2018 Recruiting Thread

I'll simply say our depth chart is something that would scare me off as a high profile QB wanting to play soon. Trace has two years to play and Tommy Stevens three, for starters

Tommy Stevens hasn't accomplished anything as far as the average college football fan is concerned. We PSU crazies know he kicked butt in the Blue/White game and had one great running play in actual competition. Guys like Stevens aren't scaring away blue-chip QB prospects.

Good heavens. And the rumors start. Moorhead has said he wants a QB to throw first and run second. Escapability is more important than running so that plays can be extended. He has also said his system is built for either a dual threat or pro-style QB. When he met with Hack, he told Hack that Hack would be fine in his system.

In cased you can't decode certain acronyms.... "JK" stands for just kidding.

I think JF will try to get Leary back on campus where he offers him. If he wouldn't make a visit, no use offering. And if he makes the visit as a committed recruit, we'll be able to flip him.
Agreed. I think the quickness - or lack thereof - of the staff in potentially offering Leary over the next month or so will tell us a whole lot about how they feel about the possibility of Fields coming back around. Leary's clearly at the top of the board if Fields is truly off of it.

Also, I really wouldn't be 100% surprised if Gordon decommits, as much as I'd like to keep him - he strikes me as a classic "quick commit after an awesome visit" type of situation. If he keeps coming back to campus, it's a good sign.

I think the staff really likes where they stand with Miner. I think he ends up as part of this class. Griffith has roots in B1G territory, but he hasn't been to State College in quite a while (if ever). If he comes to the Lasch Bash, it's anyone's game.

TIFWIW. A couple of tidbits for you gentlemen.

Leary in the process of setting up a summer visit to PSU. If offered he will commit - he has said as much to his HS coach in the past. NCST coaching staff getting very nervous.

Parsons trending back towards PSU as of this past weekend. Let's just say the visits went very well. Franklin doing a great job of selling the 'home state hero" storyline. Parsons has a huge ego, Franklin's psychology background coming out in full force here. Franklin taking a new route to earning his re-committment.

Trent Gordon is on decommit watch. He may have committed too quick in the wake of a great visit. Many think he may take a step back and open things up. If UT comes calling, he will likely jump at the offer.

Nana Asiedu mulling taking his official visits with family. Clemson still pushing hard, UTenn/Bama turning up the heat. Nothing to be concerned about until he decides to take a visit.

Lots of negative recruiting picking up against PSU in regards to losing Fields and the class not having the #1 QB prospect to pitch at recruits.
Also, FWIW, this poster has a pretty decent history of predicting PSU-related recruiting news. I'm not sure where he's getting this information, but it's shown to end up as pretty accurate in the past.

Leary and his team are scheduled to go to the NC St. team camp the end of June. It will be interesting to see how JF and Leary handle the timing on this.

48 TDs and 4 INTs/12-0 and NJ champs. Looks like he can make all of the throws. I wonder if any of his receivers are D1 recruits. They look pretty good too.
That TD to int ratio is huge. If you remember Hack did not have a very good one even in high school. So it's nice to see a prospect making 'all' the throws and not letting them end up with the other team

Trending towards hot and sunny. Today will transition. Tomorrow will be 88 and full sun. Slightly overcast now. This is on the western side of the state.

You would have to tweet this at her...unless you know she stalks the board. ;)

he is in a high school system that he doesn't run because they play 4 wide shotgun and just throw the ball. he is pretty good athletic, he can scramble. But his team does not RPO or any QB runs. He is a passer first with a A+ arm. His high school Timber Creek turns out FBS & FCS players on a yearly basis.

Arm is important but I doubt that PSU is offering if his mobility is limited. I don't think we'll see a Tom Brady/tall statue-type QB recruited by Franklin (or a lot of other top programs). Just no way to be effective if they don't have a wall in front of them. McSorley is a great demonstration of how effective a QB can be in college football with quickness, even if an OL is a work in progress.

I suspect his high school can run a pro style offense, but at camps he has demonstrated some good running/scrambling ability.

If you watch his film, you can clearly see he's not "immobile." He appears to have studied someone like Aaron Rodgers as his prototype. And, before someone jumps on me, I'm not comparing him to Aaron Rodgers.

I was thinking the same thing... maybe this is in anticipation of Moorhead leaving after this season? JK

PSU's offensive philosophy is Franklin's -- I doubt it will change when Moorhead leaves. Franklin learned from Fridge and Fridge was into mobile quarterbacks long before anybody heard of read option. Plus Franklin saw first hand what happens when you have an inexperienced OL in front of an immobile QB.

PSU may be recruiting people classified as pro-style but these are not 6-6 statues, they're smaller more mobile guys (at least I hope so).

It's a little premature to compare Leary to Rodgers, dontcha think?:D;)

a&l, this kid can throw the ball.
I know - big, accurate arm. I'm glad you took the time to look at his video. I was told by a friend and former PSU player who lives near that area that Leary's public high school, Timber Creek, recruits (my buddy said 'cheats').That might explain why he has such good receivers.

Don't get me wrong, mobility of a QB is important. In my opinion, it is about third or fourth on the list. First is, can he protect the ball and not turn it over? It's hard to play offense without the ball. Reading defenses and delivering with accuracy. Then arm strength and mobility. Can he make all the throws? Can he avoid the rush and turn a negative into a positive. The NFL is full of guys who can make throws and run but can't protect the ball.

I did a little reading up on Timber Creek Regional after watching his film. Lots of people in NJ would like to see them go down. Check out all of the stories on the investigation of their program.

Franklin ran RPO action under Hack.....Hack just never kept the ball.

Franklin did a ton of research to figure out what type of offense he wanted to run. Then he went out and found the guy who specialized in that type of offense. This is what our offense is going to look like no matter who the OC is.

Same thing with Urban Meyer. Kevin Wilson was brought in as OC, and he's learning Meyer's offense.

I don't dispute the talent we have, but the reality is that any team that has a serious shot at Fields is also going to have talented QBs ahead of Fields when he enrolls. I really don't think that is a factor, as much as playing somewhere closer to home so it's easier for his family to go to home games.

PSU looks pretty set with Trace having two years of eligibility left. I guess he could go to the NFL after 2017 season but at his height it's hard to picture him as a 1st day NFL pick, so why not stay for 2018. In any case Stevens would be tough to beat out.

Meanwhile, Auburn doesn't have a QB they're thrilled with. Florida has an uncertain situation. Ohio State will need a new starter in 2018. If Fields' goal is the NFL as soon as possible, the best situation would be starting as a freshman or at least backup a QB who is leaving after 2018. At least that is what he is being told by all the "advisors" hanging out at the Elite 11 workouts -- that and maybe a few other things.

Agreed! He's not going recommit. It's time to look to the next QB recruit and it's not Fields. It's part of the game in recruiting and we seem to get burned every year by a kid decommiting. We 'll be fine. REMEMBER Brandon Wimbush??? We re still doing fine.
