2021 Recruiting Class Thread

Wiltfong and Dohn today, eh? Wiltfong also CB'ed Jeff Davis to us today.

Don't know if there's any chatter driving it, or if they're going through and CB'ing some of the kids who haven't gotten CBs yet.

He would be a good get.

CV committing sooner rather than later could help boost recruiting on the offensive side of the ball.

Lonnie White and Donovan McMillon both upgraded to 4 stars on TOS. It's my understanding that 247/Rivals (as well as the PSU staff) view White as an ATH although some schools are recruiting him to play QB.

Malvern's football coach called him the best athlete to ever pass through Malvern. He will play WR and safety this season.

I don’t think this is good news. I actually like our chances with Edwards.

Sounds like Kiner might stay close to home - Louisville/Cinci seem like good bets, also depends on whether he has a committed-able offer from Michigan.

Agreed on Edwards, feels like we're making up ground. Malik Newton still has the CB from Wilfong though.

Seems Oklahoma found themselves a #theserious3 as they are calling themselves. Definitely need to lock up Veilleux

Ranking the Contenders: Moliki Matavao

3. PENN STATE
Once the travel ban is lifted and Matavao can spend more time at Penn State, then the Nittany Lions could move even higher on his list. The four-star loves how that offense utilizes Pat Freiermuth and he has an exceptional relationship with position coach Tyler Bowen. Matavao also likes James Franklin a lot and he sees Penn State as an up-and-coming program with the chance to make the College Football Playoff in the coming years. Being next in line at a school that produces top-notch tight ends is strongly being considered.

I think it’s more that people thought it was an ND/Michigan battle, and neither of those schools made the cut.
Michigan is about to get a NJ DE who doesn’t have a Rutgers offer, in addition to a DE outside the top 1000 they already have, and yet they cooled on Armitage. Think about that. I’m not saying PSU cooled on him but it’s not a bad miss either

Other schools never have coaching changes???

Obviously every school has coaching changes but I think Coach Chaos leaving really hurt because he did leave later than other coaches would normally do and built really good relationships with these kids where Coach Scott may not have. Also the limited in-person time over the last month didn't help Coach Scott to make up ground. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 1-2 kids from down south that he recruited previously.

Yeah.....it's really the combination of the timing and the quarantine. At least Trautwein already had OL ties in this region. Scott is definitely playing from behind in PA, NJ, MD, etc.

Some analysts have been down on Armitage's skillset, apparently he plays very rigid.

DE recruiting is going to be tough going this cycle until Scott can get out and meet with some of these families face to face. This one, though, may have been a case that a lot of teams backed off that Armitage originally liked.

new CB for athlete Lonnie White from Malvern

From what I'm hearing from people pretty well connected in that SE PA area, this Lonnie White could be a stud. His rating is "just 3*", because he does not focus on football. He's kind of a throw-back style athlete who plays multiple sports. Plays football, basketball and baseball. So for him it's not football 365/24/7. Told that if he focused on football only, he'd easily be a high level 4* prospect.

I watched his video, explosive big athlete, does seem like a kid that could be underrated. What position does he play in college though? Bit of a tweener, looks like he could be a good QB at a lot of programs, probably wont be at penn state. Fast enough for WR? or does he transition to TE?

If he plays college football, it will be at either safety or WR. He is playing both positions for Malvern this Fall. He’s run a 4.5 40, so he has decent speed to go along with his size.

I think we are recruiting him as a WR. He is not going to be a "burner". He does not have "burner" speed. But he's a bigger guy. Legit 6'2"/6'3" and right now about 210lbs. 1 or 2 years with Galt and he'll be a solid 215-220 at about 6'3". Speed is good enough. In that 4.5 range.

My buddy said he's just a naturally gifted athlete. Whether it's baseball, football, basketball.... he's the best player on the field/court.

I have heard this critique also.

I have also heard that the staff has backed off as they see Armitage as an interior DL more than outside and Armitage does not. scUM supposedly did for the same reasons. One can make a reasonable assumption that ND's cooling was of a similar nature.

I think DL recruiting will depend on how the DL plays this season. If lights out with Scott coaching will definitely help recruit the DL in 2021. This year not so much because it will be too late for this cycle.

Ranking the Contenders: Rayshaun Benny

1. PENN STATE

This might be a controversial No. 1 pick for Benny, but there are several indicators here that suggest Penn State is sitting as good as any school on his list. The first is a January visit to State College that definitely spiked Benny’s interest in the Nittany Lions. The second is that Penn State has already locked in one of his three official visit spots. A third indicator is the recent success Penn State has in recruiting the metro Detroit area, including landing his teammate Enzo Jennings in the 2020 class. The final mark in the plus column for Benny is that all else being equal, I think he would prefer to get away rather than stay close to home.

[So far as Rashaun Benny is concerned, the article previously excerpted is introduced with the following interesting suggestion, one which may favor us given our interest in landing a good DT or two: "...ranked as the No. 14 offensive tackle prospect in the class but would actually prefer to play defensive line in college."[/QUOTE] We could be in play for him as an "athlete".
