I'm setting this up in advance. And for the first time in the tourney, I won't be around to provide PBP. Months ago, without checking my calendar, I mistakenly committed to something tomorrow during the day, so I'll miss all of Session 5.

Please use this thread to discuss matches that take place in Session 5, PSU or otherwise. If responding to other posts, please use the Quote function.

They'll start out with the Consolation Semis, and when they are completed they'll go to the 3rd place, 5th place, and 7th place matches.

Time:
11 am EDT

TV:
ESPNU

Video Stream:
ESPN3 will stream all the mats

Audio Stream:
Byers's radio PBP will be streamed for free, starting at 10:40 am EDT, at:

http://www.gopsusports.com/collegesportslive/?media=573247

Finding Mat Assignments:
They can be found on TrackWrestling (open the NCAA tournament, and select the Dashboard), FloArena, Penn State Wrestling Club's web site, or Penn State Wrestling's Twitter account

Consolation Semis (R6) Matches for PSU Wrestlers:
141: Lee vs. Jaydin Eierman (Missouri)

7th Place Matches for PSU Wrestlers:
197: Rasheed vs. William Miklus (Missouri)
285: Nevills vs. Youssif Hermida (Maryland)

I look forward to reading this thread when I get home.

So what do we need to win the team title? Anyone do the math yet? I’m guessing 3 wins in the finals to offset all the OSU wins in the cons rds.

A post I found interesting on a Ohio wrestling board from their point of view...

Bo destroys Smith and Moore takes down Rasheed. Now OSU with 8 top 6.

Huge morning tomorrow.

PSU definitely in the driver's seat, but OSU with an outside shot. PSU's big 5 all in the finals but IMar and Valenica with very legitimate chances to win, Myles not favored to beat Nickal but obviously can, and Hidlay with probably slightly more than a punchers chance against Nolf.

OSU down 11. If PSU wins 3 finals that's 23, Zane could get bonus, call it 25, and Lee and Nevills can pick up some as well. Need Eierman and Jack (who Mckenna needs to beat) to win. If Nevills takes 7th that's 26. Miklus needs to take out Rasheed. Snyder wins and that cuts it to 22 (though, I have to say, he looks a bit off to me and he'll need everything he's got to beat Coon). If all 6 in the consolation win (unlikely, but possible) deficit's down to 4. If 4 take third it's tied up. A bonus point or non-point can decide things. Of course, if Myles beats Nickal, plus IMar and Valencia wins that's an 8 point swing and suddenly the room for error on the back sides opens up.

Long story short, the chance is slim, but there's a chance.

Yes, thank you for the thoughtful input. Way beyond my ability to express. The consy rounds and medal rounds with their scoring sometimes escape me until I refresh myself and then a year goes by without thinking of them and I'm right back here reading your descriptive post. Kudos sir.

Some quick background on Nick Lee vs. Jaydin Eierman. They met in the 2016 UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals and Eierman won by fall. Eierman knocked off Yianni D early in the tournament, lost to Scott Parker of Lehigh, then beat Lee and Taylor Lamont before losing to Yianni D in the 3rd Place match. Lee lost to Mitchell McKee in the quarterfinal, beat Jose Rodriguez, lost to Eierman and then beat Joshua Terao to finish 7th.

I believe Eierman will be a tough match for him tomorrow, but look forward to seeing if he can exact a little revenge as he has done with before.

We can't get 23 points with 3 wins in the finals, only four placement points for each win plus bonus

Each Consi Semi-Finalist can score a max of 8.5 additional points

Each 7/8 Round can score a max o 3 additional points

Each Finalist can score a max of 6 additional points

Yes, but those max numbers include 2 bonus points per match; i.e., winning by pin or injury default. Just clarifying.

In Cael I trust.
We Are.

Why am I coaching this morning? Why are kids still wrestling folkstyle? Ugh.

Just getting up now and all I can say is wow, what a night yesterday. I’m excited, nervous, proud, etc. for today. Hoping a few more tOSU losses but expecting them to put on a show in this morning session.

thanks, dunk....Great picture!

I hadn't watched Z. Valencia much before the tournament, and he is certainly is formidable. But he does make mistakes, and Marky turns mistakes into points. I like Hall's chances.
I have a very healthy respect for Zahid (maybe even a little fear before last night). But what he brought against Amine isn't going to get it against Mark. I'm not discounting that Zahid may have a different gear as well. Should be a great match.

Same! I’m missing the whole morning session and now I’ll come back with tOSU leading and “the sky is falling” posts everywhere! Ugh!!! Atleast Jr High Wrestling has shorter periods...

I've under-appreciated Mark a little bit. I think because he's doing some genius shit that I'm not getting my head around in real-time. But admitting I have a problem is the first step. I'm going to start re-watching Mark in slo-mo.

I’m feeling that if we’re within 13 going into the finals we’ll be expected to pull it out.

I’m guessing they’ve already decided we’re ending @285, but if we’re down 13 after the morning it would be cool to have 184 last.

so in short....Bo has to beat Miles, that is pretty much the must have. Zain and Snyder cancel each other out although I think the Zain win was a lock before we saw UMBC last night and Coon has beaten Snyder before so like our chances in those two. So need a Nolf or Hall win, not counting on Joseph, to really seal the deal. And hope OSU doesn't got all Friday again with wins and bonus points.

Some projections, FWIW:

Nato is a pretty strong favorite to get 3rd. He is just better than the guys he needs to beat (Rivera, then winner of Cruz/Lizak). Hopefully he doesn't get any bonus.

I think McKenna beats Jack, but I give a slight edge to Eierman in the 3rd place match. No bonus points. Meanwhile, Nick Lee has had a nice run in the consolation bracket but now has to face the big boys. I think Lee loses to both Airman and Jack and gets 6th place.

Micah Jordan's luck continues as he draws Berger and avoids Pantaleo and Kemerer. Jordan will beat Berger but lose the 3rd place match. No bonus unless Berger does something stupid, which is possible.

Now come the tougher ones to project, and where PSU could get some help. These semifinals are huge swing matches in the team race:

Pletcher vs Brock is pretty much a toss up IMO. If Pletcher wins, he likely gets Wilson of NC State, who nearly beat Gross in the semi. If Pletcher loses, he likely gets Delvecchio, who he should beat. So Pletcher could bet anywhere from 5th to 3rd. Pretty much know for sure that he will not bonus.

Bo Jordan vs Amine is another close one, though I give a slight edge to Amine. I would also give a slight edge to Kutler or Lewis in the 5th place match. But these are all gonna be close and could go either way. Bonus is unlikely.

I like Darmstadt over Moore in yet another close match. Moore then beats the Conel/Holschlag (never heard of either one of these guys before this tourney) for 5th place. Bonus unlikely.

Edit - The tOSU guys will all be very motivated due to the team race implications. That can make a difference in the toss-up type matches.

They announced last night they are starting at 125 and ending with HWY. although, interesting to note, they didn’t specify the order there within those 2.

I get where you're coming from regarding Joseph. But recall that Joseph damn near beat IMar at B1Gs with a late TD; only some grab-the-ankles funk from IMar prevented it. So CJ is right there.

Has NaTo ever been pinned in his college career? I can’t think of a time...

I'd agree with these predictions for the most part.

If Pletcher beats Brock he handled Wilson without much trouble in the dual. Wilson has been on fire this tournament though so we'll see.

I wonder if ESPN will show all 3 mats on TV for the consi semis? I'd love to put the laptop away after 2 days straight lol
