piece of shit Delaney and the Big assholes into the fray and it's sickening.

Unfortunately, but hopefully, at the expense of yet another PSU team - steps will be taken to improve the system and process so another conference champion does not get denied a place in playoffs.

I only wish Bama drew OSU first so they could demolish them and keep them out of championship game. Although, the way OSU has been playing, there's a good chance they won't make it anyhow. They are not playing the best football in the conference and, actually, not even playing that well. They are too one dimensional on offense.

Cory Clark Injury???

d@mn shame if this proves out. Hate to see injuries, worse to see to hard nosed competitors like Clark fall victim. FWIW if Cortez couldnt win it, CC was my guy. Not much of a fan of zane richards, other than his parents choice to name him Zane (even if spelled funny #just joking).

It says on the Lair that we are in full-blown psycho mode about

them getting Malik Zaire. Is that true? I can't find the thread that would suggest that.

Frankly, I don't think we've been in full-blown psycho mode since the day of Lubert's coronation. Although, when O'Brien left, I guess that day we might have been. Some might say we were in full-blown psycho mode the night we beat tOSU, but with so many of us at the game, it was somewhat muted.

Some dude over there says that if they get Zaire, then they will be ranked in the top 15 going into next season. I didn't realize he was that good, particularly since he didn't play much this past year. Perhaps he was a secret weapon waiting to be unleashed.

Way OT: Australian schoolboys synthesize the active ingredient in Daraprim.....

The man who sparked outrage last year by hiking the price of a life-saving drug may have met his match in some Australian schoolboys.

US executive Martin Shkreli became a symbol of greed when he raised the price of a tablet of Daraprim from $13.50 (£11) to $750.

Now, Sydney school students have recreated the drug's key ingredient for just $20.

Daraprim is an anti-parasitic drug used by malaria and Aids patients.

"ESPN Loses Over a Half Million Subscribers"

ESPN Loses Over a Half Million Subscribers

The Associated Press

The Nielsen estimates revealed that ESPN lost 555,000 subscribers during the last month.

In other words, ESPN essentially lost the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This, coming on the heels of last month, the worst month in ESPN history, where the network lost 621,000 subscribers.

In the last two months, ESPN has lost 1,176,000 subscribers, a subscriber loss nearly the size of the city of Dallas, Texas. ESPN currently has just over 88 million domestic subscribers. In 2013, a mere three years ago, ESPN had 99 million subscribers.

That’s right, in the last three years, ESPN lost somewhere in the neighborhood of ten million subscribers, the rough equivalent of the combined populations of New York City and Phoenix.

Now, in fairness, ESPN has contested the subscriber estimates that Nielsen put forth, citing the omission of multiple factors, including streaming services and digital device numbers.

However, if the Nielsen numbers even remotely approximate the true subscriber loss, it means ESPN has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue over the last three years alone and if the trend continues, is well on its way to collapse.

Certainly, the chord cutting phenomenon that has hit networks across cable television has a definite impact on ESPN. Though, that’s not the entire explanation for the network’s cratering subscriber base. ESPN Ombudsman Jim Brady, admitted that the network lurched way too far to the left in recent years, alienating many viewers.

There’s also evidence of that in these numbers. According to Deadline Hollywood, “Disney’s other sports channels fared better. ESPNU had 71 million subs, down 1.4%. ESPNEWS and SEC Network — not measured by Nielsen — were flat based on December data from SNL Kagan. The former had 70 million subs and the latter had 62 million.”

What do ESPNU, ESPNEWS, and the SEC Network all have in common? They are, by far, the least opinion-driven and ideological of all the ESPN channels.

ESPN’s slate of uber-opinionated, radically leftist programs such as Around the Horn, First Take, Pardon the Interruption, His & Hers, and others all appear on ESPN or ESPN2, the channels which have seen the greatest decline.

ESPNU, ESPNEWS, and the SEC Network primarily feature sporting events, simulcast radio shows, or straight news reporting with very little opinion, or, at least very little political opinion. Those channels have either marginally declined or stayed flat.

Something tells me there’s a message there.

OT: For "critical thinkers", why NFL viewership is down

first of all, this thread is solely intended for critical thinkers. if you do not have a critical thinking club card, you cannot read this thread. I am teaching you critical thinking skills because there are too many people today who will cherry pick data to support their confirmation bias. I do not do that.

I have a degree in engineering from Penn State, which means I am much much much much smarter than people who do not. that's a scientific fact I learned freshman year, you dum dums!!

So on to our critical thinking exercise to address why I believe that a man silently kneeling on the sideline has offended so many good and true patriots of the greatest nation on earth!!! and I am talking about USA USA USA! you thought I meant Russia since they won an election this year. FOOLS!!!

After reading several different articles on the subject from the biased liberal media, I can only conclude (logically of course) that they are covering up the "Kaepernick effect" . . . because most of them cite reasons like the recent national election, the Cubs world series run, peak saturation of TV markets, rapidly evolving alternative markets, a lack of iconic players, reduction on the quality of play (especially in larger markets), and a host of more reasonable explanations for this down tick in viewership.

My superior critical thinking skills can only lead me to believe that these sensible and reasonable explanations MUST BE WRONG since they do not conform with my pre-conceived world view and outrage!!

Now I will post 17 links and obnoxious graphs from dubious sources to support my arguments. thus endeth the lesson!!

Branding nonsense for Final 4

Watched the Fox special on the college playoff and two of the issues that really resonated with me was the notion of the BEST 4 teams versus the MOST DESERVING 4 teams and the notion of "branding" associated with the final 4. Clearly the discussions about BEST 4 teams had a strong Michigan slant. Most thought however that MOST DESERVING 4 teams should carry the day.

I actually thought that PSU gets a big push from branding given the fan base and the "story" of the PSU resurgence this year. If our Nits win the BIG, we are deserving and an argument could be made that our branding carries big weight. The PSU story sounds like it would be the central story of the playoffs.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that everyone was looking for an excuse to remove Washington given their lack of branding and their weakness in strength of schedule. If PSU smokes Wisc and Washington struggles in their game, could any scenario be made to jump BIG winner over Washington?

They went through a lot of scenarios and included the chaos scenario where both Clemson and Washington lose. There was some thought that OSU, Mich, and BIG winner could join Bama under the chaos scenario. There was also some debate that if PSU wins and Washington loses, could Mich be the 4th team with PSU looking in. The thought process was that UM beat BOTH the BIG title teams and that they are one of the 4 BEST teams and have great branding to boost interest.

If chalk holds, the final 4 will be Bama, OSU, Wash, and Clemson. If either Wash or Clemson loses, the 4th team sounds like it will be a BIG team. If chaos takes place, BIG could place 3 teams. It sounds like they did not support OK getting in under any scenario, same with OK St and Colorado.

The other interesting thing is that the final vote for NC was 5 votes Bama and 4 votes Clemson. So vote had Clemson beating OSU and it was pretty strong view that Clemson would beat OSU. The panel thought that they desperately want Saban v. Urban match up which I don't really understand. Who really cares if these guys coach against each other. They might not get it so curious if OSU gets dinged and pushed to 4 to ensure the Saban/Urban face off takes place even if in a semi game. This would then reward Wash and Clemson as 1 loss teams but with a conf championship to their credit.
