B1G Tournament Session 2 Thread

A very interesting development despite the Buckeyes great tournament is Nato's sluggishness. Something to keep an eye on. Wish Clark was healthier, but NATO is not killing guys like I thought.

That 133 lb final is going to be a big one. If Clark wins, PSU may well have closed much of the gap coming out of 141 lb final making the 174 lb final huge.

If Suriano and Stoll were healthy this would be a very tight 3 way race to the end. Makes me wonder what could have been with Marinelli, Burak, Stoll and even Seth Gross. Coulda shoulda wouda..

Finally.

Nice to see you're not a hater too.

There were some real head scratchers today. For as good as some of the guys where (Zain, Nolf, Hall) there were some real yowzers.

Jimmy got pinned twice today. One was to a guy he just beat and controlled a couple of weeks ago. There was a short period this year where Jimmy looked like everything clicked and he was an animal. Then it just sort of...ended.

And then there's Bo. There was so much wrong with that match that I don't even want to get into it.

Welp, there haven't been many tournament sessions like that one under Sanderson and I have a full day-one recap at the link if anyone is interested in going back through it. In the past, although it's a limited sample to choose from, his teams usually respond favorably well after a head-scratching session before it. The deficit of the team lead looks pretty daunting, and very well might be out of reach, but I'm looking for a wholly reinvigorated effort tomorrow nonetheless. And, hey, for a bright side, now Nickal can score two pins in the wrestlebacks, even if they're not worth as much

If you take a deep breath, what has really happened tonight ?

Jimmy had a bad tourney.

Bo had a bad match. Puzzling approach.

Suriano is hurt.
Cortez is hurt.
After that, Joseph lost to a truly elite monster.
McCutcheon lost to the 1 seed after getting the first TD.
Nevills lost to an undefeated wrestler, the clear national #2 kid.

Wow. Tough crowd. Look how spoiled we are.

Yeah, it wasn't the session we were hoping for, but let's keep some perspective. In the seven PSU semi-final matches, one PSU guy (Nickal) was upset. The other three guys who lost (Joseph, Cutch, Nevills) were all going against higher-seeded guys.

I actually liked how Joseph wrestled. Went toe-to-toe with the best and just come up short. Cutch would have to wrestle a perfect match to ever beat Pfarr, and it didn't happen tonight. Nevills is close, but it's not like he laid an egg. He was a little cautious maybe, but Medbury has a lot to do with that.

So give tOSU some credit. They got huge wins at 149 (Jordan) and 184 (Martin), and avoided any upsets. Given that PSU got almost nothing at 125 thru 141, there was little margin for error at the other seven weights, and Ohio State wrestled great. It is what it is.

Despite your attacks, yes, you are correct.

Other than Jimmy I would agree with you. Jimmy laid a huge egg in this tourney and imo it was the biggest game-changer in terms of points - including Bo (we already knew there was a good chance Nick wouldn't go at 125). If Bo comes back for 3rd and rings up bonus, he probably costs us maybe 5 points in terms of differential to daO$U.....Jimmy has cost us way more than that @ 141.

It wasn't all that terribly head-scratching. Gullibon getting stuck in 29 seconds or whatever was puzzling. Nickal losing was an upset, but not a shocking upset IMO. Other than that, the higher-seeded PSU wrestlers won and the lower-seeded guys lost. So not all that head-scratching.

I question whether you are actually a PSU fan.

"Jimmy has cost us"? How about Jimmy came to PSU, represented us on the mat, displayed humility and character, and leaves dear old State prepared for the world and a kid who is prepared to engage in the next a stage of life. Every kid has a different glide path for finding their way in this world and I'm guessing Jimmy will do just fine in that regard.

Again, other than Jimmy getting stuck twice as a 2-seed.....I'd agree with you. If Jimmy wrestles to chalk we're right there. Jimmy getting stuck in his first match was pretty shocking. Then getting stuck again in his 3rd match (2nd in ConsI Bracket) was beyond shocking. If he doesn't win tomorrow, he'll have gone 1-3 in tourney and should consider himself beyond fortunate to be going to the dance given his overall record this year.

Voice of reason tonight. It's hard to be so with this board like the football board after a loss

Agree that Gulibon laid an egg. But, honestly, is anyone that surprised that he lost to Gasca? Losing to Diehl did surprise me - but not that much. Jimmy's career record in the B1G tourney is now 8-8 (7-6 in the NCAA tourney). Expecting him to make deep runs in these tourneys is probably unrealistic.

Agreed. The NCAAs come down to what Suriano gives us and if they can crown 3 national champs. That will help make up for potentially not getting anything at 133,141,&197. Assume Nolf and Retherford win it. It sure looks like either Nickel or Hall better take home a gold. Gotta figure the freshman from Apple Valley might have to come up big. We'll have a better idea tomorrow about the kid and our chances at Nationals.

Micic has a shot if he see NaTo again.

I give us a 50/50 chance to pull this out tomorrow.

Joseph / Bo / Nevills can all get on a roll tomorrow.

Ohio St only has 1 clear favorite in title matches tomorrow with 4 coin-flips & 1 heavy underdog.

I wish a few select posters would not make the same repetitive crybaby negative post 20 times in the same thread. You think we're gonna lose & wah wah wah wah wah. We get it.

It just clutters the board.

I'll take those odds - how much?

If you take an open minded look for a tournament run, you knew this was going to be tough with no points from 125 and 133. When you have 2 weight classes like that, everyone else has to be almost perfect. It didn't happen. I knew Jimmy was in trouble when his first match was going to be against the kid from MSU. Jimmy does not match up well against him. Jimmy needed to make a run and it didn't happen. Bo lost in the semis which we weren't expecting. All of the other weight classes went as planned. Tip your hat to OSU. They wrestled pretty much a perfect day one tournament. Getting Myles and Micah in the finals was not expected.

its sunday morning....

Sun came up....check
Coffee is warm....check
birds are out.....check

we may lose or we may win. If we lose so be it...it sucks. BUT if we WIN, how epic would that be?

so before today unfolds....have an extra slice of bacon, pray a little longer and put a little hop in your step when you go for the paper.

We ARE!

Can I be the first to officially question the decision to pull Halls shirt?
Because we might lose this tournament? A nothing team tournament? Say that to yourself. You are questioning a decision made in January because of one data point in March at a meaningless tournament team wise. Does that sound like sound judgment to you?

It was a joke, but don't be shocked later either

Thank you for posting this! I woke up pretty down in the dumps this morning, but you put things in proper perspective!
Regardless of how this tournament ends, if we get Suriano back healthy for nationals we can win the NCAA Tournament!
WE ARE!

Off to Mass and then back to BIG 10 wrestling.

Down 18.5 right now, pretty realistic chance to be almost even going into the final matches -- OSU has Rodriguez and Burcher in 7/8 matches (1 pt) and Pletcher in 6/3 (3 pt), PSU has Gulibon in 7/8 (1 pt) and Joseph, Nickel, McCutcheon & Nevills in 6/3 (3 pts.) If favorites win, OSU gets 4 points + no bonus likely, PSU gets 13 points plus likely 4+ bonus.

If that occurs, down 5-6 going into last 7 matches -- OSU with 6 finalists (4 pos matches) + 1 consolation (1 pt), PSU 3 & 4. Need Zain & Hall to win the 2 head to heads -- Nolf to win and the consolation guys to take 3rd.
6/3 is 4 points. 10 vs 6 points.

Ok dam I have to come over here and tell you guys to settle down again..Your men do their job tomorrow and my Hawks will give you some help at 133 and 184 can't have the darn tan boys winning..Good luck..

Thanks. I root for the Hawks all day every day over the OSUs. Hope Clark especially has a good day.

If Suriano gets back healthy, we wrap up NCAAs by Friday night. That said, I don't think he will be given his appearance yesterday. That said again, we can win without him as well, but it will be a dogfight of course with both OSUs. The score will likely tighten today and we will look back on our diminished bonus opportunities due to our extra byes.

Or I'm totally wrong and we get swamped today. But that hasn't been a hallmark of Sanderson teams - they roar back after a bad round.

As someone else said, the only two guys that had a bad day were Jimmy and Bo, and Bo lost to his kryptonite. So it really wasn't a bad PSU day. Having Suriano hobble to center mat was the worst and most surprising part of the day.
