2017 Recruiting Class Thread

Class of 2017 official visitors

WR Mark Webb - Warminster, Pa., Archbishop Wood

The lowdown: A four-star, Webb has been committed to Georgia for a long time, and if there's anything in recruiting that usually rings true, it's that longtime verbals to one school who visit another this later in the process are serious about potentially flipping. Webb is now a must-watch prospect in the buildup to signing day.

LB Ellis Brooks - Richmond, Va., Benedictine

The lowdown: Some recruits might scoff at the idea of visiting a school that waited until about a week and a half before signing day to offer, but Brooks is not in that group. The senior was offered by the Lions last Sunday and declared a day or two later that he would see University Park this weekend. PSU is a major player here along with Maryland. LSU and Northwestern are also lurking.

TE Peyton Hendershot - Lizton, Ind., Tri-West

The lowdown: Hendershot does not have an offer from the Lions, but that could change this weekend; it seems to be a question of whether or not the Lions will have the space to take him, and how that question is answered is quite honestly not clear. But Hendershot, who stands 6-foot-4, 230-pounds, will visit anyway with hopes of checking out campus, talking more with the staff, and ultimately leaving with an offer. The Lions currently do not have a tight end commit in this cycle.

Note: At this point in time, Henry Ruggs III has not confirmed his travel/no travel plans for the weekend, so we'll leave the four-star receiver from Alabama off the list for now.

I think they land Brooks and Hendershot if they offer him. After reading comments that Webb's father made I think Webb may want to go to PSU but his dad is pushing Georgia and to tag along with Swift.

Brooks said in an interview with Scout that Michael Robinson is a "good family friend" and that Robinson and his father are "very close".

Can't hurt.

MRob is very big in the community down here. He does a HUGE free football camp every year that attracts a lot of kids and I want to say that they both (Brooks and MRob) went to the same HS

Also, saw some pics floating around with him and LaVar. Maybe at a camp or something. That can't hurt either.

Robinson went to Varina. Brooks goes to Benedictine.

In the same interview, Brooks said he and his family went to a number of Penn State games when he was a kid to see Robinson play.

Also, FWIW, some Maryland insiders with good track records on their SBnation blog seem to suggest that Castro-Fields is back to being a coin flip between PSU and Maryland. Alabama's out of the running, but Maryland's in home with him is what caused the pushback of his commitment.

RB Anthony McFarland just committed to Maryland. There's been some speculation linking Castro-Fields and McFarland. Hoping that CJF can land TCF.

That's interesting... They have 29 recruits so far in this class and are apparently looking for more. I looked at the roster on their website and they only have 19 seniors. Wonder how they are making that much room.

Mike Farrell giving us some love this morning. In an article calling out the classes that have exceeded and missed expectations, he has us #2 behind only OK.

Not to hijack the thread, but Mike Farrell is a gigantic horse's a$$, and that is saying something for those in the "recruiting business." He's the guy who all just hammered away at one of PSU's commits last year about flipping to MeCheatAgain.

Don't know any details, but they might have been way under 85 with the coaching issues

They were under 85 and a bunch of their 2017 kids are early enrollees that can be backcounted to 2016. And I think there have been a number of "departures" since Durkin took over.

The McFarland commit today hurts our chances with Castro-Fields, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised at all if McFarland's sudden heel turn towards Maryland and Castro-Fields' sudden postponement when all signs pointed our way were connected to each other.

I've made no secret that I believe we should be putting a hurting on every team we play because of different perceptions that we face, but it would behoove us to put an extra whooping on UMD next year. 8/9 four stars in one class is impressive, but it will not by itself turn their program around but it certainly is a start. Best to nip that in the bud.

The movement may be significant but it will be loose, wet and washed away by 50,000 more fans every week, just a bit to the North. :D

So, am I missing anyone realistically?

Left still on the board are:

1. WR Henry Ruggs
2. CB Tariq Castro Fields
3. LB Ellis Brooks
4. DT Elijah Conliffe
5. DE Joshua Pachal
6. WR Mark Webb

I do realize that with some kids we do have a better chance than others but this is just about who we are pursuing.

Thank you!

Did I forget one?

PSU possibly advising this young man to wait and see how things shake out; then maybe a possible offer?

Romello Martin out of Brooklyn, N.Y. will make a post signing day decision. There are two schools who have jumped out in front for his signature. Find out the latest with the 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle.
Last Thursday at 9:44 AM
Penn State remains in the mix for the top defensive tackle in New York for the Class of 2017. But don't expect a decision anytime soon.

Did he decommitt from Rutgers? Why is he possibly waiting until after NSD? Anyone?
