Football Defense powers Penn State to 38-10 win over SMU in CFP First Round

Did the first 20 minutes of the game cause us to lose? No. And very seldom does any team play four quarters at their best…that’s not how sports work.
Really? Seems like the play of the SMU quarterback for the first 20 minutes caused them to lose. That’s how this game worked.

This has been an incredibly entertaining season. Hopefully they can pull out a few more wins to make it even more special. When they showed those aerial shots of the stadium in the pre-game show with snow-covered Mt. Nittany as a backdrop, man it just gave you chills. The history, the weight of the moment was palpable. There's a lot of crazy stuff with college football right now, but I am super happy they finally instituted a legitimate playoff system - it was way past time.

I'm thrilled with this win, and the Lions season....looking forward to Boise State and continuing this season! Great win guys and thanks!

The one thing I could do without, and I think Coach Franklin should address and stop, is the excessive celebrations and posing for the camera after plays these players should be making. I'm all for players showing exuberance on key plays, but we have a lot of guys that like to showboat on almost every positive play. I think it reflects poorly on the program, and it's poor sportsmanship against your opponent. These displays went on well after we had this game in hand...no need for it.

Hey, I like drew, but guys were open. It’s not all about the receivers.
I agree.....I like Drew's improved leadership and his movement in the pocket and willingness to run this season and he demonstrated that today, and he had some nice passes in this game, but he missed some very wide open receivers today. Also overlooked some easy check down relief receivers as well. Maybe the weather on some of these. It was a tough day to pass.

Did you ever try to throw a ball in conditions like today. I hated wearing gloves to throw the ball. But it's hard to grab the ball and make an accurate toss. I know he missed some wide open guys, Kaytron, but maybe use the new gloves for grip.

Totally agree. This is more than about projecting humility and sportsmanship. It's about staying focused so that you are ready for the next play. That focus also helps with keeping your head to avoid stupid penalties. In general, your execution is going to be better. You might even miss fewer tackles. You'll be less likely to be out of position.

But, I don't see this as a point of emphasis in this locker room. They have what they think works and that is that. I'll believe it when we are in the final game. Can't get there without beating the best.

As usual, you exaggerate. The things I see are not different from game to game. They have been symptomatic of every game, and Franklin teams in particular:
  1. Celebrations after making a routine play.
  2. Stupid personal foul penalties.
  3. Missing tackles.
We don't need to go into the dubious decisions from the sidelines. That has been all over the map. But the above are consistent deficiencies that have not shown progress.

These things don't lead to championships. If your goal is to get to a nice bowl game then maybe you are doing enough. But that's not growth. It's not improvement. It doesn't lead to your being the best.
Those three things are problems for all teams. My son in law is a UK fan and watched the SEC religiously….I asked him if UK celebrates every play and he said they do and so do all the SEC teams. I’ve also seen missed tackles by all teams I’ve watched. With all the targeting rules and attempts to strip the ball, players don’t tackle like they used to. And it’s one thing to be critical about certain plays, it’s the nonstop negativity every game that gets old.

He was like a shooting guard who’s shot was a little off, but found other ways to contribute to the team winning.

So you are saying that because these things are problems for all teams then we should not consider them to be a problem.

I would argue that Franklin teams have been a little worse than average on these. For older alums that is tough to stomach.

The tackling one is hard to overcome because of the reasons I gave. Unfortunately the celebrating is just part of the times and not just in football either, it’s all over sports. Teams have lost games because of celebration penalties at the end of games.

Hey Scrivener, laugh all you want but here you go.

The excessive celebrating is mildly annoying, but when it starts to cost us yards and possibly points it's a problem. We stopped the first play of the game for no gain and while we were celebrating in the backfield SMU was lining up for the next play. It took us another couple plays for our defense to catch up to the SMU hurry up and by that time they were already in scoring position. I loved the aggressive gameplan for the defense today but it's not a big ask to eliminate those kinds of mental errors.

The Kaytron celebration in the 2nd half was also stupid. SMU was already getting chippy by that time and the game was essentially over but with a lot of time on the clock and the starters still in. It's not uncommon for something like that to result in a chop block or a late hit as retaliation and that would have been the last thing we needed.

I think we are marginally worse on celebrations. It's like we are getting the kids that have low self esteem after having been raised without fathers. Make a tackle and you get to have a "look at me" moment in front of the whole country. Never mind what anyone thinks about it -- whether it is good sportsmanship or even good for your own performance. The other team doesn't matter. Nor the fans. Nor the school. Just our mercenary team. Cohesion is everything.

Just saw a clip of Franklin addressing the team in the locker room. Words were bleeped out, so it seemed rather apparent that he was being openly vulgar -- an effort to communicate the way his kids communicate. I have trouble believing that this is going to be good for these kids down the road after they actually mature. What will they be thinking then?

I think back at times when I was like that after being exposed to the vulgarity of my father, who himself had no father. To this day that behavior bothers me. It is a burden that I carry for life.

PSU should show up for the Fiesta Bowl in battle fatigues. That would be fitting of our new culture.

Some positivity every once in a while also helps in a fan.

I said this in a different thread. If PSU could just get out of their own way during a game, most would be happy. There is an obligatory stupid play call. An obligatory penalty that turns back a first down. An obligatory personal foul..... So on and so forth. This stuff needs to be cleaned up if they are going to get a few more wins in this tournament.

That's the frustration. Same old same old. I personally feel they can pull this off if they just play a few clean games.

I think you just see it more with PSU because you pay closer attention. I see it with all the teams. And as far as Franklin, I heard the clip too and he was saying he wanted the big wins for the players, not for him and he doesn’t give a f&&k what ESPN says about him…which I think is actually a good message to say to the players.

It was 38-10, there were some positives as well. I wonder if OSU fans are posting right now that Tennessee stinks and doesn’t belong in the playoffs and that’s why they’re winning….because that’s what many of our “fans” would be posting.

Of course. Pay me that kind of money and I will want it for the players too.

I don't lower my standards when I'm around people with lower standards, but I do know for certain that this is what ails our entire system of education. Grade everything on a curve. If you're anywhere near the mean you pass.

I’m positive Penn State capitalized off SMUs mistakes. I’m also positive if we played that bad vs a top 5 team we would never catch up even if the game was 2 hrs long.

We played pretty poorly against Oregon and caught up. We played really poorly against Wisconsin in the Big championship game and won. We played poorly early in a lot of games this year and won. We could play well the entire game against a top 5 team and still lose. Every game is different….playing poorly in the first minute of one game doesn’t automatically carry over to the next game.

I wish people would understand that just because they do not like a playcall or decision it doesn't make it a bad one and just because a playcall doesn't work it doesn't make it a bad one

My problem with some play calls is that they often seem not to account for an opponent's strength or weakness. Running that "tush-push" play is rather predictable. It's going to work when you are stronger than the defense and it's going to fail when you are weaker than the defense. I have no confidence that we're going to push around the OSUs of the world, and I had little confidence that the 4th down call against SMU was going to work. We were not pushing them back with our offensive line.

Otherwise, I did not feel that 4th down call deep in our own field was all that irrational. Circumstances were such that SMU was going to score, make a mistake, or get sacked no matter where they were on the field. And that is what happened.

I will be very disturbed if Franklin tries to pull something like that in the Orange Bowl. You do that when you know you can push your opponent around.
