2021 Phillies Thread

Both teams (Braves and Padres) did not score in the 7th inning, so it's still 8-7, Padres.

Can the Padres get 6 more outs without giving up a run?

ugh, with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, Eddie Rosario singles, driving in Will Myers from 2nd. The Braves and Padres are now tied, 8-8.

Edit: that's how the top of the 9th ended. Need the Padres to score in the bottom of the 9th.

Braves score 2 runs in the top of the 10th, both with 2 outs, and take a 10-8 lead. The big blow was Jorge Soler's double, after being down 1-2 in the count (it was 2-2 at the time of the double). Need the Padres to score 2 or more runs in the bottom of the 10th.

Padres don't score any runs in the bottom of the 10th, so the Braves win, 10-8. As such, the Phils are 1 game behind the Braves in the NL East standings. The Phils have played 2 more games than the Braves.

Can't do anything but win. Phillies' shot at ATL is looming. Get your Mets hats out at the end of the week. We'll likely need help as the Phils finish up in Miami, the hurt locker.

1.5 games back with 155 games played and Braves 154. The Phils have two more losses.

The Padres are trying to get Tingler fired it feels like but I am just more pissed at watching a team not named Phillies blow a game for the Phillies multiple times.

That's what I thought it was, but I looked at MLB.com, and they had it as I posted. It appears that they were slow to update things after the Braves - Padres game finished, but they now have it as you posted. If I recall correctly, the game the Braves are "short" will be made up, if necessary, with the Rockies at the end of the season.

Through 7 innings, the Phils have only 3 hits and the Braves have only 4 hits. Wheeler has been very good tonight for the Phils, but it's 0-2, Atlanta. Need the Phils bats to come alive in the 8th and the 9th.

Phils opened the game with consecutive singles. Against Morton, they had to plate something and came away with nothing.

Harper with a nice AB to work a walk to lead off the top of the 9th.
Realmuto pokes a ball to right center, but the Heredia makes a nice running catch. 1 out
Vierling pinch hits for Brad Miller. He drives a ball to left, and Rosario with an error.
Cutch gets an intentional walk, so it's bases loaded, 1 out
Gregorius fouls off the 1st. Then takes a ball. Then a flyout to deep right field (just missed hitting a salami), so Harper scores on a sacrifice, and Vierling goes to 3rd. 2 out
Glavis to the plate with 2 outs, and 2 on. He takes a ball. He takes another ball. Smith tries a pickoff of Cutch on 1st; nothing. He takes a third ball, so it's 3-0. He takes a strike, 3-1. He's out in front of pitch and fouls it off, 3-2. He lines a foul, still 3-2. He lines another foul, still 3-2. Smith blows a fastball past Galvis for the strikeout.

crap.

Atlanta wins the series opener, 2-1.

With tonight’s loss, I now feel that the division lead by the Braves is nearly insurmountable.

It is... the party's over
I agree it's over. My question is the Braves have played one fewer games than the Phils. Do they have a make-up on Monday if needed? I don't see anything on the mlb.com schedule.

Announcers noted last night that if needed, the Rockies would have to fly to Atlanta for the game.

Right now the Phils have the slimmest of all hopes for a playoff berth. They pretty much have to win out and hope for a Braves collapse on the final weekend against the Mets. Yeah, the sucky Mets. If the difference Sunday night is ½ game then the Braves will play the Rockies. If after that the division is tied there will be a one game playoff against the Braves in Philadephia since the Phils would have won the season series.

It's a pipe dream but I've stuck it out this long I figure I may as well buy into it.

Nola might be the most overrated pitcher in baseball. Time for him to go.

Nola has certainly been a disappointment this season. That said, he's the 2nd best pitcher the Phils have. It seems to me that it would make far more sense to work with him over the offseason, and try to get him back to his previous level. Perhaps he'll never get there, and will continue to be an enigma and a disappointment. But whether they trade him now, or in a year (after he continues to disappoint), the Phils would not be in a strong trade position, so it's doubtful that they'd get a pitcher with as much talent as Nola.

The 1st inning was a mess for Nola tonight. That said, he did a nice job of settling down, and pitched well through 6 innings, and leaves only down 1 run, 2-3. Now if the Phils' bats could end their slumber, the Phils could still salvage this game.

bottom of the 7th has been a bullpen disaster for the Phils (and a dumb error by Herrera). Alvarado, then Neris have not gotten it done. After 4 runs were scored, Coonrod was brought in to try to end the bleeding, and after a walk got the 3rd out.

4 hits, 3 walks, and an error when the game means so much to the Phils, is just a disaster. Phils trail after 7 innings, 7-2.

It’s time to softly play Taps to signal the end of another disappointing Phillies season. Yet another historically poor bullpen performance. Convert a mere several of the 35 (or more) blown saves and they could be talking playoffs.

I don't know how you fix this.

There is virtually no one on the team I'd keep past Harper, Wheeler, Ranger, and that's about it. I include JT. If somebody wants him, send him. Hoskins is made of glass. No bench or platoon player is worth keeping. No starter or bullpen guy other than those mentioned are worth keeping.

I wonder who sees things to make deals for some of these guys, if scouts or development guys are desperate or what, but I don't want Didi, Cutch, Moniak, Jank, Joyce, Knapp, Miller, Bohm, Maton, Quinn, Williams, any of them back. I'm sure I'm forgetting some guys but it doesn't matter, they're all terrible. Herrera, gone. Get something for Nola before he goes 2-13 next year. This is the sendoff. I hope I don't hear any of these guys are option retained or signed. They all suck. Nobody in the bullpen has any business on a MLB ballclub.

Don't get me wrong, I despise a lot of these guys during the games but I don't blame them for being abysmal ballplayers, especially the bullpen. They are who they are. I don't put a goat in the KY Derby and expect him to win. Somebody in a carpeted office thought these guys were viable and they were horribly wrong. This is where the blame should be cast. The decades of suck prior to 2006 and the decade past 2011 do not make this a great place to play.

Disappointing in that we didn’t make the playoffs. However by all means this was a successful season if you judge it by talent. No way did it think this team would have a chance to above .500.

The Phillies are currently 81-77 and need one more win to finish the season at better than .500.

May not seem like much, but they haven't finished with a winning record since 2011.

What a way to limp into the final meaningful week of the season and just whiff. Ten years and counting for missing the playoffs.

I would absolutely not bring Joe Girardi back. Hate his style and his disasterous management of this team. Dont tell me that he had a poor farm team. They dont manufacture runs, play terrible defense, and their "ace" Nola is a total head case now.

Here’s the issue: look at Gabe Kapler in SF. He was our favorite whipping boy in Philly, but it was the crummy organization and awful talent.

The Phillies are in a deep hole and what hurts most is that a decade of losing hasn’t gotten them out of it. They’re still a full rebuild away.

Ranger Suarez continues to be the man. At least it's looking like a winning season. That's something I guess.
Based on this season, I think Suarez established himself clearly as the #2 behind Wheeler. Nola has regressed from the #1 to the #3 or 4. The number of two strike hits he gives up is astounding. Given the holes (bullpen, Bohm struggles, Hoskins injuries, no CF, Didi struggles, Cutch, and overall defense), finishing above .500 is a significant accomplishment. Still a disappointment. Cutch comes off the books, so that helps payroll. But, do they make a big splash in free agency? Big names out there for sure. But signing one big name isn't enough given the help they need in LF, CF, 3B, and SS. Not to mention the bullpen again...
