Head scratcher for me. If he can beat Beard, I guess that is a good thing.
I am so excited for this. In terms of the whole Beard vs Conel, it's all a part of the plan so I won't worry about that.
Conel got 3rd after quitting wrestling off of his strength and heart. He will now enter the room and practice against Cael, Bo, DT, Cassar, Rasheed day in and out ....

And if his shoulder holds up against that crew, I will be amazed.
Makes more sense now that Beard did a gray shirt. Would love a Gross commit and a RBY or Lee redshirt.
I'm excited for his opportunity, and for whatever he can contribute to the cause. Hope it happens, not gonna second guess the plan, that's for sure.
Conventional wisdom is no RBY redshirt next year since we are going to ASU for a dual.
Part of the price you pay to be in the PSU room, the practices will be harder than your matches but yes, I pray for his health (first and foremost beyond wrestling)
Reminds me of a few times Nick Lee showed up with a shiner on one eye. I just assumed he drilled with Zain a lot that week haha
Dont follow the logic... The plan to GS Beard was made long before Conel was injured at the beginning of the season.
I thought the reason Beard (and Brooks FTM) was to possible have them ready for next season and preserve their RS). Seems to have worked out good for Lee.
Unfortunately, Gross> RBY and if we do bring him in RBY will have no choice.
Going on record, Im against bringing these guys in, i just think it looks bad, and some of the kids Cael made promises to may feel slighted. Do we REALLY need them?
I suspect the only promises Cael made to anyone was that he'd give them an opportunity to compete.
I've never been one of those fans that thinks Cael can walk on water but he and the coaching staff are paid to make these calls and they do seem to know what they're doing.
This is going to be a really fun week.
Has there been any indication at all from either PSU, Gross, or anyone else that there is any interest from either party?
Other than the FLO guy just saying that PSU has a grad program that SDSU doesn't (which is also true of literally every school in the country)?

Hope for Conel’s sake he gets to fulfill his dream of finishing his wrestling career with a championship team. If it happens, I will be surprised if he sees the starting PSU lineup except in situations like Manville and Stossel did this year.
P.S. Starting to feel something coming on (NCAA Fever) that will likely fully manifest later this week and make me miss work Thursday and Friday. I may need one of my board mates here to write me a doctor’s note.

I don't see a big issue with Beard redshirting next year. Can't hurt.
I think it's always about the flexibility. It's just Cael being one step ahead everyone else. Maybe Beard goes but the option is their because of the gray shirt.
Just to be clear, Lee did not Grayshirt.
Im guessing Cael doesnt go too front doors at midnight just to tell a kid he could have an opportunity to wrestle for PSU. Any kid that is good enough for Cael to even call would be more than good enough to walk on.
I thought he did? I know he graduated HS early and moved to State College and didn't enroll but trained Freestyle with the NLWC. Doesn't that count as a greyshirt since he technically graduated even if it was early?
Beard has a better chance of being a 4 timer if he redshirts next year. Conel would be a perfect guy to give him that year. Moore may still be too much for Beard next year, but the following year Moore is gone and nobody else will be too much imo.

To state the obvious, I think we will go with whomever wins the wrestle-offs and the trust of Cael & Co to put points on the board in March. I personally doubt that’s gonna be Conel, though I’d be content if it were. The decision will undoubtedly be informed by how much we need points at that weight. Kinda like how 125 played out this year.
Excited about the idea of having a great person and wrestler in Kyle to add to the room. Anyone else think the prospects of Kyle doing Greco post college is intriguing?
I guess the only downside would be that if Beard is objectively better than Conel, Conel starting would hurt the team's chances at a national title. But since that's certainly a factor the staff would weigh before making the decision on who to start (probably the biggest factor, alongside Beard's future more generally) it seems needless to opine now about who should start in 2020, except to say that if Conel gives us the same chance at the weight as Beard would, Conel should start b/c we get an extra year of Beard. Which seems obvious unless I'm missing something.
You realize we're talking about wrestling right? You aren't granted a spot, you earn the spot.
Stop trying to make this out as some nefarious deed. Cael is a pretty straight shooter.

IF and I mean IF his shoulder is fully recovered he has skill. He has beaten Moore (twice),Weigal,Rasheed,Raptor,Holschag,Rotert,Brucki, and Wellington along the way in his career.

Do you think NN knew he was good enough to walk on and become the starter? Wrestling for PSU is all about being the best and a guy like Beard will keep improving and be better in 5 years than he is in 4 years. I think if the shirt would have stayed on Mark Hall Mark would be just fine today.
