Not sure where the OP heard this. I did see a reference to a wrestle-off, though can't remember the publication, and discounted it as unknowing. Not the "model" the coaches have adopted. A "kick-off event" is more likely, imo, though I know nothing about that at this point.

If I remember correctly there were rumors that the wrestlers didn't like the public wrestle-offs when they were held a couple of years ago. I also don't like the idea of public wrestle-offs (full disclosure - I attended the last one). Perhaps wrap any possible wrestle-offs into a local tournament a la the NLO?!?

The starting spot isn't and shouldn't be won or lost on a single match.

A public "wrestle off" would seem to be a winner takes the starting spot proposition. But since there is much more that goes into earning the spot than a single public victory, I don't see the point in having a public wrestle off.
