I’m at PSU this weekend for the Keystone State hockey games . . . .

with my brother and nephew as part of the West delegation, and the campus is very alive with student tours and the big recruiting weekend. I visited the All Sports Museum today, which is a treasure, and got to go on field level; Beaver Stadium on the inside on a beautiful day like today is a wonderful site.

The tour guide told us that when the west side renovations are finished, the seating capacity will be reduced by 6000.

Also, I’d be surprised if we don’t get some commitments soon after a beautiful weekend up here like this weekend.

OT: Do new car GPSs coordinate with other audio?

Here's what I mean. If you have your GPS going through your phone and you're driving somewhere and the GPS says to you "Make a right in one-half mile" and you have your radio going or other noise from your car infotainment system, then you may not hear the GPS instructions. What would be optimal would be to have the GPS going through your car and then have your car automatically mute other noise, radio or whatever, when it is about to give GPS instructions to make sure you hear the directions.

What do you think?

Escalators in the Beav

I am old and I admit stopping along the way on my trip to the top of the stadium to catch my breath, but escalators in the Beav? I'd love it, but does it make economic sense for seven days a year? Heavily used escalators in places like airports seem to break down fairly often, so can we be sure these escalators will even be operational all of those seven days? Restrooms? Not sure we need elaborate decor in existing restrooms, we just need more of them. What other aspects of the remodel budget are "nice to haves" but not truly necessary? My point is PSU needs to take a hard look at some of the expenditures in the Beav remodel. A number of these "nice to haves" should be reevaluated to see if the $700M price tag can be sliced somewhat. For example, what is the ROI on the luxury boxes? How many more can the PSU fandom support? Same with more "premium" seating. Kraft says all the figures have been closely examined but has anything been released to the public? I've been going to the Beav since 1966 and I'd love some improvements, but they need to be fiscally prudent.

FB Recruiting Lasch Bash Recruit Visitor List

Here is a running list of which high school football recruits will be on campus for Lasch Bash weekend (July 26th - 27th). Expect a large majority of the 2025 commits to also make their way to campus, but this event is mostly for the younger kids in future classes. Also it should be noted that this event held annually at the end of July will no longer be possible in the future, as the recruiting calendar will change to a full dead period throughout all of July next year.

Since Gable stepped down as head coach for the Hawks, the Iowa fans have more than their fair share of disappointments over the years. Who do you think turned out to be their biggest disappointment during this time? Note - I included Gilman and Metcalf primarily because they chose to leave for better opportunities.

Remember how far these '5 star' PA recruits can fall..

Now at a crap program, out of position with little hope of getting on field. No offense to kid but 5 star is not a sure thing.

118 at NCAAs - 1984-1993

I was looking over NCAA champs in history and was struck by the fact that from 1984 to 1993, inclusive, Pennsylvania college wrestlers won 8 titles between 4 different wrestlers. Penn State got 3 of them - DeStefanis in 1984 and Prescott in 1991 and 1992. Three for Bloomsburg (Ricky Bonomo) and two for East Stroudsburg (Cuvo). Pretty remarkable.

Penn State AD Pat Kraft on Big Ten expansion, private equity in college sports and more

Click here for the interview of Pat Kraft.
It is a rather interesting interview with lots of information. Two positive things I took from this is that PSU has zero interest (thankfully) in getting in bed with private equity vultures and that Kraft is truly dedicated to the entire athletic dept (vs just football), as he should be. The one negative take away was that they have talked about the PSU NIL brand academy for two years and are still setting it up, which I think is way too long.
