Who is going to call the plays without Moorhead--Rahne? Or is there a chance Moorhead will stick around for the bowl?

No. He needs to go and build his staff (and don't take any of ours) and keep his recruits (and don't take any of ours).
With the early signing period now happening its not possible to do both.
Rahne has been JoMo's eye in the sky for the last 2 years he should be able to handle it.
My question would be do you use this Bowl game as Rahne's "interview" for the job?

I think Rahne called the plays in the Taxslayer Bowl after Donovan got sacked. If so, that would probably be the case again.

Yea and I doubt MS can match the money PSU assts. make.

Wasn't it a mississippi state coach that allegedly gave cam newton's dad $180k? It was only $180k, but I believe it is a rule that sec schools, save Vanderbilt, have at least one bag man.

Wondering if Rahne will call the game from the sideline or the booth?

In all seriousness, I wonder if Moorhead is the kind of guy who will be able to adjust to the bag man culture in the SEC? To go from Fordham to PSU and then to the SEC is major major culture shock.

Mississippi is going to be a culture shock for a Pittsburgh guy who has coached in New York and Pennsylvania. On the flip side, with what he will be paid, he will be able to buy Starkville (aptly named).

I'm more concerned about that than recruits or transfers.
I wonder if he'll go after his old coach and now the HC at Fordham as his QB/OC?
Maybe JoeMo will be his own OC at Miss State.

It is kind of funny to remember quotes that these guys make. Turns out that his wife's family's closeness got quickly less important, and turns out that it was OK after all to uproot the family once again, etc etc etc.

Not ripping him. Just a reminder to all of us that nothing anybody says should be taken too seriously in this regard.

Can Jay Paterno sit on the BOT and call plays in the bowl? He has OC experience.

IDK. I thought it was Auburn that was the money train for Cam's dad but maybe it was MSU.
After reading the article that MSU was willing to increase Dan Mullen's salary to 6 Million a year they must
have a lot more money than I originally thought.

Best of luck to JoMo, but I’m confident in CJF and that he will have a plan for this. I’ll be interested in seeing if he tries to poach recruits. I’m hoping that is not an issue however.

Maybe we will have the Tommy Stevens spring transfer question answered after all.

Exactly. Do do as I say. Do as I do.

When Franklin hired Moorhead, he (Franklin) said that he always maintained a list of possible assistant coaches for these situations. Franklin comes off as very smart, hard-working, and prepared.

Any coordinator is two subpar seasons away from getting the axe. Some might get more, some less. It's fairly obvious that Moorhead left a HC gig to be our OC to raise his profile and get a better HC gig. It's professional development and security for his family.

Perhaps if media types quit asking questions about coaches family's, people wouldn't be hanging on the PC answers that are given.

If Franklin isn't confident enough in Rahne to name him oOC without seeing how he calls a game, he ain't the guy. Besides, waiting a month to find a replacement is not a good idea.

If I am CJF, I take a week or two to look at my options. Rahne can coach them up for the bowl as kind of a trail run. This is too important of a decision to make. I don't think it is as simple as Rahne is or is not the guy. I think the appropriate action is to consider all possibilities and make the best decision.

If Franklin doesn't have a very good idea now of who his top candidates are, he's fvcked. Waiting a month to test Rahne......fvcked. Musical chairs in the coaching ranks is happening now. By early January a lot of guys are going to find seats.

I'll repeat this: if Franklin isn't prepared to decide on Rahne now, Rahne ain't the guy.

I wonder if Moorhead will take any of the assistants with him?
Moorhead has never coached south of the Mason/Dixon line so he will need to hire some assistants that have connections down there. Maybe some Penn State coaches have that trait, but there are a ton more coaches outside of Penn State that have it too and Moorhead has only coached with the other Penn State coaches for two years so it's not like they have traveled with him from stop to stop.

Franklin has stated multiple times about how he keeps a list of coaches who would be candidates for positions on his staff. So he knows who his top candidates are.

I just looked it up, and Pry was named DC within 24 hours of Shoop being announced as Tennessee's DC. I don't think Moorhead leaving is a huge surprise, certainly less of a surprise than Shoop leaving. So if Pry is the guy, he will be named OC very quickly, just as Pry was. If he's not named OC within the next day or so, then Franklin is probably working on other candidates.

question for anyone...If an OC is hired in a week or so would that person be able to work with the team in bowl prep or just be a silent observer and evaluator of his players for the next year. I remember JoMo being hired before the bowl game as well but I don't remember what his role was. I know that he was not the OC for that game and I know that the new OC would not be allowed to be the OC for the bowl.

that would be up to CJF and how he would like to handle it.

I agree for the most part, but you have to keep recruiting in mind too. The longer it takes to get an OC hired the more negative recruiting goes on and the more chance we lose a recruit. Even though losing recruits doesn't seem likely, why take the chance if the guy you want is there?

After all the attention that JoMo got after last season, Franklin knew that this was probablly his last year as OC. I gotta believe that after the Rose Bowl that CJF and JoMo had a very long discussion about who should be his successor if he left after this season. If that guy was on the staff, let's say its Rahne, then CJF had to tell them both that Rahne MUST soak in everything JoMo could teach him in the next 12 months. That way the move is seamless and smooth. If it isn't Rahne, then hopefully it is another guy on the staff like Limegrover who has been sitting in the offensive meetings for the last 2 years. I am very skeptical of going outside the current staff for this hire. Its gotta be Rahne or Limegrover.

I think the only thing he was not prepared for was a an (almost) 4 hour rain delay in East Lansing.

In James We trust. I am confident that JM leaving did not surprise anyone up in State College and they already started preparing for him to leave. Whether it was this year or next, they were ready for it IMO.

Amen.
And given PSU isn't likely to change this offensive system, there aren't too many other great options. CJF likely already knows whether he's got the confidence in Rahne to name him OC. Not a knock if he needs a few more years, might just be a delay. But either way, I don't see them changing the system or waiting a month.

Agreed. They seemed to be preparing for this with JoMo's role in changing the offense, identifying the QBs, and teaching the system to the others while also playing more of a support role in most recruiting. Seemed Limegrover, Gattis and Huff were more at the front of the (non-QB) recruiting relationships. Seems he and CJF were on the same page. And all knew this was likely.

PS: I wish the guy the best of luck. He brought a great boost to our O and definitely earned his money (and our appreciation).

As a rule, a new outside hire would be too disruptive. Expect they're going to play in their system with the guys who know the system.
