Breaking: Retherford wins his second consecutive Hodge Trophy

Congrats to Bo also on 2nd place finish. We were one injury away from having the top 3 finishers.

Also, Zain lost in a close Hodge race in 2016 or we'd be talking about the 2nd 3-timer :)

The numbers say in 2016 Zain was significantly more dominant against notably tougher competition:

Zain vs. AAs: 10-0, 4.6 pts/match
Ringer vs. AAs: 4-0, 3.5 pts/match

Ringer was a great college wrestler, who won a lifetime achievement award in 2016.

Although you can make an argument for Ed, I think Zain's win streak and 2 Hodge trophies cement him as the greatest PSU wrestler of all time, which is an incredible accomplishment considering the unbelievable talent PSU has had over the years, not just recently.

I feel privileged to have gotten to follow Zain throughout his career and to have witnessed the greatest wrestler in PSU history.
Stepping back, I'm going with Zain, David and Ed as 1A, 1B, and 1C, in no particular order, at the top regarding Penn State wrestling. While I love me some Zain, there are so many factors, imo, that separating them is hard. I could post their Career Pin, Career Bonus Point, Win %, and other stats, who each lost to, even the intangibles and what each brought to the team...and each would be deserving. As fans, we have been so fortunate.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but if Joseph becomes a 4xer that might be his first year winning the Hodge. I gotta think Bo is a front runner for it next year if he wins another championship

Bo is probably co-favorite with teammate Jason.

True! Can't believe I forgot about Jason.

If Joseph becomes a 4xer and 1-time Hodge winner that speaks volume about the level of dominance in our room when we've had 2 and 3x champs as multi-time Hodge winners.

Assuming the next two years play out in a very favorable Penn State manner we could end up having:
A 3X champ who lost 1 match in his last 3 years and could not win a Hodge. Ed Ruth

2 4X finalists, each a 3X champion with one loss in their final 3 season's that could not win a Hodge. Mark Hall and either Jason or Bo.

As well as two 2X Hodge winners, DT and Zain and two 1X winners in Cenzo and either Jason or Bo.

It is a fun time to be a PSU wrestling fan.

Quentin Wright is a 2x champ, 3x finalist, 4x AA, 3X team champ.

10 years ago, those credentials would put him as the all time best PSU wrestler, or certainly very nearly so. Now, not even in the conversation.

And that's not a slight against Q. It's a statement of how good this program is.

Correction, how good this team is. Ohio State has a great program.

Congratulations to Zain, couldn't have gone to a more deserving wrestler. I still remember when the little American came back beat the Russian for gold at Cadet worlds. Just hammered the poor Ruskie into submission. GOAT.

That's my sentiment exactly! All 3 were super wrestlers for PSU, among a growing list of super wrestlers! Roar, you may have to extend you alphabet some in the coming years!

I'm so confused by this result. Did ESPN and TaTo neglect to send the "Snyder = College Wrestling GOAT" memo to the Hodge voters? Given that it's the wrestling equivalent of the Heisman, it's perplexing that the GOAT only made the list of finalists 2 of his 4 years in college and barely came in 3rd both times. How much you wanna bet it was them Russian hackers, or maybe Kim Jong Un. Those guys are always trying to screw with us.

Fortunately, it appears that opinion isn't all that popular outside of Columbus and the ESPN studios :)

In what should be a celebration of greatness and recognizing the GOAT at PSU there are the obligatory shots at other people. Looks like a board most on here mock. Snyder? Not the GOAT of college, he's been busy being the best in the world.

Pretty much looks like people are taking shots at ESPN, not at Snyder, personally.

But, I'm glad you recognize that your board is that way.

Agreed. In a recent interview a reporter tried to get Zain to discuss whether he could be considered the PSU GOAT. His response suggested he’d never even considered that thought and he quickly turned to praising Ruth, Taylor, and other mentors at PSU. You can’t really teach that level of humility and social grace. o_O

I disagree. Humility and social grace are learned attributes. We are all a weird mixture of natural instincts, genetic dispositions, and learned behaviors. Some of us need to “learn” a lot more than others, but I can attest from personal experience that learning to be thankful, humble, and showing grace are mindsets and skills anyone can develop. It really helps when you are surrounded by others who believe and act similarly like the coaches and his teammates.

True..... but I was ok with that. Everywhere Ringer went for his last two years he was the last guy still signing autographs, snapping photos and being one of the great guys of the sport. There’s only one award to give and if the football Heisman votedtheright way, they would be no Manziels or Mayfields winning.

And now the Hodge went twice to the Man in Black. And Blue.

Good observation re: the Heisman. It’s become like a Grammy award. Flashes in the pan seem to win and the artists that have long lasting success are bypassed.

You’re starting to sound a little shell-shocked, friend. Sensing attacks where none exist. I know you only started your research project here recently, but if you stay a while you’ll discover that we love Snyder here and only cheer against him for 7 minutes a couple times a year when wrestling a PSU guy, or in tourneys where his point scoring matters to PSU.

Interesting that the Win Mag Hodge Trophy page has continued to have an error.

Thought they might correct it when they added Zain, but they continued to list Cael Sanderson as being from Iowa in 2000.

Hopefully they will correct the error soon.

Please keep reading 'beat it tool' is a great response below. As far as Snyder goes there have been several shots at him and his coaches statements. I am watching this board perform similar to HR. A couple of people taking shots and being jackwagons. The difference is I am not running back there to report those responses like a 12 year old.

Congrats! You have earned the coveted TIA.
You have acheived this great accomplishment in impressive fashion and also in record
time! Your strategy of becoming the pot-stirring pebble-in-the-shoe you so expertly railed against here is truly admirable.

You can now change your signature line to include “TIA winner”.

Again, congratulations!

Snyder is one of my favorite wrestlers off all time. He's earned just about every superlative you can throw at him. He's also earned just a bit of shade thrown his way vis a vis his big talk of beating Penn State, and the deficiency at delivery of relevant results. Sometimes even Captain America can bite off more than he can chew.

That said, 99% of any mockery going on here directed towards Columbus is aimed at the guy who makes it just too easy. Kyle is a great leader and teammate so he was just getting with "the program."

Meanwhile, easily the most consistently dominant folkstyle wrestler over the last 3 YEARS is being celebrated on his team's board for his innumerable accomplishments, and the humility, gratitude and grace he exhibited throughout. Who has time to squabble with anything else? We will always remember Zain.

Really!!! I am so psyched. I would like to thank the academy, my agent and my family, most importantly I need to thank those of you who lack objectivity, feel that PSU never does any wrong in spite of evidence to the contrary and most of all to you, the op who bestowed this honor upon me. I should ride off into the sunset... but alas there are questions to ask, hypocrisy to reveal and some day to talk about the emperors and their new clothes. Thank you for your hospitality, I was told by several that this board is nothing like HR and this award is proof. Get over yourself.

It's human nature to see what you're looking for. And it's easy to unwittingly become both the oracle and prime mover of one's own self-fulfilling prophecy.

The responses to some of my posts would be some evidence. The hypocrisy that is on display quite a bit on this board is some evidence. And not unusual but at a far more prevalent level is the inability to even consider that those things are occurring. The PSU fan base has an almost overwhelming belief that they are beyond reproach while chastising others for many of the same things. It's humorous at times and even some of your own(very, very few) recognize it and own it. It is a pattern in Pleasant... sorry Happy Valley.
