2018 Recruiting Thread

So, CJF is visiting the South East;)

It's been said since this summer that it was extremely unlikely SAB was going to be able to qualify. Him "flipping" isn't the issue. He didn't really look the part at the UA all american game practices either.

I thought I read he had a hip injury and was limited in UA practices. SAB really wants to be here and play with Parson and Barber. He's a talented athlete who can play multiple positions nd loves PSU so I would hate to loose him.

If he has to go to prep school, what difference does it make to him if he signs or not? He still can't go anywhere other than prep, and his signature is not binding.

If this site is to be believed, SAB's problem is not related to admission; its related to his NCAA eligibility. Just because it's easier to obtain admission to WVU doesn't make that go away.
Wondering if there is a parallel to Paris Ford? I believe a student can be admitted to a university, yet not be eligible under the NCAA Clearinghouse guidelines. So, perhaps an "academic redshirt?"
If this would be the case for the young man in question, if he counts against the scholarship total, CJF may be unwilling to take that risk.....and another school may not have the numbers crunch and carry him?

Other than our own vanity, who cares? The idea that a bunch of pale pasty non-athletes sitting in a room somewhere, eating fried foods by the fistful and wearing food-stained Rivals t-shirts that are probably two sizes too small, while arguing whether or not a handful of already-committed and already-designated-5-star-recruits-by-your-competitors means anything in the real world, is laughable.

Perception creates reality. The value of the Penn State brand is increased by the recruiting ranking, both by recruits who view them and want to join other highly ranked recruits, and by writers and analysts who cite them and write/talk about who is coming on. It matters. I wish it didn't matter, but it does.

What you're talking about is what used to be known as a "partial qualifier", or something like that. Maybe Art can chime in on how that works.

You are both correct. An athlete admitted under those circumstances counts against scholarship limits.

Schools can also admit prospects who are not eligible, under NCAA rules, to receive an athletic scholarship. Those prospects would not count.

Without figuring out the math, will making those kids 5-star recruits change our rankings all that much? Or is it just the idea that the 5-star column has more checkmarks in it?

They are both already 5 stars on the composite rankings on 24/7, which is basically what everyone uses. So it isn't going to be a big impact one way or the other. We've seen it play out year after year about Rivals rankings, Penn State verbals, and Mike Farrell. A "checkered past", would be an accurate description. Always interesting to see it play out.

From what I've heard Prep School may not even be an option and he will likely have to go the JUCO route which means he'd be class of 2020 and not 2019. But he has seemed to be very solid to PSU so if he were to "commit" elsewhere it is likely PSU nudged him in that direction.

Except the checkered past would not be accurate. Rivals rankings are very close to other rankings. Some people are not happy unless they are complaining.

Oh Mrs Farrell joined...how nice!

Nope. Just look at the rankings. Your complaints are BS. Rivals has PSU right there with other services.

2018. Rivals 4th, 247 4th.
2017. Rivals 12th. 247 15th
2016. Rivals 21st. 247 20th.
2015. Rivals 15th. 247 14th.
2014. Rivals 24th. 247 24th.

The reality is you are obsessed. There is no noticable difference. It is funny that you spend so much time crying about Rivals when the rankings are very close.

Really, how much time do I spend on it Mrs Farrell, please do tell...I mean you just joined today so clearly you know how much time I worry about Rivals rankings.

The reason they are close, is because at the end of the year Rivals makes these adjustments. Slade and Shorter haven't played a real game in months, and they've been playing HS football for four years. And yet, now, there's a discussion over whether or not they should have 5 stars. The reason isn't to reward Slade or Shorter; it's to get Rivals more in line with the rest of the world, so that you can make the stupid postings of comparisons like the one above. You want to compare? Go and find the ratings of 247 Composite and Rivals from late October of each year, and compare. We all know that they won't be nearly as close as you portray them.

YOu can look up the rankings for next year if you want to prove your point. Give us your list of players who are not ranked properly.

True but who says their pale faces.

I would let it go. No one cares about Rivals rankings anymore and they did that to themselves. 247 is the only ranking that matters, that is it. Rivals is like the media in that everyone now knows that they are selling their agenda and not the full truth and consequently everyone with half a brain takes their version of events with a grain of salt. Congrats to Rivals, you eventually reap what you sow.

Julius Irvin took an official visit to USC on Saturday. That was his 5th OV.

I thought I remembered someone posting that one publicized visit was unofficial...according to 247 it appears to be the most recent visit to USC?

Correct, his last two visits to USC (including this past weekend) were unofficial according to 247.

Saquon Barkley, does that name ring a bell?

I recall Rivals in-season rankings, must have been for the 2017 class. There were 7 PSU commitments in the top 250, and in the next ranking, every one of the 7 PSU commits received a lower ranking. What are the chances of that being random?

I don't think I'll go to a full statistical analysis on this, but feel free to knock yourself out, limey.
