AS THE BIRD TURNS (IOWA STUFF)

Anyone have a link to the crazy Brands interview where he said he doesn't believe in peaking, for collegiate athletes?

Candidly, I think 2020 would have looked similar to 2021. Iowa wins but has some under achievements and PSU steals the show with 4 champs (RBY gets Top 4) Tournament scoring favored that kind of team as we would have 92.5 points pre bonus by those projections, which I don't think a non Iowa team can touch.

Spencer would have scored upper 20s though and Iowa would have had 7-8 AAs (Assad, Young, Murin were iffy) and plenty of bonus to win comfortably though.
I believe this is right...

The info on the video said it was published Nov of 21, and the interviewer said it was recorded three years earlier, so 2018 I guess

And then there is his most recent gem. Post #2143 in Ferrari clan.
I wonder if Ferrari was kicking his ass in the room? Not sure why else he would leave??

LOL. He can't think os any other reason Chittum would leave.

I always felt that just a few crazies drove the narrative on HR. After reading the board recently, I think the delusion is much more pervasive than I thought.
Where’s Curtis Lemay when you need him. HR is calling out to be the target of an overwhelming bombing campaign.

Wrestlestat is predicting a 7-3 dual. A 10-0 match is not out of the realm of possibility by any means. Can you imagine IRONBIRD's literary genius manifestos in response? My anticipation is already building.

Wow, when is the last time Iowa didn’t win a bout in a dual? That would be something else. Maybe TNT decide to risk it this year and come out to Happy Valley. Yeah, right.

Would take Ayala over Howard just because he has been active and looked great as a freshman but sounds like he might have similar shoulder issues now. Hope for a speedy recovery for them both.

Iowa will dual in Iowa City this coming season. Without doing the research I doubt they have ever been shutout in Iowa City. Might be worth the trio just to see that. :)

No shade on Murin whatsoever but couldn’t help but notice the three “common opponent” losses by SVN to Murin only to see SVN outplace him at NCAAs. PSU vs Iowa in a nutshell.

My understanding is that it is not 7.39 per year, but 7.39 total, so almost 2 extra per year, which is still quite an advantage.
Exactly. And, as shown in the official NCAA Infractions Report, Iowa was far and away the biggest violator for wrestling. It wasn’t even close. It also bears mentioning the report was conducted when Iowa was on top of the college wrestling world and had their pick of blue chip recruits. Imagine Cael Sanderson being able to offer an extra 1.84 full scholarships to top 5 PFP recruits every year and tell me this wouldn’t add to his already considerable advantage. What’s unfortunate is the NCAA didn’t go back further in time to see when it all started. They only used a small, 4-year window. Everybody knows it started before then. They should have gone back to 1978 when the rule changed.

And Gable homers try to explain how it wasn’t such a big advantage because they kept winning after the advantage stopped. Well, yeah, it helped build the whole ****ing brand you hayseeds.

The report states that the NCAA investigation did ask the schools to go back from the date of the B1G non-compliant rule/formula and provide a supplement of over awards for any sport with excessive grants in aid that participated in an NCAA Championship. That would necessarily have included all Iowa wrestling teams over the full period up to those last 4 years already covered.

I am unaware whether the content of those supplements were ever published. I looked for them, but was unsuccessful in finding them. The NCAA report neither includes them nor explains how they may have been used in evaluating the punishment as suitable.

Additionally, I don't know what retention requirements the NCAA may have then applicable to such records. I would think, if they still existed at the time the supplement was requested (because they had not been disposed of as a matter of routine compliance office procedure), then a good many would've likely existed only in paper form. Unless someone expressly saved a copy for posterity and comes forward, I doubt they'll ever be found.

HR/GIA perspective on Covid. Even Mrs Wino offered an OMG when I read her this gem:

The saddest part is, other than the people that died and the families and friends that lost loved ones and/or businesses, I can’t think of anyone else that got screwed over more due to Covid. Without it, Iowa almost certainly has 2 team titles and Spencer is a 4xer. Hell, Lugo had a great chance at winning it all as well.

This is compliments of the hybrid MSU/Hawk fan.

I think he has his own special breed of insanity. You know how many people actually give a crap about wrestling?

I live in northeastern, PA, and I have a few real world friends that I can talk about wrestling in person. And it's not because I don't know anyone or everyone hates me, it's because most people don't watch it.

So this goofy pandemic from China that shut down the world, hurt, how many businesses, killed millions of people, and really disrupted our way of life inconvenienced, Hawkeyes and Hawkeye fans the most. Because they would've won another one.

Well, it's pretty obvious Cael won two since then so maybe they should just try harder?

What they don't really grasp for them it's basically over. I would not say they're an automatic number two going forward, if I had to guess Michigan, Ohio State, or Cornell might slide into that space.

Why? Because dynasties happen when they happen for a few reasons and I will was a perfect storm with Dan Gable back at that time Sanderson was in is the perfect storm for Penn State currently.

Penn State is basically the SEC in wrestling. I mean the whole SEC. Not Bama or Georgia and once you build a program up like he has, it's really hard to dethrone them.

You're gonna need a game changer, a legendary coach, that possibly moves to a big university in the hottest recruiting area in the nation for wrestling. Which is going to be hard to duplicate because it's going on right now.

People also like to point to branding or history, these recruits now we're not alive when 9/11 happened. They listen to autotuned rap music, not Peter Frampton who happen be a the number one artist right about when Dan Gable started.

For many kids all they know is Penn State dominance. Hell when Dan gable started it was a team called the big red machine going on Jim Croce had just died two years ago. And I was still playing Little League. Tough to strike out, a great bad ball hitter , could use the strike zone too get a walk, iffy glove ( my face and body were an option at third base) , but good arm.

I was 12 lol.

By the way, Jim Croce's son AJ Croce is at Reading later this year. I snagged two front row seats. Not sure if way she wants to go yet or a buddy will go. Jim was my first favorite artist and I thought it was such a shame that he was already dead by the time I heard his music.

Man, I have to work this into a post over there. I'm sure the lads would love my opinion on 70s singer songwriter music and how it relates to Iowa wrestling and why in the modern area it doesn't come across as well.

I'm thinking of adding something about how I don't know much about mushrooms, but I used to know which ones to pick when I was a little kid when my grandfather took me out. Because that was right around the time Dan Gable started that Iowa and Jim Croce just passed away.

See how this all ties together? It's kind of like an epic real life fantasy story. It comes together for multiple angles, and it leads to another national championship for Penn State wrestling.

I'm thinking of a post that would combine, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, punk, rock, music, fire company, block parties in north, and eastern Pennsylvania, the 1970s energy crisis, weight training, yoga, and secret Russian training methods.

GrandPahybridfan wrote sympathy letters to hawk fans after they suffered the horrors of cancelled NCAAs in 43,44,45. Three opportunities for titles just snatched away from them.

When can I expect to have access to the podcast version of your voice-to-text?

I'm thinking I'm missing out on something whether I read it silently to myself or use Google to read it aloud.

Millions died, Hawkeye Report hardest hit.

I mean, in the microcosm of NCAA wrestling, no one got screwed worse than Spencer. I've said this a couple times, but if the 2020 NCAAs weren't canceled, Spencer would be a heavy favorite. If he wins there and then in 2021 wins the "no ACLs" title as his fourth instead of third, he leaves his shoes on the mat then proclaims "excuses are for wusses" and walks out of the sport in one of the most triumphant exits in sport history as a 4-timer with a legitimate claim to being in the GOAT discussion possibly leading his team to their second straight title. Furthermore, he can fix his ACLs right then in March 2021 and have 2 full years to rehab before preparing for the 24 Olympics. It's really stunning how differently his personal story is written because of that cancellation.

Of course, NCAA wrestling isn't even a pimple on the ass of the world in general, so comparing Spencer's plight to the destruction of the entire world that the pandemic caused is pretty dumb.

It's barely noticed among sports fans.

Spencer was going for a 3rd title in 2020. So was VJ. Neither missed opportunity was any more tragic that any wrestler who missed an opportunity to win it once or to AA once or to wrestle in their only NCAA tournament of their career.

Spencer got 4 chances to win one. VJ and MH got 3? Your point extends to any “senior” in 2020, but not any of the younger classes.
