Corley fired

I believe Shorter kept his redshirt. Also, was JJ hurt? Shorter was in the game at the end instead of JJ. After not playing most of the year that was a huge statement. Where was #12 and #81 yesterday? And did Luketa play? I do not recall seeing him.

Limegrover seems involved with recruiting and appears to have a good personality. The fact that they are recruiting good linemen is important and partly attributed to him but we would all like to see more improvement as a group.

I never saw Corley involved in recruiting, at press conferences, etc. And Franklin's comment at a pre Bowl interview about the questionable fit made it clear Corley was gone. Galiano has to go as well. I would love a WR coach who could also serve as an Assistant game manager/OC. Someone with Moxie.
I think Shorter started which is also a statement.

I think 12 and 81 will get passed on depth chart. A lot of young WR talent

what is a little surprising is, why not just tell him now, let him go to the coaches convention next week(?), find a job, let him resign and then move on. If he didnt find a job by then, cut the cord and announce it. I am pretty sure there is a dead period relative to recruiting that week.
OTOH when you make the big bucks it goes with the territory. Besides CJF could have told him to stop doing something, and kept on doing it.

Glad he made the move but it does seem that Franklin handled it very coldly.

I hope Rahne is also moving on. It just didn't look to me like Rahne was adding much value in terms of play calling or preparation.

Last two years with Moorhead, at critical times in big games Moorhead would call (or sometimes invent) a play that really took advantage of what a defense was doing. Rahne was not able to do that this year.

I just don't get the sense that Rahne is on top of things enough to be able to attack a defense on the fly.

In clutch situations PSU is running the same plays that they ran all game -- just not surprising defenses at all.

I also really think coordinators should be on the field with their players in college football. These guys are basically kids, they need their coach there for leadership and confidence. Moorehead on the sidelines made a difference. Pry on the sideline is leading his players. Rahne is not.

Resume for new WR coach:

1. Spend time visiting and getting to know Julian Fleming
2. Everything else.

Like CJF said when he was hired, it's easier to win games with better players. Which is why I have never understood why CJF and the WR coaches have trotted out Thompkins each game, after he dropped passes game after game.... Recruit, Recruit, Recruit, and then play the players that can AND DO make plays.

I'm not getting my hopes up on Rahne being let go. That being said, JF allowing his cronies to have their first stint as coordinator at PSU is unacceptable. At Vandy, Eastern Mich, Etc, sure. But not at PSU. I don't think people appreciate the level of under-performance on the field this year. O doubt, the WR production this year was horrendous. Close second was OL, but Lime will get a pass.

Lots of "dropped" balls were inaccurate passes that were touched but not caught. Trace played hurt half the season.

LOL. You must have forgotten about Jay Paterno.

That was some offensive system we had. Straight from the 1950s. Verbally telling the wide receiver the play, the wide receiver runs in and tells the play to the QB, then the QB telling the team in the huddle. A well oiled machine! I remember they had to burn all 3 timeouts in the first quarter the one game against Alabama.

Cornell (FCS – NY): The Cornell football program is seeking applicants for a full-time 11-month assistant football coach position. Preference will be given to candidates with offensive line experience, but all positions will be considered. We are looking for the best candidate available. Some interviews will be conducted at the AFCA Convention in San Antonio, TX. If interested, please send your resume, cover letter, and dates that you will be in San Antonio to Alex Peffley, Assistant to the Head Coach at alp249@cornell.edu. No phone calls please.

Calling PSU offensive lineman crap.
Nooooooo, I'm calling their performance mediocre. I generalize the entire o-line situation as crap because I'm tired of seeing us have a line that plays below its potential, or at least below its vaunted star-level potential. To me, that's crap. But I'm just a fan who lives in a shell.

I feel bad for the guy, especially because he really wasn’t a WR coach ( and it showed ). The same thing happened with Kenny Carter, another good guy, under Joe.
I think the entire offense needs to be retooled. We can’t and shouldn’t be relying so much upon extraordinary QB heroics to win games when we have this level of talent.

Why not announce them all at once?

Why is that so important? It is obvious, isn't it? Because it would get released to the public via the grapevine//rumor mill and then CJF would have to confirm it after the fact. And he needs to get on with the business of hiring a replacement is probably the most important "why".

He may have others in mind for a release as well (most likely) but clearly has not made those decisions yet and is doing some necessary "footwork" in regard to replacements before any further announcements?!....why am I writing this?

Kenny might have been a good guy, IDK, but I think JVP got rid of him for reasons other than football.

I’d bring in Bobby Petrino as OC, then sit back and watch the offense light up the scoreboard like a pinball machine.

I'm less concerned about Rahne the OC than I am Rahne the QB coach. That's where the biggest decline came this year and when Hack was here.

Receivers can't catch a football consistently. That could be viewed by some as a failure on the coaching staff.

Basically everyone questioned the Corley hire and now look. Easily the worst hire of Franklin's career, yeah even worse than John Donovan.

He was hired to coach RBs, then got Seider and moved Corley to coach WRs, destined to fail. Corley couldn't even recruit.

It seems Galiano saving grace may be recruiting. He seems to be on a lot of trips with Franklin recruiting. And Galiano was the one who told JF not to take an ill advised timeout earlier this year, rushing on the field to say no. There's a GIF of it somewhere. That must count for something too.

Geez look at Ficken. He was awful early on. And Gould was pretty bad his entire career at PSU and he turned it around, too.

Exactly and Tyler Davis was great then awful. Who knows with kickers, especially college kickers, especially with freshman.

Franklin isn't firing anyone else. He would have announced them a the same time as the Corley announcement.

I’ll give back that TO get rid of him. I’m hoping CJF is not keeping him because of that one time he saved them a TO.

That's not how it went down after 2015. Fired Donovan ASAP, Shoop later announced he was going to TN, then Chef Herb Hand found a new job, and 'left'.

As others have alluded to, some may be given a chance to find other opportunities before being shown the door.

Galiano is to Franklin what Butler was to O'Brien ...... Friend of the Boss. Galiano should be fired, but he won't be.

This is a good idea. Cornell has been making significant investments in its football facilities:)

Michael Johnson Sr.

Why he's connected: History with Franklin

Oregon wide receivers coach Michael Johnson as the Ducks open fall football practice on Monday, July 31, 2017 in Eugene, Oregon. Sean Meagher/Staff LC-

Don't think for a second that the following James Franklin quote from the early signing day news conference in December did not go unnoticed, especially with the benefit of hindsight:

"You know, with Michael, I've known Michael's dad for, I don't know, 20 years. He was the quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons with Michael Vick, and I was offered the receivers job," Franklin said.

"So we go way back. And then obviously having an opportunity to develop a relationship with his son and seeing what he was able to do, you know, that was really good."

Michael Johnson Jr. is a four-star QB who signed with the Lions in the Class of 2019, and he arrives on campus Jan. 7 as an early enrollee. Franklin has known his dad for a long time, and he's clearly OK with having father/son coach/player tandems, as Bob Shoop's son Tyler stayed on the roster after he left and the program offered running back coach Ja'Juan Seider's son a preferred walk-on spot with the program, which he accepted.

Michael Johnson Sr. has NFL coaching experience but also knows how to work in the college environment, and frankly, he'd be a tremendous addition regardless of whether his son was coming to campus or not. He's 51, which would make him one of the oldest Lions' coaches, but other than that, he fits the bill in just about every area.

We have to keep recruiting nationally, that is a guy with some cache. Wouldn't mind another Seider-type super recruiter on the staff.
The hire was strange to begin with when you consider he was at Army. Granted, he might not have been too happy about becoming the WR coach, but for a guy who was at top of the rolodex, Franklin never had much to say about him.

Does anyone think it is possible that Smith could move to WR? He has done a job with the CBs, but played WR.

OK how about Larry Fedora as OC? He also played WR and has coached WRs.

He has a lot of ties to the South and runs a spread. Seems like a good guy. What’s his tie to Franklin though? Feel like CJF likes to bring guys in with who he is familiar.
