2024 Olympics Wrestling (merged)

Her strength and ability to hold center is just uncanny. She digs in a hook or a 2 on 1 and controls the match. So technical and strong to go with it. I am sure people will start gaming for Amit but she will also continue to evolve. It's a great time for women's wrestling. As a side note how many girls named Amit will be wrestling in 20 years? Similar to the number of Cael's that are coming up.

Not to be a downer but JB set the record with 7 SENIOR golds. Elor has three.

Not that she won't be the goat some day but still a long way to go.
Well really, if she doesn't get bored and walk away, and assuming she doesn't lose (a big assumption but not crazy either), she'd tie JB next Olympics, when she's only 24.

It'll be interesting to see what happens someday when Elor is tested. I can't recall ever seeing her in trouble other than having to bail out of certain positions. The only times I can recall her being taken down were in garbage time or I think there was one match where she got out of the gate sloppy. In really big matches she gets especially risk averse (like today's final) but you feel like she'd still win every exchange if she bothered to open up. It was only recently where she started to look for ankles off her tie-ups. It's well within her to become more dynamic and creative, like Helen, she's just never had to fix anything because nothing's ever been broken.

Susaki just lost so everyone can be beat but I just don’t see anyone really close right now. Will be interesting to see if she can hold 68kg or if she will have to go up next cycle. Blades might be the only person who has a chance and as much as I love her I think it’s only a small chance at this point. Blades is a supreme athlete and has a big length and size advantage but she isn’t a very tactical wrestler at this point and Elor is. Will be fun to watch if it happens. Personally I hope it doesn’t though because both those ladies should be Olympic champions and having one on the sidelines would suck

I'm curious if anyone has heard her discuss why she dropped to 68kg, because I think she could have just as easily medaled at 72kg and saved herself the cut. I kind of doubt it was to make room for Blades. Maybe she or her coaches thought she had a better chance at 68kg?

It’s 76kg at the Olympics. 72 is where she won her world titles at. I’m sure she could have went up and won the weight this cycle but 76kg is the deepest and toughest weight in the US. (Blades, Adeline, Makoyed, Guilford, etc.) Much easier path at 68kg

D'oh, right. Thanks. I knew that and it somehow fell out of my brain. That said, yeah, there's no reason to think she couldn't win there either. But it probably does make 68kg a surer thing.

Pretty sure it will be about 5 years until she passes him on that front.

Sad, but not surprising that NBC didn't see fit to actually run Amit's match in prime time, summarizing it with highlights instead. It wasn't that compelling a match, but she did make history and deserved more air time. Her interview was also great stuff.

Agree. But the average American who isn’t a wrestling fan probably wouldn’t appreciate a 3-0 match. Her other matches had more scoring and would make better TV.

These Olympic draws are crazy. UWW is trying hard to put it to us. Actually back
Firing on the girls side.

Do we think this trend continues in the Men FS brackets

Greco really doesn’t matter.

I agree with everything you wrote. Amit did a great job of staying disciplined this tournament and avoiding potentially precarious positions. There were several times in some "50/50" positions where she didn't push the position because she didn't need the points. I loved her inside trip/ankle pick against the Turkish wrestler (see 3:58 mark of the attached video) and her counter leg attack against her Polish QF opponent (see 4:27 mark of the attached video). For both videos click on the YouTube link on the video for access. Amit obviously has the athleticism to add leg attacks to her arsenal, and I believe you will see this as her career progresses. And until her opponents can show they have the ability to counter her hand control/tie-ups she also has the luxury of adding to her arsenal while her competitors play catch-up.

Not sure if this is accurate but I just read somewhere that Vinesh, Hildebrandt's finals opponent missed weight this morning.
Read the same thing. Still under appeal from my understanding

Per this, they're going to swap in Vinesh's semi opponent, Guzman from Cuba, so Hildebrandt doesn't automatically get the gold.

I imagine Hildebrandt wouldn't have wanted to take gold without a match, but that's some pretty weird rulemaking.

Guzman lost to Vinesh on a day that Vinesh made weight. How does this replacement make sense?

Are they just making rules up as they go? Never heard of UWW promoting the semifinal loser to the finals like this before.

It doesn't. Vinesh went from being guaranteed a silver to off the podium.

Vinesh is a big name in Indian wrestling for protesting the continued tenure of the president of the Indian wrestling federation over sexual abuse allegations made by other female wrestlers, who all got themselves arrested at Modi's inauguration by protesting.
