Since about the beginning of the JF era. One program coming off a recent NC game appearence, and one still in sanctions. Amazing.

I'm not sure we want Penn State put in the same category as ND, but I get your point.

ND has been recruiting rather well. No reason for them to be losing to the service academies, Wake Forest, Duke, etc. I have heard that their D is young, but still...it's a damn sieve. Our D is young and has been riddled with injuries and yet appears to be light years better.

ND...no one does less with more.

It appears acting like a maniac on the sideline does nothing to help the team play better. All it does is show the players you're in panic mode.

They have a HC who is in love with his system, which is pass first, then, pass again. Defense is not the priority. They play soft. If they get into a bowl with a major opponent, the other team beats the snot out of them. If it were a fight, the bout would be stopped.

I don't think ND will be a factor until they return to physical football - run the ball, stop the run, pressure the QB. That approach sustained ND football for 100 years. It works and it's no mystery why they have fallen into mediocrity over the last 20 years. IMHO, of course.

Well, it was defense that led to Kelly's most successful season at ND. Even last year they may have made the playoff if they had held on to win vs the Trees. An amazing plummet this season. I think ND will be better than Sparty next year.

I thought the Lions played soft early on, but that has changed. They are much tougher now. It has held them in good staid lately. One thing about the old guy. His teams were never soft. Watch old bowl games on YouTube. They hit and hit and took the will from some really good teams.

Maybe, but they didn't hold against Stanford - they let the Tree go right down the field for the win.

Kelly has had 2 good seasons and 5 with 5 losses. His winning % right now is .667. No major bowl wins. That doesn't cut it at ND.

Their record this year is quite a shock. There is no reason for it. They've got great athletes and its not like they've been horrible under Kelly (just not great). Their worst years under Kelly was 8 win seasons (three times in 7 years. Hard to believe he's been there 7 years.

And of course Kelly's most successful season came his third year at the program. So guess who recruited the majority of those starting players? The answer is NOT Kelly.
