PIAA...Unreal

Just found out this is true. A female athlete from the state of Maryland plays in the state playoffs on Thursday nite. Her team loses. On Friday she transfers into Neumann Goretti and scores 16 pts in a state semi-final game for N-G last nite...my beef is if she had transferred into the school N-G beat, the PIAA would have ruled her ineligible because it was for athletic purposes...awful.

FC/OT: Delete Facebook?

Without getting into more recent specific privacy-related incidents, is this a realistic option for you? I stopped using regularly some time ago and really only keep it to share photos of kids with some friends and family. The novelty of seeing everything everyone does all the time, or connecting with friends you no longer have anything in common with, has long worn off and anymore I just don't care. If not for family and a few friends, I would completely delete my profile. I already removed it from my mobile devices and only access it from my desktop. I hate that they own Instagram, which is the one social media platform I find worthwhile. Anyone else with Facebook/social media fatigue?

I get that the recent movement is tied to politics and stuff, and not getting into that, but I noticed the founder of WhatsApp (whose company was bought by FB for $19bn!) just shared this....

Drinking and driving....

...I am posting this for no other reason than it's cathartic to me to get this off my chest.

An acquaintance (not really a friend, just a guy I would see at my local watering hole from time to time), was arrested last week and charged with two counts of homicide. In January, he left the bar after "a couple of beers" and drove his high end German sedan home - at a high rate of speed. For those familiar with New Jersey, we have jughandles - aka, stay right to turn left.

He tried to make the turn at the jughandle, lost control, jumped the curb, and smashed into a minivan, pushing the van and it's occupants into a small waterbody. The two people in the van drowned.

He was physically fine, although shaken up. Subsequent investigations indicated his "couple of beers" were actually eight beers, based on interviews with the bar. Police estimate that he was going over 90 MPH - all while trying to navigate a turn.

His toxicology reports came back last week, and based on that, he was arrested and charged with homicide, and a couple of other offenses.

His wife, a doctor, has filed for divorce. And she is pregnant with their first child. His company fired him (he was in IT). His parents/family don't have the means to help him out. So, he has nothing. He is in jail, and based on what some local police told me, it does not look like he will be able to afford a high priced lawyer, and will have to settle for a public defender. He has told the police he wants to end his life rather than spend time in jail.

He is 29 years old.

He has ruined two families, and possibly more extended families, by his irresponsible, now considered criminal, act. And he may spend the better part of the next 20 years in jail.

I don't understand people nowadays, with all we know about drinking and driving, why people still do it. One Uber call and the couple in the minivan would be around today, and he would still be a husband, soon to be father.

I just don't get it.

The Big Lebowski

I’m watching it tonight for the umpteenth time and I really think that this movie is fantastic on so many levels. It holds up over time and seems to get even better as time passes and the more times I watch it. There are so many great characters, superbly written lines, and the story is just well told.

I’m sure that there are some other fans of the movie out there... what are your favorite scenes?

Top 5 Cael-era moments (so far)

1. This season's Ohio State dual. The single best dual meet I have seen in over 45 years. Nolf being out helps here. If he had wrestled, there would have been a lot less drama.

2. The Funtastic Five's finals run last year at Nationals.

3. The undefeated last round of B1Gs in 2011. Every win was needed to come from behind to beat Iowa for the title. The watershed moment for Penn State wrestling, imo.

4. Last night's round. To come from down to 10+ points up was staggering.

5. The Friday night session at Nationals in 2011. Basically iced the first NCAA title in a long time.

Lots of work to do today but I think the young men are up to it. Let's bring home #7!

Who else feels sorry for Heather Lyke?

On a scale of 1 to 10, her level of regret for taking the Pitt AD job has to be about 22. Good news for her though is that a great opportunity for a lateral move just became available as Northwest Rhode Island Community College AD position was just posted on LinkedIn as NWRICC just elevated their athletic department by adding bowling to their badminton team to double their intercollegiate sports portfolio.

2017 NCAAs Session 6 Thread

Wrestling starts at 8 pm EDT.

TV - ESPN

Video Stream - ESPN3

Audio Stream - Byers will be streamed for free at this link:

http://www.gopsusports.com/collegesportslive/?media=550917

GoPSUnow indicates that the audio stream will start at 7:40 pm EDT

These are the championship bouts. Only one mat will be set up at the arena. They are starting at 197, and will finish with 184. As such, no PSUers will be wrestling in the first 5 matches, and then there will be a PSUer wrestling in each of the last 5 matches.

PSU has locked up the team championship before the start of the finals. If I recall correctly, they have in past years ended ESPN coverage during the team celebration after the trophy is awarded, but it has been shown on the video stream, or on another ESPN channel.

As in each of the previous Sessions, please keep all comments about the matches, PSU wrestlers, non-PSU wrestlers, TV coverage, Byers' comments, etc. in this thread.

PSUers will be favored in some of their bouts, and will be underdogs in others. Win or lose, let's keep in mind that we won the team trophy, and the respective PSU wrestler came in either 1st or 2nd. In short, let's have some fun tonight.

Lastly, as has been the custom in past years, I will not do PBP in the Championship matches. While I'm likely to post during the finals, I want to sit back and enjoy the matches, and not be struggling to key in what is taking place on the mat.

2018 NCAAs -- Session 4 Thread

I'm setting this up in advance, but will be providing PBP during the Session.

please use this thread to discuss the matches of PSU wrestlers, matches of interest by other wrestlers, etc. If responding to a post, please use the Quote function. I'll post Mat assignments as I find them, but others are welcome to post that as well. I'll provide PBP as best as I can (I expect to be good for all matches, unless two PSU wrestlers are wrestling at the same time).

They'll reduce the mats by 2, thus only using 6 mats. Consolation R4 matches will take place on Mats 1, 2, 5, and 6, while the Semi-finals will take place on Mats 3 and 4. After Consy R2 & the Semis are completed, they'll conduct Consolation R5 bouts on all 6 mats.

Time:
8 pm EDT

TV:
ESPN

Video Streams:
All mats will be streamed on ESPN3. if you want to watch the PSU wrestlers in Consolation R4 matches, this is your best bet, as ESPN usually focuses on the Championship bracket matches, unless there is a lag before the next weight class is started.

Audio Stream:
Byers's radio PBP will be streamed for free, starting at 7:40 pm, at the below link:

http://www.gopsusports.com/collegesportslive/?media=573246

Following Mat Assignments:
They are provided on TrackWrestling via the Dashboard, on FloArena, on the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site, and on the Penn State Wrestling Twitter account. Just open a bunch of windows, and you'll find where the next match involving a PSU wrestler will take place

Following Team Scores:
They are provided on the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site, on TrackWrestling, and scroll periodically atop the ESPN TV coverage

Mat Assignments Already Determined:

- Nick Lee's R4 Consolation will be the 3rd match on Mat 1
- Zain's Semi-Final will be the 4th match on Mat 3
- Nolf's Semi-Final will be the 5th match on Mat 4

Mat Assignments:
Myself and others will post them as we know them. You can get them from multiple sources. TrackWrestling's Dashboard is a good source.

Team Score:
that can be followed on Track, or on the Penn State Wrestling Club web site

On a personal level, I expect to be able to provide PBP for Sessions 1, 2, 3, and 4. I'll miss Session 5. Lastly, while I'll create a Session 6 Thread, by tradition I don't provide PBP during the finals.

I believe Tim Owen is at the Q, and he should be posting his observations during the Sessions.

We Are ...

- ready to watch the Nittany Lions
- looking forward to observing PSU wrestlers get bonus points whenever possible
- wish the seniors well, as they wear the PSU singlet for the last time at NCAAs
- curious to see how active Nolf is in R1
- chuckling that Rasheed has decided to wear a hair net
- so ready to see 3 days of elite wrestling
- expect the team title race to be quite a battle
- hopeful that PSU's true freshman, Nick Lee, handles his first NCAA tourney like a veteran
- so happy Nationals are about to start

OT: Questions for hunters and farmers...

If you are a hunter, would you like to make your own decision about whether or not it's appropriate to hunt on Sunday in PA (as long as it was within legal season)?

If you are a farmer, are you categorically opposed to the thought of hunting on Sunday, or would you be OK with certain limited hunting on Sunday on private land (where the land owner gave permission)? Would increased penalties for trespassing make you more willing to accept hunting on Sunday?

Obviously, I can't limit the responses to just hunters or farmers, so if you respond, can you please indicate whether you are a FH (farmer/hunter), FNH (farmer/non-hunter), NFH (non-farmer/hunter), or NFNH (non-farmer/non-hunter). If you don't indicate otherwise, I will assume that you are a NFNH. Also, if you don't live in PA, please indicate that in your response as well.
