At-large Bids

Supposedly today, but who knows. Though I guess it has to be sometime today since they said (at least I think they said) that preseeds are released tomorrow.

Per the manual, it is tomorrow (Wed., March 10), though the committee has jumped the gun in the past.

"The remaining spots available in each class are reserved for at-large selections. Wrestlers must have wrestled a minimum of four matches at the respective weight class to be considered for at-large selections. The NCAA Wrestling Committee has determined that regardless of the number of spots that will be pre-allocated to qualifying tournaments, there will be a minimum of four at-large spots per weight class selected by the committee. The at-large qualifiers will be selected by the NCAA Wrestling Committee and will be announced March 10, 2021."

Michigan State got a 149 in (Peyton Omania) w/ an at-large who was 4-6.

He was the 9 seed at B1Gs, and went 1-2 just like Beau.

4-6 record. WTF?

Murin (4-3) & Casey Cobb (8-1, Navy) not qualifying in their conference tourneys just killed Beau's chance - plus, the NCAA having a fetish w/ a 4-6 wrestler.

DUMB

I can't wait for their genius seeding either.

Hopefully he is the first alternate. Alirez has been hurt and Cobb is returning from cOvid. Maybe an opening will occur.

Omania was pretty clearly ahead of Bartlett on the list. Wins over Storr and Van Brill w/ his losses all to top 20 guys + Rooks (who beat Verk). His big ten tournament win was over the 3rd place finisher whereas Bartlett's was over a winless guy from MD. The only question was whether Bartlett would sneak in over someone like Crooks from ASU who appears to be the last one in.

Beau had a pretty favorable draw (at least that's what the board thought) at Big Tens and had himself in good position to beat Thomas. He said it himself, it's a game of inches. Like I said on the other thread, I think too many of us got starry eyed and talked ourselves into believing Beau could just "talent" himself as an undersized freshman to NCAAs then make a run at the weight, not how it works.

Kid gave it a go at a weight he was not nearly big enough for off of what feels like less than half a season. This will fuel him and I can't wait. Possible we don't see him again in a PSU singlet for a year and a half but I can't wait either way.

I think the good news is that this really doesn't mean much for his long term production. You all should still get the normal 4 years from him. He passed the eye test for me, but just clearly wasn't a 149. Reminds me a little of Brands the past 2 years where you can see some nice skills, intangibles and occasional flashes of greatness, but the size is always going to a ceiling on actual production.

Maybe redshirt him next year and he takes over 141 from Lee the year after for 4 years? Have a hard time seeing him as a true 149 at any point.

Hey I may be Beau's biggest fan on this board and going forward I know he is going to be incredible for us.

That said I am pretty sure Cael said in an early presser "Beau thinks he can win a national championship at 141 this year". Maybe I was on a binger or something but it is in my memory banks somewhere.

This tells me that Cael honors wrestlers desires for the most part, and let Beau take a real run at winning the spot from Nick.

Unfortunately:

1) We all know that was never going to happen, I can count the number of people who might be able to beat Nick this year on two fingers and Beau is not one of them.
2) In allowing this somewhat trivial yet admirable persuit: (a) Beau lost the shot at padding his resume at 149 (b) reduced his time at weight at 149 and (c) may have resulted in his unfavorable seeding at Big 10s (d) probably ruined his chances at an art large bid due to his small body of work at 149.

I believe Beau is on an upward trajectory this year and might have improved his nationals performance relative to Big 10's and given us a few more team points. Bummer!

If we take a step back. Do we have a realistic chance at beating Iowa? I say yes but it's probably a 10ish % probability at best, meaning we really don't need to sweat this one issue.

Likewise, what kind of coach do you want? One that says if you want something go earn it and I'll support you, or the other that tells his athletes where they are going to go wether they like it or not. Cael is the best, and this one might have backfired a bit, but I wouldn't change a thing. Beau was literally an SV decision from earning a slot to nationals.

Murin and Thomas in the B1G hurt.

Looking through the list it is amazing how many matches some of these got. A couple of them had 20 matches this year.

Maybe the board did or maybe 2 posters posted the same thing over and over and over and over and over......so....

It felt like the board was all in

Omania had 2 wins over NCAA qualifiers (Van Brill and Storr) which is probably why he got a nod over Beau and others.

Should have started barlette at 149 from get to so he could get extra matches at 149

Remember the Real Woods discussion? With his extra two bouts he had the minimum 4 and was awarded an At Large.

Wut?

He placed 2nd, which with the 4 bouts made him an AQ. The 3rd place guy from CalBake is an AQ so.....

That’s ass backwards.

There is an A in NCAA. There’s actually two of them.

Or could have started baretta at 149. And his little bird too. :)

Woods needed to have 4 matches after PAC 12 tourney to have the runner up auto spot.
The extra matches to get him 4 made him eligible for an at large only.

In the final analysis, the odds were shorter than they needed to be, yet it was as close as a takedown in sudden victory against Thomas that could have reversed Bartlett's fortunes.

-- With 13 of the 14 wrestlers at 149 ranked in the top-33 of the Coaches Ranking, this weight class had more wrestlers from the Big Ten ranked than any other weight class.
-- Didn't matter because the 5-year allocation average at 149 was 7, with the exact number 7.4.
-- Still, at Big Ten's, a first round win vs Blockus (a qualifier), or a consi win against Thomas (a qualifier) in SV would likely have earned him a trip.

I feel badly for the young man, though this is not the end, but the beginning of a stellar career. Bartlett oozes talent.

between Beau and RBY, Nick should be a hell of a scrambler! Showed up this weekend as well!
